Vinyl Community: Acid Archives Diaries - Sky Saxon - Masters of Psychedelia (New Rose, 1984)
Sky Saxon of the 1960's band The Seeds. One of his solo albums, post Seeds, that was mentioned in the Acid Archives. A good hard rock, psychedelic sound.

Recent Vinyl Finds in the form of the thread by Chris Propfe Spell V-I-N-Y-L (with needle drops)
I went to a Pandoras gig around 84. There was a guy walking around with a cape and cane. It turned out it was Sky Saxon.
The gig was at the Cavern Club.
Ooh I need to give this one a listen! Thanks man for a good video! New sub!
Great to see Sky still killing it 1984! This album is so underrated! I’m really digging it! Nice Seeds collection. 👍🏽👍🏽
Thanks Steve. Couldn't think of much to say, so I thought I would show related records.
Chris, awesome video, you have a great Sky Saxon collection. Mars Bonfire and Sky Saxon are definitely, two of the best pseudonyms in the history of Rock n' Roll! I dug side one and side two, I am inspired to grab a cd reissue. Sky Saxon worked with the Captain Trip label on the release of the 13 cd box set of Yahowha recordings titled, '' God And Hair''. My pal, Jim bought that box when it first came out, in 1998, I wish I owned it too. Sky, Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson, died on the same exact day, June 25, 2009.
Great overview Chris! I didn't know much about Sky's solo stuff so very interesting to hear. And thanks for keeping this great thread alive! Cheers
Thanks Jonas. Maybe you will return from Den Bosch will some additions to this thread yourself.
@@christopherkibler511 Absolutely, I hope I return with at least one nugget from the book. 🙂
Acid archives diaries is alive and well! I look forward to seeing the next four. This one was great. Sky was a lot older than I thought he was....he would have been 28 when the Seeds released Pushin' Too Hard. For some reason I was thinking those Nuggets-type bands really were kids who practiced in their parents' garage. Interesting info about the Redd Kross brothers working with him. Thanks for showing the records Chris!
I guess there were a few oldsters (28!) hopping on the psych/garage train!
l know Sky Saxon, l don't know this album. from what l can hear it sounds pretty heavy and daunting.... good pick
Thanks Sherv.
I have a few Sky Saxon albums but I did enjoy the samples from Masters of Psychedlia. That is a heck of a Seeds collection Chris. I’m glad you still doing the Acid Archives as it’s fun to look into your collection
Thanks Steve. Should have a few left in me.
Hi Chris, great entry and info, seems like interesting and cool artist. Few years ago I was looking seriously for a copy of his collaborating album with german psych band Vibravoid. Album name is Poetry of Love and its pretty cool and has great long track called Look What The Bombs Have Done. Never got it though. Cheers, petri.
Thanks Petri. I am going to try and stream it.
Everything I ever read about Sky suggested he was quite a character. Your videos are always fun and informative buddy-keep up the good work! -Gary
Good to hear from you Gary. I haven't seen any "Tales from..." anywhere from you for a while. Thanks, Chris
@@christopherkibler511
Hi Chris! I'm back for another lesson in music. Sky Saxon, of course, is new to me. Great album cover on Masters Of Psychedelia! I'm intrigued.
Brian, you may not learn anything here, but maybe you will see something different. Thanks, Chris
Always liked the Crescendo label....like what we are hearing, that live album looks pretty dang interesting ....cheers Chris watching
Thanks Lis.
I love the Seeds, nice 45, I’m looking for Web Of Sound, I’ve not heard much of the Sky albums, that album sounds good. Also I’m looking for the Documentary on Sky. Nice show
Thanks Dave. I will look for the documentary, now.
First to comment. I've had my copy of Masters of Psychedelia since the 80s. I remember reading somewhere that the album is made up of two separate sessions. Both much older than 1984.
Thanks Ron. I think the second side is from the mid-1970s. Not sure about side one.
Hi Chris! Cool theme, I dig Ian Matthews, but haven't heard that album. Now I have to check out Randy's original video. Cheers!
Thanks Jonas.
Wow, so many covers and so many that I have never heard! The only one I have is the Rascal's on the Platoon soundtrack.
