Hey Sergio! Hope you had a lovely Christmas with your family. Have you tried Arnaud Sintes' build from March 27, 2024? Some useful improvements and some nice features. Works well so far...
Hi, Is there any youtube video link on that build? Thanks
Fantastico. Grazie. Mi sto esercitando!
Hey Mna, great guide you made here. Quite informative and up to date. What is this matte box you attached at 4:37? is it available for sale anywhere?
Thank you!! It’s a "mini mate box lite" from smallrig. I attach it directly on the lens using one of the adapter rings which comes with the matte box. You can see it in action in this other video ua-cam.com/video/r_L9oYIlZcE/v-deo.html
Grazie Sergio. I tuoi video mi hanno aiutato tanto con la mia nuova eos m. I tuoi consigli sono precisi e ben spiegati. Grazie ancora!
Mi fa piacere che i tutorial possano essere d’aiuto. Grazie per seguire il canale !

I can't believe you uploaded this 2 months ago! The timing! I need Magic Lantern on my old 5D3 and I was looking for an "in depth video" and never expected to find one created so recently! Thank you for doing this, friend! Quick question: Do you know if ML will allow me to use my camera as a webcam via HDMI and a capture device without it timing out after 30 minutes?
This is AMAZING!
Who is the winner?
The winner of the giveaway is in the video description.
since i cant find any awnser to my question anywhere ill just ask you. how tf am i supposed to get the card spanning files back together if i only have a .mlv and a .m00 file? everyone is talking abt .raw files that are non existent in any of my folders. and why there is so much grain in my video even on 160 iso?
Regarding card spanning, you have to copy both files( .MLV ) and (.m00) for each shot in the same folder on your computer. Then from there you have to drop only the .MLV files into the MLV app. Regarding video noise I don’t know why you have so much grain at ISO 160, I can shot at ISO 1600 and video noise is little and I can get rid of it easily using Noise reduction in Davinci Resolve. Video Noise also depends on light conditions, if your image is very underexposed and then you want to recover some shadows in post you are going to get a lot of noise. It’s always better overexpose 1 stop without clipping the lights and the in post lowered the exposure obtaining a clean image.
There is one thing that really bothers me about digital video vs film: film always has a lack of sharpness and I am not exactly sure why. It is not because of lack of sharpness from the lens. You see this in old movies. I think it is a combination of jitter from the movement of the film itself, not just when shooting when the camera and film both move, but but also when transferring and editing on moviola, so it accumulates. But I'm not sure. Every type of film from 8mm to 70mm shows this. Digital always looks "too sharp" to really be cinema, and often much too sharp. These processing plugins don't really "solve" this problem. Footage gets grainy but still too sharp and much too stable. I actually put a small gaussian blur on the whole footage as well. I'm looking for a really good jitter plugin that produces minute motion blur. If you just use jitter plugin on digital, it only moves a sharp image around - different thing. Any experience with that?
For me the moiré/aliasing was a dealbreaker for the Canon APS-C cameras. I could never get rid of it and it looked terrible. Simply couldn't use it. The other issue is that low light sensitivity with APS-C is very poor by modern standards (Sony A7 or Canon 5d). Maybe I will try ML again with a 5d now that prices are lower.
@@UncleSubBass I agree with the problem of moire/aliasing in the eos-m, for this reason when I shoot with the eos-m I only use 1x3 mode. The down side is the Rolling shutter but bacause I use lens with óptical stabilization or trípode, or saddle bag, I'm not worried. Regarding video noise, DaVinci Resolve does an excellent job when it comes to cleaning up the image.
Hello Sergio. Is the Shimbol compatible with the EOS M? I’ve had some problems getting the 1080i to work sometimes.
On my M2 it only records for a couple of seconds. Using this card: SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I Memory Card - C10, U3, V30, 4K UHD, SD Card - SDSDXXD-128G-GN4IN
I don’t have the M2, so I don’t know how that camera works with magic lantern. Your SD card is ok, unless it's a fake card.
