Thank you Cory. In fact, I use the hammered brass more often than I do the Black Beauty. They are both great drums but I seem to get a better response from the brass. Cheers.
dude cool video thanks!, i have the hand hammered brass, bought in '95, to me the epitome of a metal snare drum, mine is an older one with the imperial lugs
It is a great drum. I prefer a dry, tight sound so I use a Remo Powerstroke P3 Fiberskyn for the top head. The way I tune this drum, there is no reverb. Just a solid flat tight powerful response. It’s almost like having an internal muffler attached. Putting everything together, I end up with a killer snare drum for all purposes. Enjoy the holiday weekend!! HD
Hi Herb . What top head do you recommend for a 16 floor tom ludwig classic maple? Now im using an emperor coated but im not convinced with the feel and sound with that head. Any suggestions?
Head choice has to do with personal preferences and the room you're in. The question is if YOU like the head you're using. No one can answer that question for you.
I think they are both have a great sound. I have the hammers brass snare and I love it. I would love to have a black beauty as well. I don’t think I could choose between them but one might be better for different applications.
Jergen Teslow In fact, you are right. They are both great snare drums but with a Remo Renaissance Powerstroke 3 top head relatively tight and the snare side tight, the hammered brass is virtually unmatched for sound. Try it!
@@HerbWarrenDrums Your demo's are always appreciated, Herb. If you still plan on doing the aluminum snare shoot-out, please include the Tama Starphonic in the mix.
From what I hear, BB got a fuller sound and more low shot. It's more versatile and I prefere it. HB is dryer and metallic, so I think it's especially good for funky stuff.
I played a black beauty super sensitive for almost 20 years, so I lean towards that. I now have a 1981 hammered bronze super sensitive that sounds just as nice... it's a hard decision to make when you have 2 beautiful instruments!
Jeff, That hammered shell snare is just gorgeous. The controlled sound head makes it pop beyond my greatest expectations. I do like the BB but the hammered chrome is “perfect”. Thanks again, for your, always, uplifting comments.
I love the Black Beauty but until you went to the hammered brass was the best, but you went back to the BB, that was the best, then you played the HB that's better one, no stop going back and forth. That's why I have a 14x6.5 LM, a 14x5 hammered chrome over brass and a 14x5 LM, all 10 lug, best of both worlds.
As I had mentioned, Jeff, these are both great snare drums. I guess it’s a matter of appearance and response to the head you are using. I’ve recently switched to the Remo Powerstroke 3 Fiberskyn for all of my snare drums. The sound, response and ease of playing is, for me, second to none. Cheers, Herb W.
I can’t choose! I love the cross stick sound on the black beauty. I agree, the hammered brass sounds a bit more metallic. I think if you had a fyberskin head on there it’d be tamed a bit. They sound like siblings
Krandle Tie Again, very astute observations. I tried several different heads on the hammered brass and found the absolute “killer” sound came from a Remo Controlled Sound. Sharp, strong and no after ring. The BB, however, sounds best with a Remo Powerstroke Three Fiberskyn 1G head. It’s strong, very clean and extremely versatile. This head on the BB brings out the brush swish better than others I tried. Cheers.
Nice job. In my opinion should be done with the same heads this way would be a fair comparission especially when they're different heads skin .
Hey Herb. I know you posted this a while ago but I love that hammered brass snare

Looking for an old Blackbeauty 1970-1990's

dude i watched your video because i was looking for the comparison you made, i want a new snare am thinking pork pie patina but now, no
Great comparison, I was looking for a hammered black beauty vs hammered brass video but I can definitely hear the tone difference.

Herb Warren I will
I would prefer the hammered bronze. Sonically, and visually it just SPEEKS to me over the black beauty.
David Suprenant
Great choice. Mine, as well.
Herb Warren hey Herb, so is it a brass or a bronze snare drum. Thanks very much
Hammered for me, every time, visually and aurally. I would just bring down the tuning a bit. Nice demo again, good sir.
Thank you for your kind comment. It IS a beautiful instrument!

Absolutely! Thank you!
I have a 402 COA. I LOVE the sound! I’ve always wanted a brass snare. I prefer the BB over the HB. I think it’s the prestige that comes with the name.

I like the brass snare better. Your chops are tight!
