Find the Chrome Waterfall

The Pharoah looked out upon the endless expanse of sand and the sweat was pouring from his royal armpits down to his golden sandals. Still, he had to sound confident as he addressed his finest warriors. “Now, hear the words of your Pharoah as you are sent on your most sacred (and frankly impossible) mission - to find the CHROME WATERFALL spoken of in the ancient papyrus! Richard Niles wrote “Blues For D.K.” for acclaimed cellist Dennis Karmazyn, principal cellist for the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. This piece is far from a conventional blues, but finds its inspiration as much from contemporary classical music as from John Lee Hooker. The video is created from some of Niles’ favorite blues record covers. Clive Dunstall lays down a funky but subtle groove. Blues fo...

Dolph and Dolphy needed a holiday. It had been a tough year and the waters were getting colder. “What do you say we get our friends and go on a Carribean trip?” said Dolph with a flip of his tail. “Ooh, I’d love that, honey,” said Dolphy, “but don’t invite your flippin’ drunk friend Fred, he’s a bit of a bottlenose!” Dolph snorted. “Aw, that’s a load of blubber! Thanks for sharing this vital information on him. Btw, met you a couple of times Richard at 2 seminars in LA. You are so awesome in the way you carry the flame of the Arrangers and their craft. My dear departed friend Mark Wirtz (one of the best producers/arrangers/artists, in my view) once told me that McCartney had mentioned his "Excerpt From a Teenage Opera" as having inspired The Beatles to expand their outlook as to what was possible in pop music. But. Paul had mentioned it as Keith West's "Excerpt...", and not as his record. I told Mark that WE knew where the credit belonged as regards that 'inspiration', that Paul was talking about HIM, whether he got the mention or not. Mark and I talked nearly every day for about two years, as he was driving from Atlanta to Tampa for his standup comedy gigs. What a privilege! I miss him SO much.

I bought a 45, years ago, because Alan's name was on it: "Tonight" by The English Look (as The Look were named here in The States). It''s one of my desert island records - an upbeat, downright hilarious take on the Bernstein song from West Side Story. This interview is giving me so much to look forward to - You've made an old pop music freak very happy.

I came into a DJ copy of the first Babe Ruth album just before it was released up in Minneapolis. First listen made me a Shacklock fanatic. It doesn't surprise me at all to hear, just now, that he majored in Classical Guitar and Composition. Both are evident in his music. He could shred, sure, but ALWAYS with melody in mind. The sublime 'Amar Caballero' album (Babe Ruth's third release) is among the sweetest rock albums ever produced. Gorgeous! Whenever I see a poll of Greatest Rock Guitarists, I always add Alan. To my complete bafflement, I'm usually the only one in the comments to mention him. A shame, that he's so rarely recognized here in the US. This interview is a gift! I envy the interviewer.

I think Dave Weckl composes some of the most creative tom tom fills, I always hated Steve Gadds tom tom fills, they would just repeat over and over. Dave Weckl is a slave to the music and I don't think anyone will be able to compose as much as him on the drums just because Dave has sacrificed his life to being the greatest drummer ever. People will usually have a automatic reaction when asked who the best drummer is and say Buddy, but I think it is largely subjective. I think Dave has more creativity with his rhythmic variations and seems to be more vast in his ever expanding drumming rhythm variation. Buddy would just play one style but dave can play numerous styles of music. I always wondered what would Buddy have done had he ever just played a solo that had groove and was not limited to constant thrashing and speed. I think the only drummer that can do more than Dave is a electronic drum machine.

I wish there was a documentary about Carpenters STUDIO work, like 'Beach Boys classic albums Pet Sounds' but the documentary should cover ALL of Carpenters studio eras, their evolving techniques, arrangements, and epic chorale applications. A docuemnmmtary with a disclaimer at the beginning ( the audio of this film is in Dobly Atmos. We strongly encourage headphones or an Atmos sound system) All the multitracking --- with Atmos? GTFO , that would be badass. There's genuine psychedelic stuff throughout early Carpenters, I think Richard may have dropped LSD or just possibly he was simply heavily influenced by musicians who have. That first album is SO trippy. As a fan of hardcore punk, Led Zepplin, White Stripes, and the Beach Boys - I finally made the connection with Carpertners music this year and I experience it so intensely - mentally and physically. They're like Mozart or Bach....I hear masters of music and can't get enough.....All of it, chill-inducing. It's SO SOPHISTICATED musically. Both of them were Masters of the studio and there's no information on this stuff. Every book and documentary is formulaic and not musically intellectual - or they're about eating disorders. What about the MUSIC?? Carpenters have been screwed over, they deserve the Beach Boys' treatment to bring their awareness to more people like me.