Sergio - While it seems that the 5D Mark3 development on Magic Lantern hasn't moved forward since Danne's last (2/3/23) update - I certainly appreciate your continuing postings. This one (in particular) on the 5D Mark 3 is of special interest, as you touch on capturing an image in 3:2, Open Gate Mode. I wasn't aware that a 3:2 aspect ratio was available when using the 2/3/23 firmware update ! Following your recorded example on how to setup the camera for Open Gate, recording was achieved smoothly. I'm now in the process of processing some of the recorded files. With "Open Gate" being such a "hot" topic for new cameras, I'm sure another UA-cam video (by you) specifically dealing with the 5D Mark 3 and Open Gate recordings would be appreciated and could stimulate "new" interest in Magic Lantern. Bilal's Magic Lantern "Crop Mood" for the EOS M seems to also provide Open Gate for that camera - perhaps you could include information for that cameras too ! Regards from Houston Texas USA
Thanks for your feedback, I really appreciate it!
Thank you for the video! Which settings you would prefer for the best cinematic resolution?
Thank you!! The images with a cinematic look don't depend on the resolution of the image. You can film using any resolution, from HD to 4K or higher. It all depends on the composition of the image, the lenses used, the care taken with lighting, and the final touch of good color grading in post-production.
The contrast is too high, if you would have adjusted the contrast and brightness that footage would look sweet! Could use color correction as well.. looks really good but it can look great if you tweak it in post.
Thank you for sharing your opinion about the image; I respect it as it’s based on your personal taste. As for me, I’ve kept the contrast levels at a very healthy range, making my decisions based on my own taste, of course. I monitored the waveforms, ensuring the blacks stayed above 5 nits, using a professionally calibrated reference monitor for Rec.709 with a gamma of 2.2, optimized for viewing on computer screens, phones, and iPads. Contrast perception can vary greatly depending on the medium used to view the video. For example, if you watch it on a TV or a monitor with uncalibrated contrast and brightness settings, the result may look very different. This is precisely why I use a professional reference monitor when performing color grading for my videos.

Hello Sergio, One more question please, Your camera setting for exposure I assume its manuel mode? Many times I use P, because I found it difficult to find the right exposure. The only thing is the shutterspeed in this mode P. That's always 30 fr/sec. I am curious what you use. Greetings
I only use Manual mode, M
@@russo-filmmaking Thank's
Beautiful
Thank you!! Glad you liked it!
Hello Sergio, interesting tutorial. I have managed to get 3520-1730 aspect ratio 1-2 with 12 bit with this camera. With just a few changes in the settings. At 24.37 min. you say with these settings you probably get orange and red recording. What do you mean by this, that you get just orange and red recording? I have no issue with these settings. I use Danne's build. That build has a overclocking of 160,192 and 240 Mhz. But can you explain me what you mean with orange and red recording? greetings Richard
Hi Richard, Green, orange, and red are the colors of the camera icon that appears in the top right corner of the screen while recording. Green usually indicates that recording is continuous, orange means the recording may last several minutes as the camera is under strain and might stop recording without warning, and red means the recording will only last a few seconds.
@@russo-filmmaking Ah, thank's for explaining this. I thought you mean the picture itself. Now it's all clear. Thank's for your great information and all the effort you put in it. Greetings
Hello Sergio. Thank you for this video. Are only these HDMI resolution outputs available? 480p or 1080i 50Hz or 1080i 60Hz. I am PAL region, I don't see 576p (625) available 😞 But grateful for what we have! I think HDMI is 4:2:0 8-bit? I will test 1080i50 (PAL Australia).
Thank you!! With all my honesty, I’ve never paid much attention to the HDMI resolution because to my eyes the quality I get in my monitors is more than sufficient for focusing and check the frame. So I wouldn’t know an answer to your question. I just plug in the monitor and that’s it.
Sergio, thank you very much and may God bless you for these amazing videos. Incredibly useful and kind of you to share. ... much Love from Tasmania o/ - Anthony.

Hello, thank you for the very informative video. However I don't see the link to the latest version of Magic Lantern in the description, is that normal?
I checked it and the link is in the description and it works. It says “Download Magic Lantern Danne’s version 5DIII “
Is there a crop mode in magic lantern in 5d mark3 too?
