Super helpful! I am new to Magic Lantern and I could not understand why my images were coming through underexposed until I watched your video. Your videos should be required viewing for all Magic Lantern users! Thank you!
Thank you Sergio for an informative and precise document on an important but rarely discussed topic. As usual, I watch your instructive projects with great pleasure, absorbing new, fascinating knowledge about Magic Lantern - Crop Mood.
I noticed this some time back. Seems ML allows two correct exposure options. A bright 'technically correct exposure' and a dark (cinematic) exposure... this is best illustrated by your demonstration in of your exposure discrepancy with ire on the false color. Look at the shorts with the lady. One looks dark but cinematic, while the other looks bright but almost British TV technically correct. Basically the exposure determined the look. The I technically correct and creative correct.
Thanks!! More light means more information in dark areas and it helps with video noise. Then we can lower the exposure in post, trying to balance the shadow and get the look we are looking for.
Hi Sergio, I had the opportunity to use your valuable advice. The result is a short film about my new passion for living with bees in the mountains. Most of the shots were taken with Canon EOS-M Crop Mood 5.2K 12Bit. I caught a Wild Bee Swarm in June 2023. This was the beginning of a new challenge, how to work with the bees. My bees have a “comfortable pied à terre” in a Layens Horizontal Hive in my backyard. I recently performed my first inspection of the hive, video is on my channel, the bee colony survived the harsh winter!
Well man, your shots are great. Some bees details are amazing and I liked so much the snow scenes at the end. This could be a beautiful short documentary if you could edit the duration to about 8-10 minutes introducing a voice over explaining your works and the bees behavior, that would help a lot with spreading your video to more people. Share the link of your video on the Facebook group "MLV RAW ON EOS M", the greatest community for Magic Lantern EOS M passionate people, it could help you to get more views and followers, explaining how you shoot your video. By the way what lenses did you use?, the images are very sharp, what other camera did you use for your shots (you said most of the shots were taken with the EOS-M, so other shots were taken with another camera I suppose)
@@russo-filmmaking will do some tests. I tested with a light meter a long time ago and found the same discrepancy of 1 or 2 stops from what is on screen. The problem I found is "real time preview". Try using the "framing preview" for exposure instead in your test to see if you have a similar result as me. Faming preview is more accurate I believe
I tested it. Really you are right. In framing mode light gray corresponds to green. So we can say that if you are in framing mode the magic lantern legend has a normal behavior like most of the cameras with green 18% gray. It doesn't mean that it's more accurate than real time preview. We all shot using realtime preview, (framing is low quality and jittery, not acceptable), we only have to read the false color legend in a different way using as middle gray the light gray. The reading will be as accurate as the reading used in framing mode, only the interpretation of the legend changes. But I learned something new: thanks!!
@@russo-filmmaking yes agree 100%. When I say more accurate I mean it's closer to my Sekonic Light meter reading and the final RAW file without needing to compensate too much, as you must do for the discrepancy in Real Time Preview. RTP is much better for monitoring and shooting especially once you become aware of how best to expose for it to keep detail in the shadows. Pleased you found the info useful🙂
@russo-filmmaking I'm just curious, what kind of monitor do you use to grade footage from eos-m? I'm considering getting a Mac mini for editing, but when I looked at monitors acceptable for grading I was shocked how expensive they were.
Hi, I use Asus ProArt 27” PA27UCX-K 4K as reference monitor calibrated to gamma 2.2 , it’s relatively expensive but it can be calibrated and it came with "x-rite i1 Display Pro” for its calibration. I connected this monitor to my MacBook Pro through Ultrastudio Monitor 3G to get a clean signal . For my UI I use AUSUS ProArt 27” PA278CV 1440P (so I don’t have to downscale the monitor display resolution) directly connected to my laptop via USB-C. This monitor is a lot cheaper even if the quality is very good; it can't be calibrated, but I set it to gamma 2.2 via preset and with some adjustments to brightness and contrast, I was able to bring it quite close, image-wise, to the reference monitor. And finally as 3rd monitor I use the laptop one.
@russo-filmmaking Thanks for sharing. I've seen that monitor mentioned, along with Ultrastudio monitor 3g, but that makes your 4k display essentially 1080p right? You also got that Light Illusion Colorspace software to go with the probe ? That monitor is too expensive for me right now as a beginner, so I'm looking at ProArt PA279CV which I saw mentioned as a cheap and not too bad compromise. But along with that I need that BM Ultrastudio ($125), the Xrite probe ($339), and the software Light Illusion ColourSpace LTE ($800). So over $1200 extra on top the display just to get the cheapest set up to work... Wish there was a less expensive way to get into this as a beginner...
@@skyscraperphilosopher8476 ProArt PA279CV is ok. You can use the preset gamma 2.2 or sRGB for grading footage for watching on phone, tablets or computer displays or gamma 2.4 for broadcast deliveries. You don’t need any calibration tools because this monitor can’t be calibrated. But the presets are quite good enough for UA-cam or social media. The ultra studio 3G deliver a 1080P image on my 4K reference monitor which is enough for editing and color grading, then I export the final product in 4K and colors are very accurate. If you want to use the ultra studio you need two monitors, one for the clean signal and one for your UI. So really you don’t need it.
