Hey everyone! Today I'm finishing up an old watercolor painting of wolves that I started about a year and a half ago, placed aside for a "small" break, and then completely forgot about. And well, you know what they say. The most satisfying painting is the painting that's been rolling around in a drawer gathering dust and silverfish and bad dreams. I'm using a limited palette of M.Graham paints:...

    In my very first watercolor class, the first thing our teacher did was tell us the importance of using properly sized cotton paper, all while teaching us how to break down our full imperial sheets of 300 gsm #140 Arches into the sizes we'd be using all week. As a total beginner I had absolutely no idea how valuable this lesson was, but I've been using Arches (THANK YOU FOR PRONOUNCING ARCHES PROPERLY!!!!) and Baohong cotton cold press ever since, for every dumb beginner exercise I do. I have a few cellulose papers and sketchbooks, and they make even swatching ugly and frustrating. I mostly use them for ink drawing practice. Watercolor needs to be my joy. There is no joy for me in struggling with icky cellulose paper with crummy or no sizing. When I can't afford Arches, I use Baohong, and I love it.

    I choose watercolor because I adore blooms, broccoli, cauliflower, runs, granulation, flocculation, basically tiny, endless texture!!! That's what makes watercolor paintings interesting to me, and what draws me into them.

    My problem is that when I paint too much and the paper gets too wet it starts to shred. Maybe I need to be more patient between layers? Work on something else for a while.

    oh, you are using XL... those are awful 😅 they are beginner, as in very beginner grade that gives a false idea of student grade. as I got to study watercolor in an art academy, my teacher advised me not to use XL unless I want wet on dry technique but I still wouldn't get even paint on wide areas and wet on wet is just no. the colors start moving around and bleed easily as you keep adding layers, it's awful. now as for strathmore, it's better, but more expensive than it should. but if I had to advise what beginners should by for watercolor, I'd say hahnemuhle harmony cold pressed or rough texture. even baohong on aliexpress is better if you're on a budget. I have both and was disappointed when I tried using watercolor on them again after perfecting my skills, so now I keep them for gouache only, since gouache works on pretty much any thick paper.

    I don't think the white/gray was needed, that said it was a great picture and has given me an idea of where I could go. I tend to paint trying to get a realistic rendering but I can see it's not necessarily needed. Thank you. I need to loosen up.😁🎨🖌️

    So is it worth it if you want the best all around paper to get arches?

    • @carlaeskelsen
      @carlaeskelsen 27 днів тому

      Yes, yes, yes! As a beginner I learn better from properly sized cotton paper. You can save some money by trying Baohong Academy 100% cotton (or Meeden, same paper) It's really nice. Also, you save a lot of money if you buy a full sheet and break it down, which is fun and easy.

    • @markquiles5057
      @markquiles5057 20 днів тому

      @ thank you! 🙏 it’s better to use Arches for me then.. I’d rather the paper not be a hindrance when it comes to working. I did the same thing many years ago with buying an Iwata airbrush and never looked back or had the problems others had by using inferior equipment. I like your mentioning of the sizing because I read later that it’s very important do thank you for the solid advice! Saved me time and frustration and money! 💰 I even got a few Escoda reserva red kolinsky brushes because they retain more water and give me excellent movement and quality! 👍
