Ken Wilber on the Difference Between Human and Artificial Intelligence
This is a small compilation of some of Ken Wilbers views on Artificial Intelligence expressed throughout the years. Given a paninteriorist assumption consciousness resides and coarises within the interiors of organic holons starting with the smallest atoms. Conscious creatures like humans got to enjoy their being and awareness as the result of millions of years of biological evolution. According to this view consciousness is in the cells and an emergent property of countless layers of organic tissues stacked on top and prehending each other. Computers and the Artificial Intelligence programs that operate on their chips lack this layered biological prehension. So whatever AI is gonna turn out to be it most likely will be alien from any other type of intelligence we find on planet earth.
All three segments are form Integrallife.com
Part one is from a presentation titled "The Future of Artificial Intelligence" from September 16, 2015
Part two is a conversation titled "Taking the Long View: Immortality and the Technological Singularity" from October 5, 2011
Part three is from a dialogue with Jim Garrison titled "The State of the World 2017: The Wake of Trump" from February 1, 2017
For a speculative conversation on the possible spiritual future of artificial intelligence you can listen to a dialogue between Kevin Kelly and Ken Wilber here:

Ken Wilber - Dominant Monads and Dominant Modes of Discourse
Переглядів 278Рік тому
How should we think about collective consciousness and experiences of selftranscendence within We-Spaces? One of the differences when contrasting the behavior of individuals to groups is that, other than in single organisms, there is no central point of agency within a group of people. There is no dominant monad (a concept borrowed from Leibniz and Whitehead). Unlike an individual holon that ca...

Ken Wilber on Involution and Evolution

Ken Wilber is sometimes identified as a neoplatonic philosopher. Part of this philosophy is a conception of cosmic forces and a spiritual view of nature. According to one interpretation of this worldview spirit is returning to itself as a drive of Eros that can also be seen as a force of self organisation. This doesn't mean that the forms that this drive creates are pregiven or created ex nihil...

    The first nation to abolish slavery was Haiti. If Ken doesn't consider Haiti at the time (1803) orange then he's wrong about the idea of that the abolishment of slavery only came online with Modern Rationalism, then it's clear that Ken suffers from neocolonial thinking. This another reason why every ethnic group should get their hands on this knowledge, not just white people.

    TLDR: Integrating our shadow is essential for personal growth, but it must be done with care to avoid negative consequences, and understanding and addressing our shadow material can lead to growth and healing. 1. 00:00 🔍 Integrating our shadow is crucial for personal growth, but it must be done with care to avoid negative consequences. 1.1 Shadow refers to the aspects of our awareness that we have disowned, repressed, or denied, which are important parts of our own psyche that we are not acknowledging. 1.2 Differentiation, disidentification, and integration are necessary for moving to a higher level of development, but if not done properly, it can lead to fixation, addiction, dissociation, or avoidance. 2. 04:03 🧠 Splitting off parts of our consciousness can lead to dysfunction, but understanding and integrating our shadows can lead to growth and healing. 2.1 Addictions and allergies are the two primary dysfunctions that can occur at different levels and states, such as food, sex, power, and love. 2.2 Splitting off important aspects of our consciousness can lead to a halt in overall development. 2.3 The talk discusses different categories of upper left psychological shadow material and their suggested treatments, including shadow retroflexion and introduction, as well as shadows associated with states of consciousness. 3. 08:08 📝 Retroflection, redirecting anger towards oneself, can lead to depression, but can be overcome through transactional analysis and introspection of internalized parent and child tapes. 3.1 The paper presented a comparison between the structural models of gestalt therapy and transactional analysis, highlighting the concepts of retroflexion and the p a c ego. 3.2 Retroflection occurs when anger is redirected towards oneself instead of the intended target. 3.3 Depression is retroflected anger and can be overcome by turning that anger outward and getting sad back into mad through transactional analysis and introspection of internalized parent and child tapes. 4. 12:07 🧑‍🏫 Gestalt therapy and transactional analysis use different techniques to address negative thought patterns. 4.1 Gestalt therapy uses a tripartite structure to address the over dog, underdog, and adult state, while transactional analysis uses pac scripts to interrupt negative self-talk. 5. 13:47 🧑‍⚕ Fritz Perls cured neurosis in 15 minutes by having patients describe their problems in "it" terms and using an empty chair technique to convert anxiety from third to first person. 5.1 Fritz Perls was a genius in working with neurosis and could cure any neurosis in 15 minutes by having the person describe their problems in "it" terms. 5.2 A therapeutic technique involves converting anxiety from third person to second person to first person through dialogue with an empty chair. 6. 16:46 🧠 The three-two-one process is a key part of psychotherapy and shadow work, helping individuals understand and address their shadow material at each stage of development. 6.1 The three-two-one process is a fundamental pathway of neurotic development that is intuitively used by psychotherapists and can be seen in various forms of therapy, including shadow work, which involves taking into account the stages of growing up development. 6.2 Shadow material can occur at each stage of development, providing a clear understanding of the type of shadow material available at each stage. 7. 20:27 🧠 Different levels of consciousness can be repressed, leading to denial and projection of qualities onto others, causing conflicts in culture wars. 7.1 There is a spectrum of development of different levels of consciousness that can be repressed, resulting in a variety of symptoms. 7.2 As different defense mechanisms emerge, individuals tend to deny and repress their own qualities and project them onto others, leading to conflicts in the culture wars. 8. 23:16 🧘‍♀ Practice empathy and shadow work to confront and integrate the parts of ourselves that we hate and stop projecting them onto others. 8.1 If something upsets you and drives you crazy, it's probably a projection of your own qualities. 8.2 Practice empathy by talking to an imaginary person in an empty chair to integrate their perspective into your own, even if you still disagree with it. 8.3 Shadow work is difficult but rewarding as it requires us to confront and accept the parts of ourselves that we hate and loathe. 8.4 Acknowledge and befriend your projections without being judgmental to avoid negative impacts on your mental health. 8.5 Shadow work is challenging but necessary to acknowledge and integrate our own hatred and stop projecting it onto others, and it can help reduce the influence of our shadows in the world.

