Great work getting closer 👍
Ty Louis, next episode will be the bottom of the tunnel.
Great video Dave!! I’m so glad you could use that frame head. Excited to see your next video. Thanks for shoutout.
Ha! You seen how bad mine was. I really was soooo thankful you guys sent me that one. I’m happy to be hitting hard now. I really want to drive it to Slades. 🤞🤓
@ I have faith that you will get it done by then. I can’t wait to see the car in person. Also see you and buster again. 😁
@@KevinElliott1989It’ll be great to see you guys also. You can take our bug for a test drive. You played a part in it coming back. 👍🤓
Awesome video Dave!! I’m glad you have patience and skills for a project like this. I’m excited to see your car when it’s finished. Thanks for the shoutout!!
Hello Kevin, it’s coming out great. I love the feeling of getting closer with every project. Hay, at the end did you see white letters falling behind the two videos. The videos are blocking them. The say ty Kevin and April, I screwed up in placing them to close to the ending!
@ I seen it. I actually took a screenshot to show April. I always enjoy helping my VW family out. Keep up the good work with your project!!
That was fun to watch. I noticed that you have to same rusted out areas on the tunnel right under the Napoleon hat, near the bottom of the tunnel on both sides. You didn't patch that up so I'm assuming I don't need to worry about those rusted out areas either. I was going to remove part of the underside so I could patch those up but now I'm thinking I don't need to worry about that. What do you think?
I’m not a hundred percent sure where you mean. I have so much rust in that area. I still have a little work on each side little spots on the bottom. Left and right side. Also when I flip it over I’m taking off what’s left of the tunnel cover and repairing went thing I find in there. Being I’m that fat into it I’m going to change my fuel line and add a return line Incase down the line I change to fuel injection. 76 Viper green Romeo suggested that. Good suggestion.
I think I know where you mean and I don’t believe it’s a problem unless water or rodents can get in.
OMG! That is ugly! I'm so grateful my chassis isn't as far gone as yours!
Hello TrixedOut, ha! You think that’s ugly wait till I flip it the tunnel bottom is shot also. Lol!
Gorgeous!
Ty TrixedOut, I’m very happy with the progress. Ty
Lovely Dave. That’s probably straighter than most driving around nowadays, look how the rear horns were out🤔 Stick some adjustable front shocks on like Kerschers and with the camber nut it’ll be dialled in, but I’d say it’ll be fine without anyway👍🏼👍🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Yes Philp, I couldn’t be happier. Within the next two videos I’m going to reveal a ton of new stuff I got for the chassis. Can’t wait to start putting it together.
Nice job. 👍👍
Thanks Romeo, it’s coming out really nice. A few little things to go then I’ll be flipping to get at the bottom.
Hi Dave that did take some thinking as you say take lots of measurements and then hopefully you can't go wrong 😂😊 looking good
@@busterstravels1534 When you start working on the bottom of the tunnel. I would recommend replacing the metal fuel line and maybe adding another fuel line as a return fuel line for fuel injection setup for down the road.
Great idea, thanks buddy.
@@keithnutley4244I’m really happy with the results. Looks great. 👍
Wow!!!
Hal that’s what I said too Chris!
What gage sheet metal are you using for you patch repairs? Looks like some of your patches the metal is thinner maybe IDK, just curious. I guess you can use whatever gage you have but "they" said the german metal is better. Not a welder but isn't metal metal? How is it better than say a sheet you buy at Home depot? As long as the gauge is the same or not, does it really matter? I mean, it looks like you using whatever you have laying around which if fine I guess as long as the rust is gone and the weld is good, who cares right? Also, again I'm not a welder, but what are your settings on your welder for your sheet metal repairs, normally? Just like to know in case I decide to tackle a rust repair some day.
Ben I use 18 gauge sheet metal. You knows if German metal is better. Like you said metal is metal. I’m sure some metal is better than others but I believe guys that are rebuilding 100% German stuff. Same with American cars . Some modify and others like pure. Also I find it cheaper to buy a 4x8 sheet 18gauge at a metal store. Big box stores charge to much. I have recycled metal from shelves, metal cabinets. 👍🤓
Absolutely Genius. Have to admit though, made me a little nervous watching this but man how cool is that. I see you had another strap securing the body from flipping all the way over as well. Just genius.
