Thanks for the video. I have a question. If the focus mode is set to AF and you use half-shutter to autofocus, then you start shooting, then you point the camera at something else - will the camera keep the focus you set, or will it attempt to autofocus on the new subject?
Linear scales have consistent measures between different points, whereas logarithmic scales have progressing measurements between points. In the first case the values between two consecutive points on the line doesn't change, no matter how high or low you are. While Log is based on exponents, and the value between two consecutive points not only changes, but also has a distinct pattern. Eos M Raw is Linear and doesn't have any logarithmic modification
@@russo-filmmaking ok, thank you for the explanation, very helpful 👍 my histogram was set to log, but now linear, and l hope it helps me with better exposure.
What crop mood version are you using? There are two version. In the first one you can’t customize the buttons. In the last one you can do it. Last version is the April 18th version
Hi, If you are referring to the LP-E12 batteries I'm not sure, cause I've never noticed it and I never took the time or make some test. This is because for my filmmaking style, normally I take little shots and from what I remember I never filmed more than 6-7 minutes without stopping the recording ( and it happens only when I film myself talking in a UA-cam video).
@@russo-filmmaking Thanks Serrus, I live stream 3 hours at a time with the yolobox pro. There might be more power options out there. EOS M arriving tomorrow. Perfict for hill walking and live streaming easy to carry and set up. You pointed me in the right direction. Cheers
when I zoom in and then press half shutter doesn't do nothing... (actually sometimes works the autofocus if I zoom and then hold left arrow) ....if I press half shutter without the zoom I get the frame that would actually come out.... I believe am using the same canon lenses as you in this video... I wonder Is it possible to autofocus during recording?
I'm using an Android phone as external monitor , but in a bright sun day I cant see very well the screen. what do you do in this case? I'm thinking to add a matte screen protector to avoid reflections
You can try to make a DYI monitor hood for your cell. I think that it's the only solution. I use a feelworld Lut7 Pro /2200nits external monitor. It's very bright and I can see clearly the image even in a very sunny day.
Grazie ^^
Unsure if you’ve had this issue, but in all modes the live view is frozen for me, if it’s cropped or zoomed in however it seems fine? Do you know of a fix for this?
What crop mood are you using, what resolution or aspect ratio? did you have switched from AF to MF in the canon Menu? and did you have set AF Method as Flexizone Wide (the one which is in the middle) as I explained in the video?
@@russo-filmmaking I’ve mostly used 4.8k 2.35:1, have tried with 5.2k and 4.4K as well, the AF is set to wide and manual and crop mood is the latest build
With the setting you have, camera works amazing for me without any problem. So I suggest to format again your sd card in your computer. I always use ExFat. Then copy again the last Bilal build on your card and install it on your EOS M. And follow all the correct steps. This have to solve your problem, if not something wrong is in your canon settings. And other question is what SD card do you use?
@@russo-filmmaking I have a UHS-II samsung sd card, however i seem to have found the issue, when fps override is enabled it's frozen, when it's disabled it's not
@@ryzechdev perfect👍, never touching fps override with this build. As I suggest in my previous video we have to stay only with the crop mood presets to get the best of this build
I normally don’t use focus peacking because I think it’s not enough reliable in magic lantern, but I had no problems to use it in crop mood, you can activate it as in the old versions. I use the latest crop mood build modified by Danne.
Hello Sergio, a question about the Canon EOS M. About the anamorphic crop mode, are you satisfied about the sharpness of this setting with this camera. I work with the Canon 5DMark3, the recorded resolution with the anamorphic mode is 1920-2340 and stretched 5740-2340. The picture itself looks fine, but I find the sharpness not brilliant. The details are far from sharp. thanks again Richard
Sharpness also depends a lot of the lens you use. Moreover when I shoot with the EOS M I don't pay much attention to it because finally a get a sharp image through my workflow. I can match my M to the BMPCC 4K and make it more sharper than the Pocket 4k .In same case I use Topaz Ai which give me incredible results (you have to know how to use it correctly in order to not generate artifacts). If you look at the final footage with a more sophisticated color grade (whatch it in 4k) at the end of the my video, that image is very very sharp.
@@russo-filmmaking Thank's again for your answer. Indeed it's very sharp the last image. You mean the shot of the women (your wife) with the dog I guess. Was this recorded in 1080P and upscaled? Because the Canon EOS M can not record this resolution with 16-9. The aspect ratio with 4K is 1:2.39 with the Canon EOS M I thought. sorry for all these questions, but its very interesting. greetings Richard
@@richardrem with crop mood you can know shoot (1x3) 4.2K 16:9 1376x2322 (2.03x crop), and this is my favorite 16:9 mode. I filmed the video using it. So the final resolution was 4,128 x 2322 and I downscaled it to 3840x2160. You can also shoot (1x3) UHD 16:9 1280x2160 (2.18x crop). I prefer 4.2K because more resolution and less crop.
With the latest crop mood modified by Danne, you can use the auto focus function. But it’s very bad and slow . So if you use the eos M or other cameras with magic lantern you have to learn to pool manually focus like people do when shoot movies. You can use magic zoom during recording or assign focus aid (present in the Danne Crop Mood version) to the shutter for focusing while recording
Thanks!! I always set more hacks to on and I don’t turn to off because doing this when you film with high resolutions or HFR, the camera start to be unstable generating in some cases pink frame
Hi, thank you for this useful video. I have problems with the buttons, L/R supposed to control aperture. It doesn't work for me. I am using a Canon pancake 22mm f2. Any suggestions welcome. And if I only roll the wheel the shutter speed doesn't change too... My shutter lock in settings is OFF.
if you set the buttons as in my video L/R works if you hold and press the R wheel for a moment before to roll it. I explain it in my video. I don't own a 22mm pancake so I don't know why you can't change the shutter, scrolling the wheel. It works with all my lenses. Have you tried with another lens? Is your wheel working properly? sometime buttons and wheel have to be change because they died
@@russo-filmmaking Thank you. I double checked but it still doesn't work for me. I don't have any other lens to check with. I started EOS M in normal mode (without ML Crop Mood), pressing the set button. In the original Canon mode, the wheel is working and the left/right buttons of the wheel too. So I guess I missed a setting in ML somewhere.
@@russo-filmmaking I am still stuck with the left/right buttons not working for me. However, I noticed that once I set up L/R buttons as in your videos, instead of changing aperture, it changes what is indicated by the red arrow in the following screenshot: pic.infini.fr/XsPp9k12/J4M4iPkk.jpg
When you finish recording, does the monitor screen turn off and on? I'm currently using an Osee lilmon5 ans every time after a shot is done, the screen goes black and then back on
When I turn on the camera and then turn on the monitor sometime the monitor is black. Sometime the same happens when I turn off the monitor and the camera display appears black. When it happens I press the zoom button (that in my case it's the set button on the camera) and it fix it. Try to do the same when you finish recording if the monitor turn black. Never it append to me when I finish recording.
Autofocus when recording is possible with Danne build (the ML version before Crop Mood) but it’s very slow and not precise in many cases. You can use autofocus before recording as I explained in my video.
1x3 and 1:1 modes don’t have aliasing an moire but have problems with rolling shutter. On the other side 3x3 modes generate in some cases aliasing and moire but they dont’t have rolling shutter problems . My preferred modes are 1x3 modes: for 2.35:1 aspect ratio I use 4.8k 14-12 bit depending of light conditions and for 16:9 aspect ratio I use 4.2k 14bit. 2.5k or 2.8k have a sharper image but crop factor is more than 3x
@@toxotis70 please check my previous video where I talk deeply about all the mods and how to get the best of each of theme setting the correct bit-depth. In that video I talk about the crop factor of both 4.8k and 4.2 k
@@_joshuacray I would use 2 options: 1) set crop mood to 3x3 1080p 16:9 14bit, then after refresh with the menu button, in raw tab select under aspect ratio 4:3 and under resolution rotating the wheel select 1152x1160. With this method you'll get 4:3 continuous recording, and you have to set kill global draw to off because otherwise you will not be able to see correctly the 4:3 framing. 2) the second method is the one I prefer because has more quality and less aliasing: use the setting for 1x3 4.2k 16:9 14bit that I explained in the video (leave kill global draw to on) and then in post-production crop sideways the image to get 4:3 aspect ratio. You'll get continuos recording, no aliasing, more quality. I shot a horror short film with this last method which I'll soon upload in my channel
Check your exposure, ettr around 0.9-0.1, then be sure your bit depth is set as lossless. Some time People changing their bit depth from the raw tab make the error to select 14-12 bit istead of 14-12 bit lossless and it gives only a few seconds of recording. To avoid this mistake Bit depth must be changed only from de crop mood tab

