Aha, so you are old enough to know this music first hand! It's important to know I think. These 2 albums mean alot to me because I was a massive Elton fan as a tween in the early 70s. Honky Chateau also wins it for me (9.0), it's very cohesive and thematic while Don't Shoot Me (7.0) was more of a random collection. Blues for Baby and Me is one I didn't care for too much when young, but now it slays. Many folky types have praised Elton's earlier albums (especially Madman Across the Water) as his best (I think they love the twangy Americana) but for me, Honky Chateau achieved that vibe better while being more to the point and more consistent.
Presence was Jimmy Page's heroin album, the band wasn't happy at the time and it largely became a Page hard rock guitar album. It sounds like a middling Rolling Stones record to me now. No shame in digging it but along with Coda, it's a level below for me.
Good end result! I bought both albums shortly after their releases and always liked I'm the Man better. Songs aside, I think it's better recorded/produced/engineered, it sounds better. Amateur Hour has aged very well for me, I can hear it any time, any decade. I think Joe and the band are also more confident and have more conviction on I'm the Man. 9.5 vs 7.5 for me.
Joe Jackson vs Elvis Costello would have been better. They've always been considered together, two angry young men playing snappy, catchy, smart early new wave. Look Sharp vs My Aim is True or better yet, I'm the Man vs This Year's Model. Not sure who pairs well with The Police, they were pretty unique.
In your opinion
I like Controversy better as well reminds of 1999, and I like and I like the instrumentation and vocals more especially for the five songs you chose winning the song by song competition.
Thanks for the vid, Paul and Happy New Year to you and your channel.. JJ all the way for me. You forgot (or just neglected) to mention one big thing that the albums have in common. They were both on the A&M label! A&M went big on New Wave also distributing the IRS label.
Yeah, I went with the broad stroke comment "these albums have a lot in common" and left it at that. But yes, they are both on A&M
Let There be Rock is definitely their best album, but I totally understand how you feel about Powerage.
As much as I love The Police and this album, it is no contest for me. The only one that even came close was the battle between your two number ones, and even then, I think JJ takes it. But hey, Look Sharp is one of my all-time favorite albums, so stacking it up against just about anything is simply unfair.
Yeah, as I wrote to another commenter, I'm more of a JJ fan but the Police record is so good that it stood up to Look Sharp for me.
I always wanted those shoes!!
Hi Paul! What is that type of hat called? I have always wanted one. Great video.
Thanks! This is called an "apple jack" or a "news boy" hat. If you google those terms you'll get a few variations, but basically that's the style.
Sterling work.
Awesome pairing such a huge fan of both artists and the police for me just have that special place in my heart how many bands have 5 awesome albums in a row and ended on top of the world and what they could've done if they stayed together
Love this series. So Lonely is a top yen song for me. Police is more my Jam. Love this series,
Thanks!
I agree with you if i had to choose a winner would be the police but very close
I'm more of a Joe Jackson fan so I expected that one to win, but the Police album is so great that it held its own.
Here's my Ranking! 13: Yellow Submarine 12: With the Beatles 11: Beatles for Sale 10: Please Please me 9: Let it be 8: Hard day's night 7: Help 6: Revolver 5: Rubber Soul 4: Magical Mystery Tour 3: Abbey Road. 2: Sgt Pepper 1: The White album 🎉🎉🎉
You guys are amazing 😍😍. Great video, if I disagree with a little bit. By the way Paul, I see why you put Revolver at number 1. That has grown on me the most over the years as a 23 year old! Even if it's not my number 1. Still a top 5 for me though
Thank you! The Beatles catalog is probably the hardest to rank because all the albums are so different, but it's fun to try.
You should hear Deep Down a couple of times... oh my god that song... that groove... 🤯🤯🤯🤯
Pretty much my ranking as well, although I'd have Easy Action at 5 instead of 4, and Pretties For You at 4 instead of 5. I go back and forth with Love it to Death and Killer though. They're both just so damn good!
