Why I Obsess Over Colors

  • Colors may not be the end-all-be-all of all when it comes to art, but they still play a pivotal role in its overall construction. Using watercolor, I explore a palette that's had me gripped over the past year, get way too emotional over the color magenta, muse about fictional people, stories, and impossibly real mushrooms and how they drive deep pillars into the foundation of my creativity.

Without a doubt you are my most addicted UA-cam channel. You should consider a career in writing or I can imagine your voice narrating audio books. Problem is it is so relaxing to listen to I often fall asleep to it

I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts on color and how it inspires and entrances you. I also love finding inspiring color palettes out in the world and then exploring them through painting. Thanks for sharing your musings with us.

I could not agree more about writing colors down….when I moved into Western WC..after using ink and just a handful of traditional Chinese chips, for about 9yrs and I was overwhelmed by the massive menu of pigments and paints. I still am. I’ve amassed a collection of single-pigment only paints, in just a few years..but I tend to stick with a limited palette for each painting. One of my tutors insisted I loosen up and let loose for WC month..what a mess I made! 😂. Beautiful, but it barely even resembles the field of flowers it was meant to be. My best friend looked at it and remarked how proud she was that I’ve branched into “abstracts”. 😂🤷🏼‍♀️
Anyways, most of my first western-style paintings, including some I haven’t finished…I didn’t write the colors down and don’t remember. NOW? I have a notebook filled with the colors I use, mixes I make..
AND this evening, when my bestie gets here for our “old American Hippie slumber party” (her dear husbands description 😂); Liz and I are going to “play” Mad Scientists, and mull some of our own mixes from pigments we’ve gotten! Liz even got us lab coats! Some of the pigments are “toxic”, (PB33 & my Gamboge), others not…just hope there’s no reason for EMS to come find 2 old ladies in PPE’s playing with color. 🤷🏼‍♀️😂
This video gave me a GREAT idea though…SHROOMS! AND hummingbirds..my cool gray I specifically want to make with PR233 started by me trying to find that perfect cool gray for the fluttering wings of the hummingbirds that seem to show up whenever our friends or my daughter’s and I are remembering my brilliant late Son. My Son spent the 14yrs of his adult life traveling the world, (including China), usually with his friends, installing solar systems in impoverished communities without dependable electricity. His legacy was bringing people from different cultures together and educating people about different cultures, practices, arts and his favorite, FOOD! 😂🥰
    I’d better go get busy

i'm really glad i found your channel a few months ago! your videos are so artfully filmed and poetic; it's wonderful to hear someone else echo my own thoughts about traditional art, colors, brush work...all the things that make it meditative and a bit sacred. thank you for everything you do!

I'm seeing this late, but thank you so much! It's scary at times (well, most times) to share thoughts about art that I'm worried are too intense or vulnerable or self-indulgent, so it's always, always gratifying to meet others who feel the same way. ❤

    The sponsorship piece 👎

There wasn’t a sponsorship in this video. Why spend the time to leave a negative comment without also highlighting anything positive? This video is put together beautifully and you can’t find the time to say one nice thing?