Check this video to see what resolution you can get with the EOS M and Magic Lantern Crop mood, and their limitation ua-cam.com/video/EPFWQwXLr4A/v-deo.html This is a 14 old camera, which was mainly created for pictures and not for video, so you can´t get true 4K. But if you learn how to use it, you can get better quality footages than a lot of 4K cameras.
Yes, but not continuos autofocus. As I explain in the video you point your subject, half clik the shutter button to activate the autofocus in your Electronic lens and then start to film. Follow the steps in the video to activate the correct settings in the canon menu
im using the crop mood from june 2023, when I try to record raw, the playback only shows a black screen. and I can record anything higher than 720p 10 bit raw before it stops recording and empty the buffer
what SD card do you use? are you filming in lossless or uncompressed raw? how disd you set sdoveclock and small hacks? have you set raw quality in the canon menu? and what resolution did you set in the canon menu?
@@russo-filmmaking I don’t know what scared I’m using, I’m trying to film uncompressed raw, I overlock the sd card and I’m using the small hacks, I set the quality to raw on canon. But still dosent work
@@thevrboi sorry I mean SD card (not scared), what Sd card are using. You must to use lossless. It’s impossible to film uncompressed for more than a few seconds. You have to set 14bit lossless under the raw tab and never touch it again. Then when you want to change your color depth you have to do it from the crop mood settings.
I don’t know whether to be impressed by the extended functionally Canon built into the EOS M that Magic Lantern unleashed, or to think they should be ashamed that they didn’t exploit it themselves.
Please tell me how you got 81MB/s write. My 700D is capable of 240MHZ speeds with SD104 but my Sandisk Extreme Pro 128gb 200mbit/s won't write above 67MB/s speeds
OK. I usually get between 70-80MB/s shooting in high resolution 1x3 and less than 70 MB /s when shooting 3x3. I use Sandisk Extreme Pro Sd Cards (256gb 200 MB/s type) so I can't tell you why you can't exceed 70MB /s. Our cards are the same, only the capacity changes.
I think that you need some interface, but honestly I don't now because I'm a Mac user and never I tried to connect the EOSM to my laptop. Surelly You can get an answer to your question in the Facebook EOSM community facebook.com/groups/mlvraw
1736 x 3 = 5208: the image is anamorphic and you have to de squeeze it by 3, like when you use anamorphic lenses, I explained it in the video where I made a deep test on crop mood
@@russo-filmmaking its still a little strange to me, as I always like to shrink rather than expand footage, and if lines have been thrown away you would think that would be more visible if scaled up. but perhaps not as footage looks ok to me
@@beatskool101the camera, via Magic Lantern, is using a pixel binning method on the sensor to squeeze the image for better image quality. It's quite complex to get your head around but there's lots of info online. Definitely not just resizing the image, it's extremely technical with lots of science going on.
One of the most important thing when you shoot at high resolution like 5.2k or 4.8k with high bit depth like 14 or 12bit, you have to avoid high contrast scene with very luminosity áreas. So controlling your exposure and the general lighting of your scene it's a very importan factor to get good results. For example If I shoot in exteriors with high luminosity if I'm in 4.8k mode I lower my bit depth to 12bit and in same extreme cases up to 10bit. Latelly I'm shooting 4.6k 2.2:1 aspect ratio with a crop factor of x1.8, and it works very well in 14bit and 12bit in almost all lights conditions.
In the video I never said that we can get continuous AF. We can get autofocus with electronic lens before starting recording like I explain in the video, but not continuous AF. Now, I'm not sure because I did't try it yet, but I think that with the latest crop mood modified by Danne we can get continuous AF, even if take in count that continuous AF with magic lantern is slow and very unstable.

