Excellent interview! Yes, I watched Part 1 as well and waited with enthusiasm for part 2. You both speak the truth and I agree...the biggest problem with today's younger generation is they want it FAST! They are sold a "bill of goods" that is very inaccurate, ie. Play onstage in 90 days, I can teach you to SHRED in 3 lessons, etc etc... WRONG! LOL...I wish they would stop saying those things. I was at MI in the 80's when Jeff was there. I have a MM in Jazz Studies from North Texas as of last May 2023...I am 59 years old. I learned the same way you guys learned. It's the way I teach my students...LEARN THE FUNDAMENTALS! Thanks for the interviews Richard! Best regards, Kurt

    Thanks awfully !
JB is a great singer too - Gothic 17, a cinematic masterpiece of music with no movie.

Nice !! Bass Mastery, first package or book? I worked through the first package and am into #2, scales with sharps and flats. How is it going for you? What Etude are you on? Good luck and keep at it !!

Read this passage last year by one Tobias Matthay, Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music , from 1913:
"Hence, also, you realize the folly of imagining that a Metronome can serve as a Time-teacher. You see, the pupil has to learn to play to a pulse-throb of his own making all the while; it is therefore of very little use indeed learning to pay obedience to an outside, machine-made Pulse-throb. And in any case, a Metronome is apt to kill the finer Time-sense[...]"
Interesting that he uses compound, hyphenated nouns to describe playing in time: Time-sense, Pulse-throb, Time-teacher, Time-throb and Imitative-sense.

Jeff Berlin clearly explaining why, after 3 semesters at Berklee, he has never had a teaching job in higher ed.

Yet if you read music and practice his Etudes, your playing improves. Weird !

thats definitely a part of a good practice routine, but there are other avenues of improvement for sure. @@fearnoevil65

I read what Jeff wrote on his own page about not being interested in college teaching and just not true. He was actively looking for a job in higher ed when he was jettisoned from players school. I heard it from magazine people that were helping him and the people at the schools, including berklee. Rewriting the past does not change it. !

You don’t need a metronome to work on subdivisions. That’s great if it helped but djembe is better in my opinion.
