So similar
‘A’ sounded like the Black Beauty - it has a ‘tang’ I recognise despite both drums being tuned the same. On the other hand, ‘B’ was nice and metallic but lacked that ‘tang’ - of course some drummers like the ‘tang’ and some don’t. I personally thought both drums sound fantastic. I have one Gretsch bell brass snare and I love it. I also love the Ludwig Black Beauty although mine is tuned very differently to the one in this video. Fantastic video, great narrative - and my goodness, your drumming is phenomenal 🎉 👏🏽 🥁
Thank you, very much for taking the time to review my Black Beauty and my Gretsch Brooklyn snares. In fact, my friend, I personally believe that, tuned correctly, with the right heads to suit that drum, the right snares, a good set of ears and time, you could tune most any “decent” snare drum to sound pretty great. If ever you have a question about any of the mechanics of making a drum, any drum, sound great…feel free to come back to me. Always happy to help a brother drummer. Remember, keep practicing… HD
impressive collection!!
Thank you, very much, for your kind comment. I’ve been an endorsed player for over 35 years. Now, with Canopus. Their drums are wonderful. Currently, there are somewhere over 365 snare drums. I sincerely hope you enjoy the site. Cheers, HD
Roger That !!!!!
Does it hold a 12 inch snare?
I don’t use a 12” snare. So I can’t say. Sorry.
B sounds much more articulate when you are performing drum rolls.
YoubTunedcthevYamaha best. The Ludwig had the most overtones and ringing
Nice review. Four years later and still loving this great snare drum. Thanks Herb.
great idea, but could have used that same blind demo with a kick, hat and snare doing a simple groove. I am a snare drummer from way back, but the majority of playing, and decision making for that matter, is how it plays backbeats with hoop and center of drum. THank you
I haven't watched the video yet, but what I've learned about drum sounds is that they are mostly the result of setup (heads, snare wires etc.) , tuning and how the player strikes the instrument. The shell matters but less so.
Hi Herb, thanks for your review. I wonder if the bag also fits a pedal and a throne?
In fact, now when I do not have someone to handle everything, I can get THREE floor stands, the snare stand, the high hat and some other things. I use a rather large seat so that will not fit. When I used a simple bass pedal, it fit in the bag with all else. Now, I’m using the DW machined pedal, which is rather bulky. It’s all so easy. I’ve stopped using all of my large bags with wheels in favor of this one. Good luck.
By the way…thanks for coming on board!
It sounds like neither drum is tuned all that well.
Just picked up a mid to late 60s Dyna sonic near Mint Condition and I purchased a DW true sonic both drums side to side tuned exactly the same (with drum meter ) with the same new heads. I find a DW has a little more sustain or brightness if I use a gel on top of both drums there’s not too much difference. The reason I picked up the DW was I use drums on gigs every week and I would not take a vintage Rogers out. I enjoy your videos.
Thank you for your comments. In fact, although I am an endorsed player, I often use one of my Dynasonic snare drums for local work and private jam sessions. While the DW is an excellent drum, it still typifies the DW experience. That being…weight. Try hey are the heaviest drums I’ve found and when I have to carry myself, they take a bit more effort. So, I opt for a Dynasonic. Your observations are “spot on”. Thanks again!!
Can’t really tell the difference between the new maple and steel, but there was a big difference between Mastercraft superstar, and steel drum back in the 80s. Tama doesn’t make drums way used to😢 they look beautiful and expensive, but I’m after sound😮
I owned all of the snares you mentioned and prefer the starphonics. Old isn't always better.
DW has a talent to copy. That's it. Good thinks he has invented the wheel new. Can't take him serious as he couldn't tell me whta note a shell has with all it's hardware, head and holder. BS.
The Rogers has more crack than pop and ring in your demo, so I attribute that to the essential ingredient, dampening. Out of the box, the Rogers has flexibility and control. The DW perhaps meets that challenge in a different way, using the bridge for snare mounting and tuning, and providing the position switch allows for rapid (live) switching that the Rogers doesn’t possess. In making that difference, omitting the intrusive damper, subject to wear and tear, it allows the shell to move more air, and for some that’s their preferred dynamic parameter. Great demo, I’m not in the market to buy either, and seeing the what and how of these mighty instruments is something I’ll reflect on when setting up my snares.
Great comparison on these two drums, I didn't know anything about the DW, but I do have the 14x6.5 wood Dyna-sonic. The one argument you made against the DW about not having an internal tone control would likely be considered a mute point by most of us, as practically everyone uses moongels, even small pieces of them to accomplish the same effect as internal tone control. I would have liked to have heard you add close mics as well as having the room mics for a better understanding of the whole the drums really sounds. Or perhaps even an overhead mic directly above your head to get a truer evaluation of the drum sounds. Nice job on the demo!
Love the Ludwig Carl Palmer..
If you tune those drums the way I play them ( Louie Bellson tight ) The DW chokes a bit....The Dynasonic sounds better at high tensioning...
Buddy Rich,Louie Bellson, and Roy Burns Rogers Dynasonics were specially made for them with no internal muffler.
Rogers Dyna-Sonic all the way. I played several, ludwig, pearl, but fell in love with the Rogers are never looked back.