Thanks!! I use Sandisk Extreme Pro 170MB, I suggest you get 250gb or 512gb. The Sandisk Extreme Pro 200MB version also works. There are other cards that works well but Sandisk Extreme Pro is highly proven. Only be sure that it's an original one because there are a lot of imitation
@@russo-filmmaking Thanks for the feedback! Greetings from Brazil.
Thanks for the video. I have a question. If the focus mode is set to AF and you use half-shutter to autofocus, then you start shooting, then you point the camera at something else - will the camera keep the focus you set, or will it attempt to autofocus on the new subject?
Thanks!! the camera will keep the focus, unless you don't change it. Crop mood doesn't allow you to get a continuos autofocus.
@@russo-filmmaking Thanks for the clarification!
In the histogram menu you choose linear, is that better then the raw setting?
Hi!! if you check well that part of the video, "Histogram Type" is setting on Raw- based(RGB). I only change the scaling method from Log to Linear.
@@russo-filmmaking oh ok, then what is the difference between linear and log?
Linear scales have consistent measures between different points, whereas logarithmic scales have progressing measurements between points. In the first case the values between two consecutive points on the line doesn't change, no matter how high or low you are. While Log is based on exponents, and the value between two consecutive points not only changes, but also has a distinct pattern. Eos M Raw is Linear and doesn't have any logarithmic modification
@@russo-filmmaking ok, thank you for the explanation, very helpful 👍 my histogram was set to log, but now linear, and l hope it helps me with better exposure.
Can you help? Customize buttons is missing in my prefs menu- do you know how I can restore this so I can customize my setting please
What crop mood version are you using? There are two version. In the first one you can’t customize the buttons. In the last one you can do it. Last version is the April 18th version
Hi how long does the battery last continuously recording 7:28
Cheers