Of all the versions the Rascals is one of the best.
Okay, like I told Randy, where is the Musak version. We all know this was popular in elevators lol
We need better collectors around here! Floyd Cramer may be as close as we get.
I think I have the Booker T album Chris. Seriously. Is there an artist on the planet that you do not have in your collection? {smile} Always love your videos. BTW. The Rascals were one of my top ten bands of the sixties. I finally got to see them live in 1988 at the Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary Show at Madison Square Garden~ Rob/Boston
Thanks Rob. Was it the whole band back together for the 40th? BTW, I do not have any Beyonce or Rick Astley (amongst many others) in my collection!
@@christopherkibler511 I cannot say the same Chris. I was given a self titled Beyonce album. It is still sealed. I never spun it. I will not admit to owning any Rick Astley. {smile} I do not think it was all of the original Rascals at the Atlantic 40th Annv Show. It was Felix, Gene and Dino Danelli. Eddie was missing~
I’ve never heard of a couple of those.
Wow! Aretha Franklin?
It's hard to argue with Aretha's version. I liked the disco version at the beginning too. But Ian Matthews was probably my favorite - he really brought a lot to the song. Great response Chris - thanks for jumping in!
Randy, you always do a great job setting the table for me!
Chris, my favorite was the Ian Matthews cover version. The first disco version you played was okay, but not as good as Donna Summer's disco version of ''MacArthur Park''. Speaking of ''groovin'', yesterday I went to a thrift store and a record store, my main target was the new Hendrix box.'' Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision''. The box is of course, more music for groovy children! I enjoyed Robert Plant's cover of ''Darkness, Darkness'' and Mott The Hopple's version of the tune is another good one.
Michael, the Ian Matthews version had a little reggae feel to it. I had forgotten that Brain Capers version of ''Darkness, Darkness''! Thanks, Chris
Wow Sam stayed true to the original! Aretha? cool now ... now she Soul it up!! 🎶🎶
Awesome!!! Just got home, and bam!! Something good to watch as I have lunch!! Ok watching my friend!! You Randy are the best✊🏻👏🏻
I hope the music helped the digestion.
@@christopherkibler511 😂 haha yes! Yes it did lol
Paul Motian, one of the great drummers to come out of The Bill Evans Trio. Great obscure finds, Chris! Digging it!
the tangerine zoo, way cool!
Thanks Dave. That was one that I found in the 1990's.
hi chris, new to your channel,, that lacewing is a good score,, any psych albums on mainstream are rare in my opinion!
Thanks Dave. I would like to get some more, but many of them are out of my price range!
@@christopherkibler511 only 2 i have on mainstream are The Superfine Dandelion and Big Brother and The Holding Company's first album.
Nice. I have the Big Brother, but would like to find a copy of Superfine Dandelion.
Chris, I remember watching Sherv's video that showed that Laszlo Sary album, is that what inspired you to buy it? I love Charlie Haden, his duo albums, ''Closeness'', ''The Golden Number'', '' Soapsuds, Soapsuds'' ( with just Ornette as a duo partner) and '' As Long As There's Music''( with just Hampton Hawes as a duo partner), are all long-time favorites. I saw Charlie play live a few times and got a chance to chat with him, we talked mostly about Country Music and American ''folk'' music, which he grew up with, playing with his family. He played his first live radio gig with his family, he was featured as a vocalist, he was only two years old! I was impressed that he spent so much time talking to me, and quietly answering my ''rapid- fire'' questions. I discovered Pat Thomas when I bought an Incus cd, ''The Derek Bailey Quartet'', with Tony Oxley, Matt Wand, and Pat Thomas. Of course, I enjoyed all the needle- drops as per usual!
Michael, Sherv's video was probably my subliminal trigger to buy the Laslo Sary album. At least he brainwashed me in a good way! I have a bunch of albums with Charlie Haden involvement, according to Discogs. More than I realized. I also enjoy some of his daughter's acapella albums, Petra. I don't think that I have that Derek Bailey Quartet album.
@@christopherkibler511 Chris, in regards to duo albums, there is a recent archive release, vinyl only, of Derek Bailey and Paul Motian, from the 1990's.
