I grew up on Jake Holmes without ever knowing who he was because he later recorded TV commercial jingles in the 1970s and 1980s like US Army, Sure Deodorant, IBM PS/2, Legos, Reese's Pieces, he certainly had that distinct voice. It took me many years to discover who sang on those commercials and discovered he recorded a handful of albums before recording TV commercials.
@@christopherkibler511 In the 1980s watching television it was impossible to escape a TV commercial with Jake Holmes singing. Knowing his albums weren't exactly big sellers, he turned to writing commercial jingles because it gave him more steady income.
@@christopherkibler511 I have heard A Letter to Katherine December and the previous album thanks to UA-cam and I love what I'm hearing. As for the TV commercials Jake has done, they're all very familiar commercials. The US Army ad with "Be all that you can be", the Sure deodorant with "Raise your hand if you're Sure", Dr. Pepper with "Be a Pepper", Sears with "Come see the softer side of Sears", Ovaltine with "Can't get over Ovaltine", IBM PS/2 with "PS/2 it", many of them have been posted on UA-cam but I've seen all of those ads constantly back in the day. Whenever I hear a Letter to Katherine December I can instantly recognize him as the same voice as those TV ads mentioned.
Nice pick Chris. This is one I'm looking for. I have the Above Ground Sound but need this one as well. I think the others don't measure up but these two are the ones. Perhaps I will do the F&D but ha, would prefer to do a new video
Nice to see you again Chris. Always nice to see what you've been listening to and learning about artists I don't know much about, especially from this era of my youth.. I'm digging 'Leaves Never Break'... -Gary
Hi Chris, I love frantic songs! Softer folk I struggle with, give me some faster paced stuff. I enjoyed your samples, that really helped me understand the music. Leave Never Break did t sound too bad
Chris, I only know Jake Holmes due to his ''connection'' to Led Zeppelin. The song, ''Leaves Never Break'' is so much better than the ''frantic'', ''Saturday Night''. I'd much rather hear, ''Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting'' by Sir Elton, or '' Saturday Night Special'' from the Lynyrd Skynyrd live album, ''One More From The Road''.
Hi Chris - A Letter to Kathleen December sounds really interesting! Thanks for introducing me to it.

I didn't know that he did commercials.

I must have seen some, but didn't recognize who it was.

Once he left Tower Records his albums seemed less edgy.
Glad I finally caught a copy back in December. I think it's Jake's finest moment.

Thanks Gary. Good to hear from you.
I have the Leaves Never Break 45. Quite good!
I used to have his first album but it flew the coop. I have a single off that album too.
Judging by Discogs a lot of people would like those singles. Both really good songs. I do have the first album, just no cover for it. Thanks, Chris

Thanks Steve. There are some slower, singer-songwriter songs on here, too.

Michael, you left out the Bay City Rollers!