Too bad there's no option to store and recall presets. Other then that, Crop Mood is a giant leap forward. Enjoyed your videos!
I agree !!

I use Viltrox dc-550, is it possible to use the latest build to use ML peak focus?
now, i use ML but the old builds. And i cant use peak focus.
The details are far from sharp.
thanks again
Richard
The aspect ratio with 4K is 1:2.39 with the Canon EOS M I thought.
sorry for all these questions, but its very interesting.
greetings
Richard
@@richardrem with crop mood you can know shoot (1x3) 4.2K 16:9 1376x2322 (2.03x crop), and this is my favorite 16:9 mode. I filmed the video using it. So the final resolution was 4,128 x 2322 and I downscaled it to 3840x2160. You can also shoot (1x3) UHD 16:9 1280x2160 (2.18x crop). I prefer 4.2K because more resolution and less crop.
I can’t autofocus in recording mode?
Then how I can focus moving subjects?
With the latest crop mood modified by Danne, you can use the auto focus function. But it’s very bad and slow . So if you use the eos M or other cameras with magic lantern you have to learn to pool manually focus like people do when shoot movies. You can use magic zoom during recording or assign focus aid (present in the Danne Crop Mood version) to the shutter for focusing while recording

Never it append to me when I finish recording.
can autofocus while recording or the focus can only be done before resting the record button ?

which mode has the best image , without moire/aliasing and continues recording ?
1x3 and 1:1 modes don’t have aliasing an moire but have problems with rolling shutter. On the other side 3x3 modes generate in some cases aliasing and moire but they dont’t have rolling shutter problems . My preferred modes are 1x3 modes:

Is 4:3 possible in Crop Mood? Can’t seem to find the option..
Your 77 is green but in my case it 100% would be red or yello in the best case hmm

Check this video to see what resolution you can get with the EOS M and Magic Lantern Crop mood, and their limitation ua-cam.com/video/EPFWQwXLr4A/v-deo.html
This is a 14 old camera, which was mainly created for pictures and not for video, so you can´t get true 4K. But if you learn how to use it, you can get better quality footages than a lot of 4K cameras.

If 4k is 3840 x 2160, I'm wondering how 1736x2214 is classed as 5.2k?
1736 x 3 = 5208: the image is anamorphic and you have to de squeeze it by 3, like when you use anamorphic lenses, I explained it in the video where I made a deep test on crop mood
@@russo-filmmaking its still a little strange to me, as I always like to shrink rather than expand footage, and if lines have been thrown away you would think that would be more visible if scaled up. but perhaps not as footage looks ok to me
@@beatskool101the camera, via Magic Lantern, is using a pixel binning method on the sensor to squeeze the image for better image quality. how u got 82mbp/s and yellow color
What a shame i cannot have continuous AF on ML 😔😔😔
In the video I never said that we can get continuous AF. We can get autofocus with electronic lens before starting recording like I explain in the video, but not continuous AF. Now, I'm not sure because I did't try it yet, but I think that with the latest crop mood modified by Danne we can get continuous AF, even if take in count that continuous AF with magic lantern is slow and very unstable.