Hi Chris. Excellent assortment of the artists that are new to the VC and generally never shown. I tried to find some of the Melted Men "Breathe The Glass" album but no go. I was interested in the experimental side of it. The Black Sun Ensemble and the one that you pre-ordered are written down. I will check them out later on. Superb update Chris. I enjoy seeing and c hecking out any artists that are new to me. Especially avant-garde jazz and experimental anything. Thanks~ Rob/Boston
Thanks Rob. I am glad that you enjoyed it, and good luck if you try to search for anything.
Not only do you have the Stunty record, you have the Second State pastover UNPEELED😮
I can retire now!
Bill Vanoveer/Stuntrock Confusion. Same thing. I'm glad you decided to get Melted Men out, even though it isn't new. That cover is fantastic and the label too. Wow, six pianos at once for László. I'll bet the only time that piece was performed was for the recording; getting six pianos into one recording space is quite a task. I suppose a music school like Berkeley could put on a performance. Those were all really interesting - thanks Chris!
Thanks Randy. Six pianos takes some real estate to position.
cool finds chris, nice you got snail play ...
Thanks Sherv. Now I want two other Laszlo Sary albums that are on Hungaroton, but no US seller seems to have them.
Love side one on the detoni..that koga is beautiful i have had that one for years... Black sun ensemble is an interesting band i had a copy of that one long ago. Also love sary's stuff don't have that one though but probably somewhere on my wl..😂...nice update brother..much love chris
Thanks Chris. I just stumbled across the Koga album. Now I looking for some other Sary albums on Hungaroton, but they don't seem readily available in the US. I am glad that I got lucky with this one. Take care, Chris
No Ida where you find these albums at Chris, always amazing stuff. It does appear Stunty has been cloned, that album was visual proof of it. Melted amen had a fascinating cover.
Thanks Steve. I don't have my own personal record store (Radio Wasteland), so I have to dig for mine!
Hi Chris - I have to say that I enjoyed all of the needle drops. We even got some astronomy with the The Solar Model of Ibn Al-Shatir! Cool. You really have an eye (and ear) for the obscure! But, these are fascinating.
Thanks Brian. I know that it is no John Cale, but Pat Thomas has played with Lol Coxhill, who has played with Kevin Ayers who played with John Cale on that live at Bataclan album and the June 1, 1974 album. So, it is almost like I am making an extension to your series. I just forgot to mention that it tied in to the recent Lou Reed video and the John Cale series. If only I had thought of that in the moment!
@@christopherkibler511 That is quite the linkage to Cale though, and I was certainly not aware of it previously 👍
Hi Chris, lots of interesting, and weird, pickups. I'm not au fait with any of them with the exception of Black Sun Ensemble - picked a copy of their Lambent Flame (the album before Tragic Magic) just a short while ago. Really enjoyed it so will be keeping an eye out for more by them. Really liked the sound of the Bill Vanaver - is the rest of the album in the same vein? Cheers... Pete
Hey Pete. No, the Bill Vanaver if a folk album at heart. So most of the album has vocals and some folk standards, like If I Were A Carpenter, and Mad Tom Of Bedlam. The guitar is pretty good throughout.
Hi Chris. Well, I'm glad that avant garde music exists and there are folks who what to listen to it...But it's not something I'd spend any time with. I think I might like to attend a live performance, for the shear performative experience. I liked the Bill Vanaver. A bit hectic, but sounded great. The Melted Men sound cool. I also love the unique covers. Cheers - Hedley
Thanks Hedley. The Vanaver settles down into a more typical folk record with vocals for most of the rest of the album, but nice guitar throughout.
Fantastic video Chris, I liked all the samples and also some solo piano in there. The three first you showed are really intriguing. I love Black Suns a bit jazzy psych oriental take on some tracks, I have Lambent Flame on vinyl but their cd only stuff like Starlight, Hymn of master and Bolt of apollo is great. Cheers.
Most of my Black Sun Ensemble is on CD. I am glad that I finally got that Detoni album. Not sure about shakuhachi with piano, I might prefer piano with shakuhachi. Thanks
Very artsy stuff, I'm not familiar with any of it but enjoyed hearing about it. Cheers!