Not the best Spot to test the specific nuances of a snare when the room is full of other snaredrums and buzzing strains in the room 😂😂😂
Truth is, nobody can truly tell and that's the very well made point (we only have his word for it that he is actually playing different models - that would be really funny!) Bigger point is that no audience can tell either. The Luddy has value if it inspires us to play - most of us love to play something wonderful. I own the exact same Brooklyn snare because when I went to try out all the pro steel snares, it sounded as good as all the others, but was the cheapest. There was a gorgeous Copperphonic in the store that had unbelievable sensitivity and feel, but was nearly 4 times the price! Needless to say, every time I get my Brooklyn out, the performance, style and value makes me personally feel a little smug 😏
Good fun, and I did guess correctly (although perhaps I was lucky). I made a similar video a while ago. ua-cam.com/video/l8IixDzcJTc/v-deo.htmlsi=b1huzPLD3nBmfyff
Oh my, that DW has a beautiful rim shot tonality. Overall I would pick the DW as the Roger’s sounds a bit to much snare wire for me. I have owned two 5” CoB Dynasonics, I sold both of them. Currently using a DW TrueSonic CoB.
Coming to this one late, but I thought for sure A was the Black Beauty. The clue was the resonance. Double flanged 302 hoops on the Brooklyn are heavier than triple flanged hoops that come stock on a Black Beauty. You can tell based on that. The way to really mess with people is to put die cast on the Black Beauty. Thanks for the fun videos.
A = black beauty/ B = Brooklyn.... They're both good, but I like the sound of the Brooklyn rim better, cheers.
I give the nod to the Dynasonic. Best sound overall. But the DW is a worthy competitor. I give the Dyna a 9/10. The DW gets a 7/10. (I have never given a 10/10) lol
B - BLACK BEAUTY
Love the maple. The nickel over brass is amazing.
BOTH NICE...😊
They were close, but the Ludwig had better tones. Thanks
I use several accessories which I attach to the cymbal stands with Tama multi clamps. Do you think the clamps will crush the aluminum tubing? Do you think the cymbal stand is stable enough to hold a closed hi-hat on the side? Also, my heaviest hardware item is the tom mount which goes into the bass drum. Do they make anything like that out of aluminum? Thanks!
Hello Herb. Based on your demos I think I would prefer these to the Evos - they seem to have a warmer sound but still powerful - although they're not quite succeeding in stealing my attention away from the Dark Energies which I suspect I may ultimately opt for. I've only recently stumbled across your channel but I enjoy your gear demos - they have been very helpful in this matter as I'm in the process of switching to some other crash models - so far, Paiste Dark Energy are my first option (although pretty high on the price point.) All the best.
I don't dislike them (the 17-inch is the one I would go for if I was to pick one of them based on this demo), but I'm definitely leaning more towards the Paiste Dark Energy cymbals which seem to hit closer to the mark for me. . Nice demo at any rate.
Great demo! The first two rides are the ones I liked the sound of the best. The Constantinople didn't do it for me. Thanks for sharing.
Great demo! I have been interested in the Dark Energy line for some time. I'm thinking these might be a good option for playing in a soft-to-medium rock setting in small pubs - do you think they would be suited to that type of application or would you say they are too dark for that? (I like fairly dark cymbal sounds but I'm predominantly a rock player so I'm cautious of the set being too dark or too low down on the volume threshold and projection power for the louder passages.) Based on this and other audio demos, my favourite aspect of this Paiste series are the crashes - the 16-inch sounds good but I lean more towards the upper size crashes. The ride also sounds pretty well balanced, although I'm less convinced by the hats and splash. I may have to take a gamble on one of the crashes as there's nowhere I can go to in person which has them to try out on display. But this demo was useful - great playing as well!
Just a little of that brassy dry ring is main difference I could hear
They both sound great, but I think A is the Ludwig.
I M LIKING THESE HI HATS MORE THAN MY PAISTE SIGNATURE dark crisp hats
I don't think I have tried these hats in person but I noticed they have a good warm tone from how it sounds here. I've been considering a Signature Dark Energy set for some time now - based on the various demos I really like the crashes from that series, although I'm not entirely convinced by the hats. My current hats are Zildjian A New Beats (15") which are great and I'll probably continue with them once I've changed crashes, though they'll likely be brighter in contrast. How do you find the Signature Crisp hats?
@jackspencer907 Sigs are great live my HHX complex are outstanding live and really shine recording .Sabians really nailed it this time I gotta say .
DW FOR SURE
Yes Herb I'm with you! I have to have that internal muffler control that the Rogers drum has.
Nice try, but this is not a sonically valid comparison. The reason being: you put a Remo fiberskyn drum head on the Rogers drum which will make the drum sound less bright & crisp, while the DW drum appears to have a standard Evans drum head on the top side which will make it sound brighter. But the fools at DW failed to engineer their drum to include an adjustable internal muffler control like the Rogers Dynasonic has. The company is probably too cheap to include that feature. I'll stick with the Rogers model over the DW.
B is very slight higher tuned. Other than that it sounds the same. Except for the rimshot! There is a difference. Maybe because you didn´t get the right spot on B, but I liked the rimshot sound more on A.
Im sorry everytimes i hear DW, reminds me of Arthur. Im looking at Rogers Covington, bit pricey.. but hey why not.
I dunno how he managed to make the best cymbals in the world sound like complete 🐕💩... But he did it 😮
I just don’t get why internal mufflers have become a thing of the past. The Ian Paice model has one and is always tempting me to buy it because of it. My first kit was a Rogers. Wish I would have realized the importance of that snare bridge back in the 80s.
Prefer the Rogers. Just sounds less scooped than the DW
Pretty sure B is the Gretsch.
I'm a a Rogers Dyna fan also. Mine is fifty years old and can hold its own against all the pricey boutique snares. Having stated that, while not a DW fan, their snares drums are nice. The difference for my ears is the DW seems to emphasise the sound of the snares, while the Dyna let's the shell sound come through. With you on the internal tone control as well.
