Karloffs monster is really good makeup and creepy. He was an old vampire, which he never played so Bava made him as his Vampiro Italiano.

This movie is very special to me because I saw it once in 1971 or 1973 so I was about 7 years old. I watched it on a black and white tv so at the time, I thought it was from the 1950s. The memories of certain scenes stayed in my head, but I didn’t know the title and I didn’t remember Boris Karloff being in it so I had no way to look for it. I happened to be watching something on UA-cam last year where they mentioned an old trilogy movie called Black Sabbath and I thought that could be the movie I haven’t seen for over 50 years and sure enough it was the one. I was so happy to see it again after all these years. Brought back so many memories

9:38 (Tengy) "Could Boris be any cuter? He's just adorable." I recall reading a reminiscence that Karloff was the sort of fellow who, if a dog had walked onto set during break, it would have went straight to Karloff and wagged its tail.

The first two episodes would've worked well for a "Tales of the Crypt" script, but It's the third episode that for me, would've made an outstanding feature film on it's own. Mario Bava's cinematography was top-notch. Karloff's Wurdelak gave the vampire genre a new concept, a vampire that kills only those he loves. I read that Karloff borrowed the look of his vampire from reading Stoker's Dracula. Dracula according to Bram Stoker, had a bushy eyebrows and a thick sweeping mustache and windblown wild hair, but he was never shown this way in any Dracula movie. Another great Mava Bava Gothic horror film is "Black Sunday" with Barbara Steele. BTW, I love your Goth look, Tengy.

thanks for those great comments Bob. I had meant to say in my commentary that the idea of the vampire who only preys on those they love is also one explored in The Vampire Lovers - Carmilla clearly loves her victims, but it still compelled to destroy them. I think you're right about the third story being ripe for being expanded into a feature of its own. My question though, is after they have all preyed on each other, who is there left for them to feed on next? If they only prey on those they love.... :)

Hi Tengy! I love this movie has to be one of my favorite Boris Karloff movies along with The Ghoul (1933) and one of my favorite Mario Bava movies along with Lisa and the Devil (1973). I first saw this movie on a local New England show called Penny Dreadful's Shilling Shockers. The first segment is terrifying, the second is definitely tense (I own the English version on Blu ray from Kino Lorber), the third wild. Apparently that was the first and only time Boris Karloff ever played a vampire. Great Episode!👻

It was a co-production with American International (who only distributed Black Sunday) and the English version was targeted to a wider audience - it also has a different score - while the Italian version of The Telephone does have more adult elements (mostly through implication) and a less supernatural but more logical twist.

I really wonder how comes that a non-Italian person ended up watching Danger Diabilik and even enjoying it. Diabolik is a super famous Italian comic that changed morality in the Italy of the 60s. Even if for today’s standards the comic would result innocent and prudish, for the 60s it was a scandal. It was labeled for adults and the outrage that it caused was not as much for the kisses he used to share with his woman Eva Kant, but more for the fact that he was a criminal and he was the hero of the story. In Italy the cinematographic version had a discrete success because of the many fans of the comic would have never missed the opportunity for a new format of their hero, but I thought that out of Italy it would have passed unobserved. But i am glad you liked it. I liked it too , I saw it probably 15 times

It's great to see you review one of my faves! I've been watching this since I was 9 or 10 years old and I've always loved it.
    A few fun points:
The witch scared the HELL out of me when I was little, and it wasn't until I was nearly grown that I realised it was a mannequin, not even an actor but just a prop. It's very frightening anyway.
Mario Bava does have a bit of a dodgy reputation as a filmmaker but I don't think it's entirely deserved. You might also enjoy Blood and Black Lace (1964), Baron Blood (1972), and Lisa And The Devil (1974). He also directed the very silly superhero film Danger: Diabolik (1968) which was richly lampooned on Mystery Science Theatre 3000.
One thing Bava was known for was colourful lighting, often called 'Christmas tree lighting' in the horror film world. This was something Dario Argento carried on in his films, especially Profondo Rosso (1976), Suspiria (1977), and Inferno (1980). I think a whole generation of younger Italian filmmakers owe something to Bava.
Mario's son, Lamberto Bava, is also a film director and made the much-lauded horror film Demons (1986) amongst many others.
    Great review as always! :-)

@@TengyTalksTVMovies you're welcome as always! :-) I'm fairly certain it's a mannequin or a dummy. When it moves, they're pushing it from behind. Oh, and the film was released in Italian originally with Boris' and the other American or British actors' parts dubbed in. Boris' intros were not created until the film was being prepared for US release, and I really think they add so much. Great overview Tengy of the Bava classic. The atmosphere, camera work, sets and colour, were all top notch. I wonder if it would have been so effective shot in black and white? For me the film has a similar feel/vibe to the Roger Corman "Poe" films. Obviously a very influential director/cinematographer who's idea's popped up in many later films, (some of Bay Of Blood's scenes/ideas replicated in Friday The 13th for example). The second story for me had a slight Hitchcock vibe to it for some reason. His body of work was huge, that it would be hard to pick just one other film to watch.

    • @TengyTalksTVMovies
      @TengyTalksTVMovies  2 роки тому +1

Interesting question. Based on this, the colour is so much a part of what makes it distinctive, I think it would lose something in B&W. You're right about the Corman Poe films - he did use a lot of saturated colour in those too, and had a similarly lush look. I might do a video on Blood and Black Lace sometime - at least I know that one is in the public domain, so no probs with YT's copyright checks.

The truth is that I am very glad that Tengy has made a video about this film since it is among my favorites within the Gothic horror genre.
Curiously, the version that I have on DVD in Spanish and Italian, the episodes are in a different order, it is difficult to say which of the episodes is better since all three are of great quality very well set, presented by the great Boris Karloff and with a great performance in the great episode The Wurdulak, also starring actor Mark Damon, who also stars alongside Vincent Price in one of Roger Corman's best movies House of Usher 1960.
The other two episodes are great too The Telephone and The Drop of Water, this the latter is perhaps the most terrifying of all.
The film released in Spain is titled The Three Faces of Fear.
Mario Bava shows that he is a great director for the horror genre his films are very disturbing with a great setting I remember other interesting films by this director such as Black Sunday 1960 with a great dual role of Barbara Steele or The Whip and the Body 1963, very terrifying film with the great Christopher Lee.

@@TengyTalksTVMovies It is. The funny story is that the band was called Earth and they played hard blues in the late 60's. They got booked to play at a white collar party and realized the hosts wanted the clean cut, folk band Earth, not them. That's why they changed their name. The story goes Geezer looked across the street and saw Black Sabbath playing at the theater and chose that as a name.

Proving that sometimes Boris was before his time, he hosted a TV show called "Thriller" [take that Michael Jackson] where he was the host. My favorite is "The Devil's Ticket". All eps are on youtube waiting for your reviews en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thriller_(American_TV_series)