Thanks Jonas. I did get a copy of that Donovan's Greatest Hits, but the on-line seller claimed that he did not know that it was supposed to come with the booklet, so it ended up being really cheap.
Look forward to more of your archive and other threads cheers!
Hiya Chris👋🏻 really like Charlie Haden, great bass player....trippy and exploratory music you’ve shared....always bringing it, ty Chris🎶✊🏻
Hey Lis. Thanks for tuning in and being supportive.
@@christopherkibler511 absolutely 🎶✊🏻
Stunty does seem to have some resemblance to Vanaver haha, speaking of stunty, he played Detoni maybe a year ago or so and put it on my radar, great pickup. Otoroku is a label I like to keep an eye on as well, they put out some good stuff. Dig the last 2 records you sampled quite a bit.
Thanks Thijs. I can't remember if Stunty was responsible for this purchase or if he just confirmed that I was on the right track!
Hey Chris. I am pretty unfamiliar with this one. Not too expensive but I don't recall ever seeing it that I can remember.
Thanks Dom. I forgot to mention the albums rarity/availability is a 2, so it shouldn't be too expensive. I have few more reviews, so this thread will be going for a few more months, at least.
Great thread response Chris. There's not much love for Pere Ubu on the VC. I love them.
Chris, I love that you ''cherry-pick'' from all different music genres, everyone loves a drink with their listening experiences. However, at the many Grateful Dead concerts that I attended, I found time to mix in with ''The Wharf Rats'', a group of recovering drinkers and junkies, who were Deadheads too! I bought a Sonny Terry/ Brownie McGhee, Folkways album when I was a teen, it had the song, '' Drinkin Wine- Spo-de- Do ( mop- mop). I think the song was written by McGhee. I loved the Pere Ubu snippet. I attended the international, ''Terrastock #6'' music festival, here in R.I. Fursaxa was on the bill, I was highly impressed by her live set, the entire festival was quite memorable, Bridget St. John and Ghost ( the Japanese band) were the best. That Carla Bley Band with Elton Dean and Hugh Hopper and the other great players was one of her finest combos. The album was recorded in the studio despite the title. The only Wainwright song that I've heard is ''Dead Skunk'', I forget to explore his catalog.
Thanks Michael. Terrastock sounds cool. I have read an issue or two of the Ptolemaic Terrascope. I noticed that Bandcamp has a Terrastock #6 compilation CD with a Fursaxa track on it "Water Moon", which sounds really good.
Okay I have that Pere Ubu album. No doubt they did write that song all by themselves. Not the easiest listen haha. Nice job digging out some very obscure albums Chris. The stuff you have in your collection is always amazing
Thanks Steve. I did check the Jerry Lee Lewis song, but it is spelled differently and the printed lyrics are not the same.
Hi Chris! The cover on that Porter Wagoner album is hilarious. 😂
Thanks Mike.
hey Chris - I almost chose that Pere Ubu track, but I looked up the lyrics and wasn't sure what to make if them. This is a delightful collection of things that I am almost entirely unfamiliar with! You should win a prize for this 🙂
I just had to go by the title, because I couldn't understand the lyrics. When I look up the lyrics, I don't see any reference to drinking unless it is unstated that is what he is doing while contemplating the girl. Thanks Brian.
Wow, where did these come from? Far out record pull.
Penny and Jean! I've never heard of them before, but now I want to. Hardin/York sounded fantastic - great jamming! English Drinking Songs is a record I would definitely pick up if I saw it - I love the Riverside label. Great response to this thread Chris!
Thanks Randy. Penny & Jean may have been a subliminal purchase, as I had girlfriends by those names in the 1980's and 1990's with positive memories. I think that I forgot to mention the Hardin/York album title "Tomorrow, Today". They were both members of the Spencer Davis Group, with Eddie Hardin being post Steve Winwood in the group.
Pere Ubu is enough to drive anyone to drinking.
LOL
@@christopherkibler511 Was the Pere Ubu song even about drinking?
@@TheHogsEarReport Who knows. I’m not sure Pere Ubu even knows.
Ron, I have a little trouble making out the lyrics!!