My dad always said if there’s a will there’s a way. 👍🤓
Nice going Dave. I know who I’ll be calling if I need opening up 🤣 I’ve never changed a whole one before just patches so enjoying your progress. I’m sure you know but don’t throw the old one out without removing that front crupple zone panel, it should unbolt but may need heat👍🏼 Also the inspection plate for the tunnel.
Thanks again Philp, I will remember. I want to put a tow bar permanently on the front and it needs to bolt to the cripple zone panel. 👍🤓
I to have a 72 SB in the same color as well. I see a lot of them that are this color. L20a is the color code own mine. Bright Orange I think is the name. I wonder if there is any numbers on how many where painted that color. Although, mine has been repainted at least once in its life, who ever did it painted it the same color or something close to it but I don't think the name matches to well. I think its more of a blood orange. Dave what is your bugs color code? Yours looks like a different shade inside but darker on the outside.
My car has been painted a couple times. Not sure of the actual code. The other one 1973 my sons was orange, my 72 and my 1971 bus were all orange. My sons will be gulf blue, mine will be gm butternut yellow and my bus will be olive green and tan.
Hi Dave, I’ve been offline for 3 weeks due to someone burning through some cables a few miles away and they needed to close a main road to fix it. Apparently catching up on your channel was not a sufficient reason for them to work over Christmas and New Year 🤷🏼♂️ All up and running as of an hour ago so I have some catching up to do 🤣 The crap you got out of them horns should add at least 10mph to your top speed😂 Where does all that crap come from 🤷🏼♂️
Ha! I kinda think this chassis was pulled out of a lake somewhere. I’m enjoying the challenge. Have a great new year. 👍🤓
You were brave to chop that off ! You will figure it out, look FWD to the next episode.
Thanks Bud, yep I have a plan. I believe it will be a 3 parter.
Great job Dave !!!
Little bit at a time. 👍🤓
I had a recent viewer on my channel who is getting ready to do this job on a '71 and I recommended that he come check out your channel since I'm doing a '61 and while similar, it's not quite the same as a super beetle. Hopefully he finds his way over here and sees this video. Keep up the good work, you're cruising along nicely on these builds.
Thanks Cowboy, I love doing these projects. I’m self taught. Not a pro but I have a lot of experience. Thanks for sending him my way. I did a 69 standard beetle for a friend a few weeks ago. I did a video. That should be similar to your 61. Ok but thanks for your support. Wishing you a great New Year’s. 👍🤓
Wow, that going to be a big job.
Hay bud,it is pretty big. The hard part for me is getting started. Believe it or not I enjoy figuring these things out. In my working life I worked for Thompson consumer electronics. When something went down. I had to figure things out and get things moving again. Of course I worked with other guys and we would brainstorm and learn from each other. Even though this is a first time job for me, I’ll confident it will all fall together in the end. I consider you as my technical advisor. You have been a very big help to me in one way or another.
@busterstravels1534 I'm sure you will do a great job installing the frame head. I'll do my best to be your technical advisor. As always, I'm glad to help you out.
You are a brave man. Just cut it off and fix it. Can't wait for the next video. This video was to short, lol.
Thanks Ben, I agree the video did seem kinda short. I’ll work on that. I believe the next video will be cleaning all of the welds and mounting the Napoleons hat.
Is it possible to clean out the frame horns by just removing the bolt to the tranny mount? Cutting the horns in half blew my mine. They can't grow back, lol.
I never check though the horn bolts, ha! I like to go right to the root of the problem. Lol
Hi Dave we have faith in you 😂 keep going that is a big job but I think it was the best way to go😊
Keith, thanks for your support. Really going to feel great after this series is complete. I think after 3 or 4 parts. I really enjoy the metal work. Ty
Nicely done 👍
Thanks Bud, this is a first for me, but as usual I’ll get er done. I enjoy the challenge with these projects. Have a great night. 👍🤓
Hi Dave looking good bet that was a lot harder than you first thought but it's looking like you solved it 😊nice to see you back after Christmas
Hello Keith, thanks it’s nice to move ahead. Yes, these types of repairs come with a little anxiety. This frame is rough, stay tuned much more rust repair to go! Ty buddy.
How did you determine that the passenger side horn was low and the driver's side wasn't high? Also what do you use for flapper discs? Thanks for your videos. I'm enjoying all the metalwork.
