That's brilliant! You know I've actually seen the Alice in Wonderland he is in but I wasn't aware of his fame at the time I watched it. It's lovely that Blair lives on in these films.

Glad you enjoyed it, Rob! There seem to be so many of these very fun shorts from the early days of cinema. Isn't it brilliant we can find so many here on youtube and watch them any time we like? :)

Another fun one that didn't go as I had expected. Also, I'm not a car person and would love not having to have one, but something like that one would be fun to have.

It is a pretty impressive looking contraption. And no seatbelt, windscreen or roof by the looks of it!

Hello Tengy, you just know that a movie is going to be good when you see a dog wearing a driver's cap and sunglasses! 😆😆😆
I think some of your questions would have been answered if you viewed the first movie "Rescued By Rover" (1905 - the first fiction film to use a dog). I have not seen either of these until now.
This is a sequel, and that is why we both had questions as to what was going on in this film.
Rover is indeed a collie and is considered the first canine star of cinema, coming well before both Lassie (1943 debut) and Rin Tin Rin (1922 debut).
I'm not a "car person" per se and I know extremely little about them; however, the auto used in the film is one of the early U.K. 'horseless carriage' models. I tried to research it a bit but couldn't figure out the manufacturer since there were several in the early 1900s to 1910s. 🚗
I too felt creeped out seeing a stranger drive up to a home (in broad daylight, no less) and whisking off a child. Brrrrrr! 🥶
I also yelled out in my mind, "Why is this guy getting out of the car and leaving the baby alone?" It turns out that he's an alcoholic and needed a quick drink so he stops off at a pub. It makes me believe that he knows that area of town or perhaps he lives within the area. 🍺
As the dog rescues the baby and drives back to the house, the gears in my mind are trying to figure out how they got the dog to actually 'drive' the vehicle. I concluded it had to be camera trickery to a degree.
You can't use a remote control because it hasn't been invented yet nor can you let a car run freefall on its own on an open road (even though there are no other cars around) without risking the baby's life.
So, the scenes had to be done in short film shots and spliced together to make it appear as one long drive image. That's the only thing that makes sense.
The end result is a great seven minute adventure of canine waggery! 🐶
I hope that you do react to "Rescued By Rover" in the future.
Thank you again for yet another entertaining classic film short. 📽❤️

Yeah I have questions about this kidnapping. Presumably it's for money, but if the kidnapper is driving this car - that would have been super expensive at the stage I would guess - does he need the money? Or has he stolen the car too?
I think someone else commented that you can see the hand of the person hidden in the footwell at some point, steering the car as Rover "drives," but it's very well done.
I am keen to see "Rescued by Rover" but I believe it may have some racial stereotype stuff in it around Roma/Traveler/Gypsy people stealing babies? I'll look into it.
You can totally see why Blair became such a star. Gorgeous dog!

Another delight from the birth of filmmaking. A canine hero and an interesting special effect. For the times I think there may have been as much interest in the car as there was in the story.

Good point, Jeff! Those roads look very empty don't they? And the fact that they are unsealed suggests horse use rather than car use. A bit of context I hadn't really thought about until you mentioned it!

How does the adage go... "Never work with children or animals". Rover got a little stroppy at the beginning. Maybe he felt the role was a little beneath him.🐶

Maybe he was just eager to get with the chase scenes and car driving stunts - where he knew he would shine :D

If only dogs could get driver's licenses....In this age, I think heroic dog drivers would be very important. :)