    Yes that's pretty interesting. This also relates to the polarisation of hierarchy vs. egalitarian democracy. It's individual vs. collective rule. We have that dichotomy in all political systems and in two party systems, this seems to be the main line of conflict.

    I do think that AI intelligence may be fundamentally different to human intelligence but I find Ken's argument here bizarre. No quarks, atoms, molecules etc in AI computers? Then what exactly are they made of? And regarding AI not being able to pick things up: ua-cam.com/video/mWEd-IeFR5E/v-deo.html

    • @leondrago
      @leondrago 7 місяців тому

      He gave the context. He was saying that they did not evolve so they do not contain the integration of complexity. In a computer or AI system of computers and software, Its quarks did not arranged themselves then gave rise to atoms (emergence), atoms did not arranged themselves and then eventually gave rise to molecules (emergence again, the newly complexification of matter contains the previous in an integrated way. So on and so forth til the arrival of life, eventually humans. Thus, human intelligence is not just rational intelligence but it is an integration of all the complexification that came before it. Michael levin expands on some of this, he is not connected to wilber, Levin is on the vanguard of the intelligence of biological systems not just of the rational mind. Computers of course are made of quarks, atoms, molecules, but not in an evolved self regulating integrated way like with animals and thus are a different kind of intelligence, an alien sort of intelligence from the point of view of evolved organisms.

    • @multiphilification
      @multiphilification 7 місяців тому

      @@leondrago except it is not true that a computer does not contain the integration of complexity. a computer consists of layer after layer after layer of complexity, each layer building further complexity from the previous layer. there's even a parallels between how in humans, the layers become more abstract at the top of the holarchy (e.g. show up as developmental stages) and how in computers, the upper layers are more abstract in the sense that they are software rather than hardware. a computer really is quite a good example of a holarchy.

    • @leondrago
      @leondrago 7 місяців тому

      @@multiphilification no it does not it skips layers because it was made by humans thats the whole point he was explaining, and the current AI would just argue without real understanding like in the above paragraph

    • @multiphilification
      @multiphilification 7 місяців тому

      @@leondrago it is true to say that the holonic layers in a computer came about through human agency rather than by their own agency, but it is not true to say that a computer "skips layers" or say is not a holarchy and not at each level operating as an integration of the previous level. to clarify: i'm not trying to say that computers and humans are the exact same sort of thing, they very clearly aren't. i do not believe a computer has an interiority, for example. they have a 3rd person dimension but no 1st or 2nd person dimension. but we need to be very clear what the differences are and what they are not. i don't think ken is clear on that, and i'm not sure you are either. if you are not familiar with how computers are constructed i'd recommend studying electronic engineering and the constituent building blocks of computers, you'll learn how a computer as a holarchy has many, many layers and how each layer of the computer holarchy emerged sequentially in time, starting with the most fundamental and moving towards the most significant (another attribute they share with humans)

    Ken never grew up with an , Nor did he grow up in an area where the jobs went away. What happens to males when faced with a destroyed self-esteem, Depression and anxiety? Typically Alcoholism, Drug addiction, and increased sex drive focusing on weaker partners (i.e. children, prostitutes, and secretive "Down Low" same sex incidents... causing them to over compensate, and act more toxically macho. And those mothers who don't "fall" have to become "men" of the house and stressed out "Mothers" left with Disciplining and nurturing. When raising boys, of course she's most often "not perfect" because she doesn't "see" the world of men, just as men are most often unable to "see" how the world and genetics shape women (wombman.) Brilliant Ken falls into the same trap here that Jordan Peterson fell into.