Hello Peggy, when I bought the 72 sb I wanted to see if I could get it running. First thing I did was take the driver side plugs out. It was tight but just like any other bug, no problem taking them out. When I went to the passenger side the plugs were almost impossible to take out because the engine was setting lower and the shelf next to the engine was partially blocking the plug holes. I hope that answers your question. As far as the flapper discs, I use what I can get deals on. I’ve ordered different ones line. Harbor freight. About 3 weeks ago harbor had a clearance different grits were 4.99 each, reduced to 1.99 each. There was 33 of them and I bought them all. Surprisingly they are longer lasting than what I was using. Thank you for your questions and support. I appreciate the comments. Have a great new year!
Wow I can't believe the crap that was in that frame.
Ha! I agree! The tunnel bottom cover and frame head are shot also. I enjoy bringing things back but I came close to scraping this one. ( everything is fixable) well almost. 👍🤓
Good call on the "good" frame horn!
They looked like dirt burritos. Previous owners must of lived on a dirt road. Both ends of this chassis are very rough. 👍
Looks great David and I bet they're nice and strong good job💪👍
Oh yeah, when I do the bottoms I have a reinforcement plan just incase I adapt it to take a Chevy LS. Lol!
Nice job repairing those frame horns. They were in rough condition.
Yep, thanks buddy. I still have to repair bottoms. Lots of measurements and leveling. Ha! You think they were rough wait till you see the rest. lol!
Wow, just now watching this one Dave. I'm so glad you recovered, obviously by now you have, but I've watching your videos in the wrong order. Trying to catch up on them and I really enjoy them. You're inspiration and drive to continue is what this world needs. As always, thank you for making these videos and sharing. I will definitely wear my safety shield from now on.
Thanks Ben, yes it was a scary situation. I’m blessed to have recovered 100%. I love what I do and meeting fine people like myself. We forget safety at times but it is really important. Ty buddy stay safe.
Hi Dave grate to hear from you
Hello Buddy, I’m working on a video now. Can’t wait to get it posted. It’s been awhile with the holiday stuff. People are wondering if I’m ok. Yes I am and working towards my goals. I miss all you guys. 👍🤓
I like the orange skull shifter knob. I have an orange 72 SB as well with a chrome one skull. I like your better though. It would be cool to make the eyes glow red.
I thought about putting a led in it that would go on with the lights. That may happen in the final product. Skulls are cool. Thanks for watching. 💀
Hi Dave, great videos on the 72. I'm been trying to catch up on them and kind of going backwards. I was wondering if you still have the old dash that you cut out? Mine is in ruff shape around the radio whole and I'd like to but it back to original. Let me know if you do please sir. I'll be glad to purchase it from you.
Yes I still have it. Don’t remember how good but I believe it’s ok I’ll check tomorrow. Where are you located?
@@busterstravels1534 Okay thank you sir. I sent you an email with my location.
Happy New year to you and your family Dave. You know I’ll be here watching so looking forward to your uploads as always👍🏼🍻
Thanks Philip, as always great to hear from you. Ty
Thank you for this video. This looks like a really great spot to camp. I appreciate you showing the road in especially. I love camping in spots like that but I can't always take my 22ft travel trailer to those type of places. That site looks like it would be doable.
Thanks for the comment. Yes, it’s a great spot. Also there’s plenty of room for your trailer to maneuver around, getting in and it’s a big lot. Have a great New Year.
I got my start working on V-W’s I had to buy a special Allen wrench to replace a swing arm.
Luckily I had one that would work from my working days. 👍
Thanks for sharing . Good luck with the project!
Thank you very much for your comment. Wishing you the best new year. 👍🤓
Good job. I love your positive attitude and commitment. Nothing is ever easy but you never give up. I would consider hiring a mobile dustless blaster person to come and blast it with water and media next time. I consider doing this as a business when they first came out but never pulled the trigger. Probably cost $250 bucks for about 2 or 3 hours work, maybe less. Thank you for sharing your project.
TrixedOut just had hers done dustless. It was $500. Check out her channel, she’s building a 72sb, and learning as she goes. Very inspiring. Prices have gone through the roof. Powder coating also. I’m on a budget. I rather spend on parts. Oh I just realized you meant the body, TrixedOut did her chassis.
Happy New Year Dave!
You also Zimms, hope you have a great year!
