  • Are you considering starting with bush-crafting? This video will help you getting the right knife and tools for a reasonable price. It's more about the characteristics of knife and tools and not so mush about the brands. The idea is to enjoy yourself in the outdoors. Everybody in his or her one way.
    Greetings Wim

    Nice summary.
For beginners, agree on the mora and Opinel. Every knife person have them as they are very bang for buck. For tropical Singapore axe is not efficient but good for other environments. I highly recommend Silky brand for saw. The gomboy? I think that’s the name is a great starter saw. Nothing cuts wood like a silky haha.

Very good points. Im very lucky i was a boyscout until i was to old to do it anymore. Funny thing i made life rank because i never cared about rank i just enjoyed being in the woods.
Anyway being in scouts we got to learn what was really needed and what was just weight.
Then the military really helped me streamline things. I was very fortunate to meet some amazing guys in survival schools.
I learned about how a survival knife isn't a big heavy rambo knife. Survival is like you said a situation forced on you.
If i have all my grear then its a camping trip maybe under deress. Survival is when all you have is a bit of gear. Usually its a pocket knife in some cases a small belt knife. That is why skills are more important then equipment.
When i was a kid everything was wilderness survival now they have divided things to bushcraft and backpacking. To the point many hikers and backpackers have no real survival skills. I did research on missing hikers that were found dead (not by murder or animals) most might have survived with basic skills. The sad part a few were thought to be very proficient. Many dependent on modern gear cell phones instead of maps and compass. No fire skill because they used a stove. No idea how to build a shelter even though they had a space blanket and matches. That one was a mother and daughter died of exposure.

It seems like a good idea to include basic skills in high school. Just so people can prevent situations like the mother and daughter. Like basic first aid should be included aswel.
      Thanks for the comment.

When you realize that the ideal “beginner” knives and tools are exactly what the true experts find their way back to…

Yep, they work for a reason, and most of us end up doing basic stuff anyway. I still use a lot of these myself ;) But I'm no expert yet.....