Unfortunately there isn’t a crop mood for the 5D III
Nice video! how did you change the focus while recording? I can do it with the half shutter before starting, but not after it records (Crop Mood danne build)
Thank you! I use half shutter while recording to zoom in 10x and focusing.
thanks! thats really helpfull. you are blessed ! :D
i am your new fan. I love my eos m ML.. i am stunned with the quality and colors you can get from such small old camera. it's just pure insaness.
oh!! thank you so much for your kind words.
Glad it helped!
good job!
Thank you! Cheers!
Goooodddd Job Bro! Thanks!
Thank you!!
what mode do you recommend with a anamorphic lens? i have a 2x anamorphic
The ideal would be an aspect ratio 6:5. But it’s not possible with the 5DIII. For the 5DIII the ideal anamorphic lens would have to be 1.6x
Thx u Sergio Russo that a very clean and clear explanation of something complicated 5 stars tuto ...
Thank you!!
That is amazing. Will it be possible for you to provide some footage to download?
Thank you!! Unfortunately I don´t have an online drive where to drop my footage and normally due to my limited space in my hard disk I delete all the used file keeping only the final master
@ no worries, keep up the good work.
The 5.7K video doesn't seem to playback smoothly no matter what options are used to convert the MLV file, even after exporting out of Premiere to an .mp4 the motion is super jerky
When filming in 5.7k, do you use card spanning? And when you import files from both the SD and CF cards to your computer, do you put them in the same folder before loading the .MLV files into the MLV app? My footage is very smooth and fluid, like most people’s who use that mode. There might be something wrong with your computer (maybe it’s not fast enough) or with your settings. In the MLV app, it’s normal for playback to be jerky, but I think you can improve it by lowering the playback quality. However, after exporting the material, if everything is done correctly, the playback will be smooth like the one of any other camera filming at 24 frames per second.
@@russo-filmmaking hmm, I did not import from both cards but I did put file spanning on... how does that work since you can only import the MLV into MLV app... is there a video showing how to do that the correct way when card spanning? I'll try again if I can figure out the correct method.
@@RooftopKoreansMusic so, after filming you need to put in the same folder on your computer the clips from your Sd card and CF card. They have the same date and time information, only the extension changes. Then import in ML app only the MLV clips and not the others. The reason to do this is because when you film with card spanning, the clips are recorded partly on the SD card and partly on the CF card to achieve better data writing flow. The important thing is that both the files from the SD card and the CF card are placed in the same folder before to import only the .MLV files into ML app. You can see this procedure in this video ua-cam.com/video/KzNaJAztjpY/v-deo.htmlsi=YN-0raZ62ARERJfk
@@russo-filmmaking Im testing some clips I shot today now... it's better, but still not good enough to be usable... there are still jumps in every clip that makes using (the 5.7K at least) unacceptable. I'll have to try that first one you recommend that's closer to 1080 but widescreen
@@RooftopKoreansMusic Just drag the files from both cards into MLV app. The MLV app does it all. That's all.
I stay with the 5viii
Sir. Please can you help me out with things needed to record sound from EOS M with magic lantern row?
you can grab audio directly in camera connecting an external microphone.
I love Dehancer with EOS M result! I'm exciting to make videos like that ❤
until I can make the commitment to a proper film camera, it looks like Dehancer is the way to go!
The MLV files will only write to the CF card... which I don't want. I set the SD card as the record card in the canon menu and the ML menu... it will still only record to the CF card... kind of annoying since I want the CF only for the ML install and to have the CF card do all the recording.
CF has a best write speed compared to the SD card. For this reason if you put the two cards into your 5D mark III, magic lantern prefer the CF card for recording the ML files. Otherwise you could have problem with your write speed.
Sergio! What version of ML are you using? Amazing work with dehancer btw!
Thank you! For my EOS M I use the latest Crop Mood modified by Danne. It’s the August 24th version
Dehancer put to some proper use! Most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference!

Sir I have a canon 700d which SD card do you recommend 128gb 170 Mb/s or 128 200Mb/s and bit confused.
If you refer to the Sandisk Extreme Pro SD card, both work very well. I have the two versions and they give me the same results
