'The Man Who Hanged Himself' (1906) First Time Watching - Early French Black Comedy
Переглядів 4422 роки тому
My first time ever watching this early vehicle for comedian Max Linder - "the first international movie star." It's short, shocking, very dark but also very funny. The story was inspired by a comedy song, which is featured as the soundtrack to the film. Just a correction, I state here that this was Linder's first film but I learned this is not correct - I think this might have been his second l...

Not my first time watching this classic of horror cinema, but my first time in a while. An insane hypnotist, a helpless sleepwalker, a series of horrific murders - this film delivers on the horror front, but is it also a haunting allegory on the psychological horrors of war? Episode 6 of "The Twilight Zone" is a modern twist on the Faust story - with a protagonist who is mean-spirited hypochondriac. This is an episode I found difficult to connect with. Something else? *Please note: given the age of this s...

'The Golem' (1920) Reaction & Commentary - The German Silent Horror Classic

Not my first time watching 'The Golem' but I realised it was one of the great icons of early horror cinema I had not yet covered on this channel. There is just so much to admire, appreciate, be stunned and amazed by in this hugely influential movie from Paul Wegener. This is another of those films that you can enjoy just on the level of a monster movie, but there are certainly deeper levels to ...

In answer to your question at the end, it was indeed the pilot for a series that wasn't picked up. BTW, if you like those more naturalistic vampire movies of the 1970's, I'd recommend you check out the BBC's 1977 production of "Count Dracula". ua-cam.com/video/u36VjXirmlY/v-deo.html
This has been one my favorite films since the first time I saw it. I saw it a few times back in the old days when it was really projected onto a screen in a real theatre, and it was one of the first DVDs I bought when dvd players became available. Maybe because I saw in on a large screen it was clear that the vampire was a woman (the same who shouts "Quiet!" In her first appearance). I don't think there is any substance to her being androgynous, she is simply old. In fact, I remember reading an analysis of the film which saw the vampirism as representative of the old preying on the young. Also, the ruffled collar is standard wear of Danish ecclesiastics and is still worn today on social occasions. I believe the original intent was to prevent dust from powdered wigs from falling onto one's clothes -- so it was worn by the upper classes, both men and women. (Dreyer was Danish)
Thanks very much for this. I've long admired Nigel Kneale, as someone with a very original mind. There was once a book of his short stories, long out of print and very expensive second-hand. I can't understand why no-one has reissued it.
Watch ,"The Undying Monster",1943.
I imagine how scary this one must have looked in 1963. Same with Wiitchfinder General.
Wow, you look a lot like Rhea Seehorn. Great review, I'm here because of Iron Maiden.
I was 22 when this came out. I love the movie and I fell for Richard Lynch then. He was so good as a vampire - so seductive. I wouldn't be able to resist him!
What occurs to absolutely no one is that the castle isn’t the Goodies’ to sell. They’re the house sitters, not the owners, and have no authority to sell the castle, so any purchase contract with the council is invalid.
I understand why you wouldn't want to watch any zombie films after this, but I think you would enjoy the horror comedy *Shaun of the Dead* (from the same people who made Hot Fuzz, and the TV series Spaced). Just watch a trailer for it if you want to understand its tone.
Hmm, it would be interesting to point some of your criticisms of City of the Dead (no urgency or stakes, plot points not explained) at one of your favourites, Daughters of Darkness! I think City of the Dead is admittedly not great, but it has a great "vibe" in terms of its look, its use of classic tropes, some of the music, and of course the older cast members. BTW, if you haven't seen it I highly recommend the Cushing/Lee film Horror Express, a period piece set on the Trans-Siberian Express.
I think Carefree is probably my favourite Fred and Ginger film too (along with the others you mentioned). I do think it's a shame that Fred insisted that he didn't want to play a dancer, as it would have made the story feel less contrived if it was his friend who was the psychiatrist, not him. (Even better if the friend was played by Edward Everett Horton!)
