Holbein has such a different character to it, while other colors give the character of nature, earth and the „known“ . but just slight green to it and it gives the feeling of „unknown“ something between man and world, as you perfectly described „old buildings, rusted locks etc. seeing such visual and stark differences in colors I wish i had the space and money to own every Brands and every color, but till then thanks to amazing artists 😊like you who can show us the beauty of watercolor.

Hi Kathy, Based on you being skilled at working in layers, have you ever considered painting with Egg Tempera? I was taught by Flavia Zortea, a professor at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, who had us build up 7 - 10 layers using egg yoke as medium - then use a technique I have never seen demonstrated anywhere - REMOVE layers using egg white. Each layer would dissolve one at a time, and you could drill down through 3 - 7 layers to expose vibrant lighter underpainting colors from beneath your darker top layers. It created a hard to describe shimmering effect. If you like watercolors you may love Egg Tempera! See Andrew Wyeth’s ‘Christina’s World’

I'm not too quick on the uptake, but watching someone layer watercolors and hearing about which colors are being used does not necessarily translate, in my opinion, into explaining HOW to layer watercolors. It's a lovely video. I was expecting something a little different, based on the title. But, like I said, I'm not too quick on the uptake!

This video on layering is by far the most intricate I've seen. So don't worry about your uptake ! 😉 This one is super classy, but there's lots of simpler ones if you're interested. Some negative painting tutorials have great layering techniques too.

Your painting style reminds me of when I get a flash of memory of some happy time I had almost forgotten about, where the details are a little undefined here and there, but the feeling comes back to me with a big burst of emotion. The way you layer and add blooms and switch it up between opaque and translucent and have hints of dry brush texture -- it's very evocative and effective. I also wanted to mention that the New Gamboge + Perylene Red you started with is such a delicious color of orange.

I liked it a lot till… you used the white/grey gouache. I’d rather had you see lifting these spots to make them lighter and thus giving more depth and life to the painting. In my opinion using gouache is almost a no go with water colour.

Honestly, just after the Intro I think you could have said, "So which is better? The answer is: neither," and instead moved onto some of the cheaper but decent quality cotton options. From personal experience, I nearly quite watercolor because I had no idea there were different materials used in making the paper. Full disclosure, Strathmore 300 was recommended to me because I was a "beginner". No matter what I did, I struggled to achieve certain effects, couldn't control others, and generally felt as thought I wasn't improving. Fast forward, I bought a pad of cotton paper and the difference was immediately noticeable. If I could redo anything during my art journey, it would be to go back and start with cotton paper from the start. That and perhaps revisit the individual who suggested Strathmore 300...

I was wondering the same thing. I've only bought one xl canson years ago from michaels but it had me wanting to quit watercolor before I really even started. Turned out later I learned part of the problem was bad sizing as it just skipped right over those areas without taking the paint but part was it just didn't perform well for me. 😂 Love the beautiful bird and every video you make is always beautifully done and a joy to watch.

Not everyone has the budget for high end everything! Some artists have to make choices. I think in her video on paper she talks about what she likes in a paper. I, for one, actually like the blooms and unpredictable things watercolor does when you play. What fun is art otherwise?