Happy New Year! 🎆🥳 And good luck with your project! 👍
Ty hopefully we’ll meet a a show this year. Good luck with your project also. 👍🤓
Happy New Year Dave ! 🎉🎈
Back at you my friend! I hope you hit all your goals this year. The bus is really shaping up!
Happy New Year Dave looking forward to seeing you again!!
I feel the same buddy, after years of no beetles your videos and community relit the flame. I’m having a ball. Ty

@@busterstravels1534 If I could attend the show. I would.
I know bud!
Wow, thanks for sharing this, great job. What are you planning on putting back to replace the foam with? I've read some use pillows and others use plastic bags with foam inside. I have a 72 SB as well and it has a few spots in these same areas. Kinda makes me sick/nervous to cut on my car to remove the foam. I was thinking about trying the 3M panel bond instead of welding too.
Hello Ben, ty for watching and commenting. I’m not sure what I’m going to replace the foam with. I’d prefer to do nothing but we’ll see if it’s A problem then I figure something out. I know what you mean when ever you have cut into the body it’s scary. You just have t think it out very well and take your time. If you make a mistake you have to realize everything is fixable. Panel bond is good stuff. If you weld just remember to skip around and don’t get it to hot. Use water or air to cool down your spot weld. Have a great New Year’s and enjoy your project.
@@busterstravels1534 Hi. Thank you for your replay. The area in the engine bay where the foam blocks the air from entering, I wonder if you could just weld a patch there instead of foam or pillows. I just have cheapo HF welder and I don't like the way it welds, not very clean that is. What welder do you have? I was thinking of getting a better one that uses gas. I really don't know what to get or where you can by gas either. I've only used the HF a few times. Thought maybe the 3M bond might be another option as well.
To block the air I think we can find some material that is moisture resistant that would work. I have an Eastwood automotive 135 mig welder. I have it for many years and love it. Plus the company has excellent customer service. I use 75/25 gas. It welds cleaner.
Looking awesome! I wish they sold those original style sunroofs as a kit. Would love to install one, but hate the idea of chopping up a usable bug body.
I bought the roof out of a totaled bug.it was scary putting it in , I was afraid of messing up. Measuring multiple times and it wasn’t to bad. I agree totally, someone should sell an original unit it would sell. Thanks for watching, nice chatting. Have a great New Year!
@@busterstravels1534 the canvas sunroofs look nice, but I'd install a hand crank original style aftermarket kit any day! Hope your Christmas and holiday season has treated you well and wishing you best for the New Year! Thanks for the awesome videos and effort you put into your work for us all to see!
Hello again basal, I like the canvas roofs also (rag tops). After I completed my 72 and paint my sons 73, I have a bus to start a 1971. I plan on putting a rag top on that. Ty for the nice comments and support for the channel. I hope to evolve and do better as time goes by. Ty
Dave, my air vents over the engine compartment have a lot of dust etc painted in from a previous restoration. Any idea how I can get it out? I'm thinking about getting a cheap media blaster.
This is a very difficult area to get at. Hand held sandblasting works but is messy. You can spray paint remover in there. Harbor freight sells a very thin brass brush that fits in the thin grill openings. It’s like a buck and a half. Works well. I use it in one of my last videos about priming the body. Another way is paint remover and a presser washer. Good luck and Happy New Year !
@davidjwesson I saw a video hack where you take a cable and crimp a 6-8" metal sheath on it (copper tube works well) with about an inch of cable sticking out. Flare that cable ends sticking out, and put the other end in the chuck on a drill, and now you have an extended length wire brush drill attachment. I bet something like that would work really good for getting inside those vents and cleaning up the insides.
I would have organized all the brake/axle/ swing arm hardware to keep track of how it goes back together. It helps when assembly time comes. Anyway you still have the 73 super. If you need help, with assembly problems.
I’m pretty sure I won’t have a problem but I do have the 73, plus UA-cam. Romeo have a great New Year’s! Ttyl buddy.
@@busterstravels1534 Happy New year's to you too. If you need diagrams, let me know.
I had a lot of fun doing this part of the project! Getting all that crusty old stuff off is so satisfying! Great video, Dave.
Ty TrixedOut, I too am enjoying getting away from the welding on the body. Change of pace is nice. I have a lot of repairs to do on the chassis. It will be nice to complete the chassis. Have a great New Year. 👍🤓