I think Interview With The Vampire is the best vampire film I've seen. Among other virtues, it looks epic and has great music. OTOH, Let The Right One didn't impress me; I thought the kid actors were wooden and the plot felt obvious (also, the scene with the cats was inadvertently hilarious). One film that is certainly not great, but which is worth watching if you love gothic atmosphere, is Vampire Journals, a spin-off from the low-budget Subspecies vampire film series.
It was a brilliant episode and made a great impression on me They should have been given awards for this programme ,the only thing that comes close to the ingenuity on a totally different subject is the Monty python sketch "bicycle repair man" The Goodies were the very best of comedy and satire
This was made before cell animation, where the moving parts were drawn on a clear cell and placed over the non-moving background. This is why there is minimal background. Every frame had to be completely redrawn, not just the moving parts. This was painstaking work and took a lot of time.
Excellent commentary. The movie showed a lot of realism. Very original. The humor and friction worked well. Total thumbs up
come on
It's like a Lovecraftian giallo.
I really wonder how comes that a non-Italian person ended up watching Danger Diabilik and even enjoying it. Diabolik is a super famous Italian comic that changed morality in the Italy of the 60s. Even if for today’s standards the comic would result innocent and prudish, for the 60s it was a scandal. It was labeled for adults and the outrage that it caused was not as much for the kisses he used to share with his woman Eva Kant, but more for the fact that he was a criminal and he was the hero of the story. In Italy the cinematographic version had a discrete success because of the many fans of the comic would have never missed the opportunity for a new format of their hero, but I thought that out of Italy it would have passed unobserved. But i am glad you liked it. I liked it too , I saw it probably 15 times
Ew... no I would not watch this with those added sound effects and dubbing
I enjoy this movie a lot except for the ridiculous "insane asylum" backstory and the mob killing. But, the public wanted black and white stories back in the day. The hero lives and villain dies a brutal death
*Was a good episode ... if only to see Graeme's legs in those very short Scout pants*
Coming out on Blu ray for the first time next month. I remember being spooked out watching this on Christmas Day aged 7.
I not only remember Swiss Family Rpbinson, I remember The High Chapperal. What was the killer's deal that he killed his victims so sadistically?
If I had seen Messiah of Evil before I saw Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, I might have actually tried Howard the Duck. I wish Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz had been able to finish the movie, because I had to pick it up from the commentary track that Tom had transformed into the Dark Stranger. Atmospheric as this was, though, Tom's companions' walking off into a murder set piece seeemed very telegraphed. The man whose throat is cut in the first scene was played by Walter Hill, who directed 48 Hours.
"This is acting you can smell" OMG, that's perfect. I'm SO going to use that from now on LOL
Yes, please do a special video on the great Richard Matheson.
It is extremely difficult to get hold of a copy, but "The River", by Jean Renoir, 1951, looks at some of the same ideas albeit in a much gentler way. It is also very beautifully photographed and once seen, never forgotten. If you are not familiar with it then I highly recommend it and can confidently predict that you will enjoy it.
Easily the best vampire film ever made. You, Tengy, are an exceptionally fine reaction host.
Dawn of the Dead (2004) is VERY GOOD.
you need to see the new restored version, it looks great
I remember having nighmares of the dancing spirits when I was little. I could never figure out why. Every few yrs I would dream about the dance. I finally ended up watching Carnival of Souls around 15 yrs of age while flipping the channels. How scary it felt when I saw that exact dancing dead scene playing out right in front of me in the real world. It felt like my nightmare was becoming a reality on the television screen. I will always remember this movie for giving me one of the worse scares in my life
I watched Fantasmagorie
This 1925 version of Phantom with Lon Chaney is absolutely fantastic. However, the score that goes along with the version one watches has a dramatic impact on the overall experience. The BEST score is the one done by Gaylord Carter. It has such a sense of fear and foreboding that perfectly matches the tone of the film. If the one you watch doesn't have that score, it can drag down the enjoyment level quite a bit.
