  • Atlanta was home to some excellent bands in the 1980s, and Right as Rain was one of the best! The wholesome and charismatic Rick Taylor played guitar and sang lead vocals; James St. James and Bruce Thelkeld were the rock solid bassist and drummer, and Jonny D added impeccably tasteful lead guitar. All four were/are extremely nice guys and supremely talented musicians. (1990s ATL musicians will remember James as the man who brought all the great music to The Point in Little Five Points!). The band released their first EP in 1985 and this tape was recorded at the end of 1988 on the eve of their second LP release, graciously brought to us by DB Recs. Jonny D had recently departed and producer Brendan O'Brien plays lead guitar at this Cotton Club show.
The Cotton Club was a great venue, booked by Dan Nolen and Mike Reeves of The Nick in Birmingham, and later, Smith's Olde Bar in Atlanta. I have some more live tapes from the Cotton Club so please stay tuned! In the meantime, take a trip back to yesteryear and enjoy this concert from Right as Rain, with introduction by the great Deacon Lunchbox!

Yeah another great Atlanta band that should have got more traction in a world gone mad. You have a great tape vault, man....
I didn't know those ran the Nick. No wonder I liked it so much the only two times I was there. Seeing my besties Nashville Pussy.

Thanks so much - I still have a lot more to share! Yes, they were a super talented band - DB Recs signed the cream of the local crop.
The Nick was a fun spot; I enjoyed playing there and drove over to see a few shows as well, including Redd Kross on the Neurotica tour!