    I've always found this problematic. I fundamentally agree with the Wilberian notion that, in my own words, there is no reasonable theory of why the big bang would create life, and why life would create intelligence, and why intelligence can attain enlightenment. I do believe that "random chance" can be an explanation for the mechanism, and I don't agree that something is "pushing" it. How could these cited "simulations" possibly make sense? Reality is a given. There is no alternative to using reality itself as the basis of a simulation. Thus, it would seem, whatever occurs in reality makes mathematical sense, and I'm not aware of any deviation from that, where the mathematics of probability prove false due to some unseen variable. Maybe that exists, it's being referenced here, but I'm not qualified to say it makes sense and I haven't found this information or seen it myself. In my eyes, it is just very odd that random chance would generate unforeseeable innovation and novelty that seems to have a directional vector towards awareness in the ultimate sense of the scale of all time. However, I don't get when Wilber talks about "Spirit throwing itself out". What does that mean? When does that happen? Who does that? It seems like jargon, seems like "Amber meme" mythology. I believe it is citing Sri Aurobindo, who taught spirituality a la yoga. But it is a poetic description, and I don't think it's appropriate to treat it as a technical description. Involution, as a concept, still makes no sense to me after watching this, and after reading all of Wilber's books. It just seems like a placeholder word to the observable teleology of the Universe, it would seem, to create greater self-awareness at an accelerating rate. I worry that using weird mysticism-based jargon might muddle the presentation of this practical observation.

    It's becoming clear that with all the brain and consciousness theories out there, the proof will be in the pudding. By this I mean, can any particular theory be used to create a human adult level conscious machine. My bet is on the late Gerald Edelman's Extended Theory of Neuronal Group Selection. The lead group in robotics based on this theory is the Neurorobotics Lab at UC at Irvine. Dr. Edelman distinguished between primary consciousness, which came first in evolution, and that humans share with other conscious animals, and higher order consciousness, which came to only humans with the acquisition of language. A machine with primary consciousness will probably have to come first. What I find special about the TNGS is the Darwin series of automata created at the Neurosciences Institute by Dr. Edelman and his colleagues in the 1990's and 2000's. These machines perform in the real world, not in a restricted simulated world, and display convincing physical behavior indicative of higher psychological functions necessary for consciousness, such as perceptual categorization, memory, and learning. They are based on realistic models of the parts of the biological brain that the theory claims subserve these functions. The extended TNGS allows for the emergence of consciousness based only on further evolutionary development of the brain areas responsible for these functions, in a parsimonious way. No other research I've encountered is anywhere near as convincing. I post because on almost every video and article about the brain and consciousness that I encounter, the attitude seems to be that we still know next to nothing about how the brain and consciousness work; that there's lots of data but no unifying theory. I believe the extended TNGS is that theory. My motivation is to keep that theory in front of the public. And obviously, I consider it the route to a truly conscious machine, primary and higher-order. My advice to people who want to create a conscious machine is to seriously ground themselves in the extended TNGS and the Darwin automata first, and proceed from there, by applying to Jeff Krichmar's lab at UC Irvine, possibly. Dr. Edelman's roadmap to a conscious machine is at arxiv.org/abs/2105.10461

Orthodox marxists were saying that communism can only prevail in the most developed countries long before the bolshevik revolution, and they are still saying it. Doesn't integral theory show that you have to go through the pluralistic stage (green stage in Spiral dynamics) in order to get "hold of" the now? Let's take Jesus for an example. He's jewish, but he was pretty pluralistic after getting enlightened. I mean if you see that everything is maya, how can you be rascist and start wars. Hm. But what about Heidegger. Heidegger saw through it, but he supported the Nazi regime in its beginnings. What about Richard Wagner? He's a musical genius, but also undoubtedly an idiot. After discussing with myself, I think, Ken is right on this one. Or at least, it depends on your personality and ability to reflect, in order to interpret in a more inclusive manner.