Haha. I must confess. I stopped and watched this video mostly because I thought you look just like Enya, and she has been a musical crush of mine for almost 40 years. Sigh. Well don't worry, McDreamy, you're no disappointed yourself. Haha. Such depth of film history in Enya's doppelganger. Who knew? And who knew they tried to film The Wizard of Oz in 1910? 😊
I watched On the Beach last night. Waltzing Matilda is a great and beautiful song, but right now I don't care if I don't hear it again for a few years.
SURPRISE! A couple of major names in the credits! One of our great composers Ernest Gold wrote the music. Photographed by the great Floyd Crosby (HIGH NOON and many other, including man of the Edgar Allen Poe films directed by Corman)....and a couple of others....But, zero budget! There's not even furniture in the film that you'd expect in any normal film. This was made when, uh, skulls were considered scary in and of themselves. I can imagine what audiences of that time )or which I would've been one) would have thought seeing the images from our modern day gore films!! Lots of throw up, I imagine. ("we need an usher for a clean up in aisle 2...and make it snappy!")
Thank you! This movie is indeed a hard watch and yet is well done. The entire cast was wonderful. The last scene of Moira watching the submarine sumerge knowing she’ll die all alone will break your heart.
This movie was originally in 3-D. In your face!...so to speak. Yes, the very high temperature on the moon in direct sunlight WAS well known at the time. The ONLYY thing this movie got correct. Sorta. I DO hope we find giant horned spiders on the Moon someday!
I like those 16MM film reels on the control panel: Maybe that's what they are watching on that tiny viewscreen?---16mm space movies. Nice chairs with wheels on them. Nice and stable for take offs and landings...or meteorite collisions. Those walls are actually fiberglass. Hardware and Home Depot-type stores still sell those panels. Thanks for the coverage of this....classic? Class-sick? :-7 AND PLEASE COME BACK ON-LINE!
Jon Pertwee should have asked Katy Manning's help for his welsh accent. She's good at it.
Hello Tengy, just wanted to drop you a line to see how things are going with you and your family. I hope life is treating you well 🙏. I catch myself watching a new movie and say to myself "I wouldn't be watching this if it weren't for Tengy. I hope you don't mind my dropping in on you every now and then. We all miss you and always wish you the best and remember there will always be a light on here for you.🙋🙏🙏😊🌹❤️
I just watched Phantom for the first time and loved it. Great to find and hear your take on this one. Like you said…. Striking! Scathing! and Daringly Different! 👍 I definitely think this film will also feature in one of my own future uploads.
(stop stalking Troll boy)the trolls claim that the 1971version belongs to my stupid brother in law Trevor burrows it was given to him in Tim Brooke Taylor's will you can't make it up since Tim Brooke Taylor's death he has been trolled
Really cute. I love the reactions. The last silent movie made features Robert Redford in All is Lost. I’d love to see silent film come back. Keaton makes Tom Cruise look like a fake amateur in terms of punishing stunts. The woman in the silent film era did some miraculous stunts on their own were admirable talents. Real locations, real cliff hanging drama over real spectacular rapids and waterfalls...nothing we would see done today in film. There were no complexes and hang-ups about liabilities and lawsuits back then.
The Goodies often parodied The Black and White Minstrels. In one episode they even parodied the show itself, climaxing with them revolting against the show after being forced to appear on it. Yes, the references to the show aren't very PC or comfortable today, but if you can let it slide because of the time the show was made, it's still funny.
This is one of my favourite episodes, especially "Ye Secret Weapon" and "Witch Burning". The torture chamber set looks like the one from the first episode, "The Tower of London".
I'm a fan of all the big name actors in this movie, and while I think it is a really good and thought provoking film, it sits high on my list of saddest and depressing movies. Very good review, I just subbed.
My favorite Science Fiction film of ALL TIME. I first saw this movie in the theatre when I was 8 years old
Well, that was one way to write new sets into the series. The quick change cabinet disappears after this. It wasn’t incorporated into the new office.
Drake reaction I love this movie I watch it every fall around Halloween season
