Dash Rip Rock at The Cotton Club ~ Nov 4, 1988 (audio only)
Переглядів 21День тому
Here's another tape of my old pals and label mates Dash Rip Rock, with a guest appearance from Page Waldrop on Ain't I'm a Dog! There are more amazing covers at the end! Recorded on the eve of their Tracy Chapman produced album release with Bono on tambourine and Devo's fourth comeback. Brought to you by Clark Music and Miller Genuine Draft Beer.
Uncle Green ~ live at The Cotton Club ~ 1988 (audio only)
Переглядів 9514 днів тому
Uncle Green was one of Atlanta's most popular bands in the mid-late 1980s. They were good friends with Mr. Crowe's Garden and the two bands played on bills together, and got together for bowling nights as well. As a result, our names were constantly confused and people would ask me 'When is Uncle Crowe's Garden playing again?' or 'How are things going with Mr. Green Crowe?" I also remember that...
Right as Rain ~ The Cotton Club ~ Dec 28, 1988 (audio only)
Переглядів 11314 днів тому
Atlanta was home to some excellent bands in the 1980s, and Right as Rain was one of the best! The wholesome and charismatic Rick Taylor played guitar and sang lead vocals; James St. James and Bruce Thelkeld were the rock solid bassist and drummer, and Jonny D added impeccably tasteful lead guitar. All four were/are extremely nice guys and supremely talented musicians. (1990s ATL musicians will ...
Drivin' n Cryin' ~ first show at 688 ~ Oct 9, 1985 (audio only)
Переглядів 708Місяць тому
When Drivin' n Cryin' debuted at a party at the Blue Rat Gallery, everyone was wowed by their fresh new sound. It was definitely punk (in my opinion), but there was a psychedelic influence as well. There were loud and raw songs mixed with quieter folk-influenced ones. Kevn Kinney and multi-instrumentalist/producer Frank French had been recording Kevn's songs in the studio (later to be released ...
The Prosecutors ~ live in Milwaukee! ~ ca. 1980 (audio only)

Before Drivin' n Cryin', there was The Prosecutors! Yes, Milwaukee gave us more than just PBR and Violent Femmes, as if that wasn't enough! Kevn Kinney fronted the band, and this tape shows that they were a force to be reckoned with. An anthology of their live and studio recordings was released in 2012 but is already out of print - you can add your name to a want list for it here: www.discogs.c...

I searched for years before I finally found a copy of this record - it might be the rarest record I own. And once I heard it, I understood why it is so rare - it's a bona fide punk classic! The band members went on to play in some well-known bands, including The Customers, Toenut, Man Or Astro-Man?, Mr. Crowe's Garden and Drivin' n Cryin'. This is the first and only single by the most popular lineup of one of 1980s Atlanta's best bands - Arms Akimbo! The band featured Tony Levitas on bass and vocals, Andrew Cylar on guitar and Alan Gamble on drums - three fantastic musicians who are still performing today! Andrew plays in a band called Rare Birds and Tony just released his fifth solo album!
The Ethel Mertz Experience ~ 1986 practice demo (a Dozen Demos #13)

Anyone who knows me won't be surprised that I decided to make it a 'baker's dozen'. This bonus demo comes from a short lived 'super group' called The Ethel Mertz Experience. The band included Chris Robinson, Keith Joiner and me - paying tribute to some of our favorite 1960s bands with acoustic guitars and three part harmonies. Keith plays the blistering leads whilst I strum the rhythm chords. I...

Here's a demo tape from a band that needs no introduction, though at the time they weren't well-known outside of Athens, GA. Their manager sent me this tape as I booked Athens bands at the Dugout; he was a nice guy and he wanted to increase their exposure in Atlanta. I was trying to pick up where 688 left off, booking new wave, college rock or whatever it was called at the time, and I think I a...

When I got the go-ahead to book rock bands at the Dugout, one of the first bands I wanted to book was YUR - an acronym for Your Universal Reality if I remember correctly. The band was fronted by Abstract and Kellye Kendrick; they were friends with the hippie scene and played some of the same clubs but I never considered them a jam band. I heard a wide variety of influences in their music, from ...
The Paralyzers ~ s/t ~ 1987 (a Dozen Demos #10)

One glance at the Paralyzers' individual influences makes it easy to see why they were one of my favorite Atlanta bands: British Invasion, West Coast psychedelic, pop/rock radio music, garage rock, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, heavy late 60s rock, and even rockabilly! The multi-talented Dave Weil wrote great songs, played tasteful guitar and sang with a powerful presence. Tim Childress and Paul B...

The other side of the cassette has a (noisy) audience recording that I think is the beginning of the set: Mountain Top, Count the Flowers, Everything Looks Better in the Dark, Legal Gun, Tina's Grocery. There are also some early mixes of tracks from the Everything Looks Better in the Dark album that I might upload if they sound different from the released versions.

Cool tape! There's an excellent recording of that Star Bar show with video no less: ua-cam.com/video/WNtfwrmMvVA/v-deo.html I was there and it was awesome. The prosecutors set was rockin' but, unfortunately, not on the video. Thanks for sharing this one! So many memories. Widespread Panic was probably the very first band I ever shot. I barely knew what I was doing, never got a good white balance and just about melted in the heat but what a great first concert to shoot! I found some footage on line from June 1996 - shaky camera, snap zooms, out of focus and bad white balance... seems about right. I always respected their approach to the music business - it's a great big pie and our little slice is more than sufficient.

THANK YOU for posting this! What you have here is a **very important piece** of Dex/Chapel Hill history, all fidelity/speed issues aside. Most of these tracks do not exist elsewhere. Do you have a way to make a high bitrate archival copy for posterity?

    • @Ted_Selke
      @Ted_Selke 3 місяці тому

Thank you! Yes, I could make a high bitrate copy. I actually corrected the speed on the first track as the tape runs much too fast - I lowered the speed until the guitar was in tune. I boosted the mids and adjusted the volume levels to make them more consistent. On the tape, some tracks are very loud and others are very quiet. Then I ran my DAW noise reduction to bring down the background noise level as it was very loud. I didn't do an individual mastering on each track, so there is probably room for improvement if someone wants to take the time to do that.

Steve! Thanks so much for your comment! I am thrilled that you are happy with the uploads; I hope that Gary is too. I wish I had a better quality tape of the Dugout show, which Gary might have. Was that the night you opened for Alex Chilton, or did you play one more time after that? I think the demo sounds fantastic, and I'm so glad that you don't mind my tacking on a few songs from your solo album. I think the music is amazing and everyone I have played it for agrees! I would love to catch up as well; you can send me a message on my website (it's my name dot com) and I'll e-mail you back. It's great to hear from you and I look forward to catching up more soon!

Great show, the end of the 2nd incarnation of the Mighty Q with a killer set list and performance, it will take a few hundred listens to register it all, thanks for sharing!

@@Ted_Selke The trouble with this show, but the thing that makes it great, is that very few non-Q fans would understand all of the musical jokes that Terry and Al threw in.