im sorry i could tolerate u putting mccartney 3 last but my one opinion on that is he is 80+ what do you expect with his voice man be honest here also the remixes with the other artists are great renditions flowers in the dirt AND OFF THE GROUND HECK NO i had to pause and pray for my watching of your list haha but im glad u said its ur opinion and everyone has them just like a-Holes u know the saying lol! i still dig ur video and love ur collection <3 im happy with ur back to the egg and flaming pie and driving rain placement tho! those are some underrated gems
Just got into that Keith Jarrett album. It's awesome. Good call on that Tom Waits album too. I need to check out that Basie album too. I have never heard of it. Thank you
Well awwright...Happy New Year everyone in the AISB community. Let's hope 2025 can make things better for us (maybe?) But Live Albums Of 1975...50 years ago. I can say this is year was the very beginning of the live album format though we did mentioned classics and no-so classics from the first half of the 70s but the second half...that's when everything changed around that period. So today, I only have 5 favorite live albums. No "mentions" or "least/worst live albums" today. So let's rock and roll this town or my list... My Top 5: 5. Kiss - Kiss Alive! 4. ZZ Top - Fandango! (It is part live album, part studio album like Cream's Wheels Of Fire, Pink Floyd's Ummagumma and the other album that I have on my list) 3. John Denver - An Evening With John Denver 2. Bob Marley & The Wailers - Live! And my number one favorite 1975 live album of all time goes to... 1. Earth Wind And Fire - Gratitude (another album that is part live, part studio album but the live versions of "Devotion" "Sun Goddess" and "Reasons"...oh my heart! And of course with the studio songs...my all time favorite is "Can't Hide Love" especially the harmonies at the end...my heart again. That's the reason why I love 50s-70s music so much now in my 40s because of the arrangements, the productions, the instrumentations, the melodies, the harmonies...oh! I still love the 80s and some 90s music of course since I am an 80s baby, 90s kid but anything from the 50s, 60s and 70s really gets my attention.) Anyway, that's my list and can't wait to be part of the Live Albums Of 1976.
🎊Happy New Year!🎇 I hope you all enjoyed the holidays. Awesome episode and I love all your tops, but Tommy's sweater was my favorite.💚
I had that Jaws game, because my parents wouldn't let me see the movie. (Next best thing, right?) I wonder how many other kids had that game for the same reason!?! Funny thing, this was the first year of this series where I have never owned any of the albums mentioned. "KISS Alive" is the only one I've even heard, to my recollection.
I have about 60 or more ktell albums but if i see liiberache like the country ones ive seen no thanks i hated jaws the movir around that tim we had rock n sockem robots and hungry hippos i still have the 6 million dollar man game
Never had Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots. My sister had Hungry Hungry Hippos though! Damn, that game was loud!
I’m not a big John Denver fan, but that live album is wonderful. But of COURSE Kiss Alive has to be number one. Live albums before Alive were largely tokens, throwaway albums used to complete contractual obligations. Alive showed that a live album could be a career builder instead. For that reason alone, it deserves to be number one, but it’s also a hell of a good record.
Man, those commercials though. American Sound and Jaws! I need a ticket back to 1975.
Right?? I actually had that Jaws game as a kid.
Let me help you out with Beatles For Sale/Beatles 65. Let's talk about those evil covers. Thank God that the Beatles recorded those covers. George Harrison hated the recording of the Beatles Live in Hamburg 1962 and didn't want it released. Those marvelous official remakes on Beatles For Sale/Beatles 65 show off the beginnings of the Beatles. Rock n Roll Music, Kansas City, Honey Don't, Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby are incredibly strong performances vocally and musically. The originals pay tribute to their present and paves the way for Rubber Soul. This is like their 1st concept album. They say hind sight is 20/20. Looking back from 2025 we should be able to see these things much clearly. I can see looking at it from a 1964 perspective it appears to be a slightly weaker album but from a 2025 looking back and seeing everything clearly perspective, It's an amazing album and one of their stronger, livelier albums. Definitely needs more respect. YES I know that Help came out after Beatles For Sale but that was just another movie album with of course great songs on it. I feel that Beatles
I was shocked that all 3 of you had Kiss Alive in your lists. Never saw that coming!
But were you stunned?
@@AsItShouldBePodcast Flabbergasted
Like the Rutles we are all shocked and stunned
Well, here ya go, a real AEROSMITH ranking * 1. ROCKS (1976) 2. TOYS IN THE ATTIC (1975) 3. DRAW THE LINE (1977) 4. GET YOUR WINGS (1974) 5. NIGHT IN THE RUTS (1979) 6. AEROSMITH (1973) 7. ROCK IN A HARD PLACE (1982) 8. DONE WITH MIRRORS (1985) 9. PERMANENT VACATION (1987) 10. PUMP (1989) Forget the rest, unless you're a MOR housewife, office worker or non-musical dork. *As for me saying "a real Aerosmith ranking" up there .... I was going to say "with Paul's," but not after hearing his off base critique of Draw The Line. That album is excellent, including not only the ultimate 'title track,' but also killers like "Sight For Sore Eyes, Get It Up, Critical Mass, I Wanna Know Why, Kings and Queens," etc. and I personally like that quasi-sloppy drug/coke haze in the performances and production. ⚡
Good episode, fewer great ones this year than I expected but Count Basie and Alex Harvey make it for me.
Fred Sanford would be angry that the Three Degrees aren't no. 1 on any of your best lists. That Liberace In Concert album isn't on any of your lists? Really? That beautiful theme from the Godfather? So happy to hear the love for John Denver. It's true, if you watch any live footage of him or hear live tracks outside of that 1975 album, his pitch is incredible and on point. No auto tune or pitch correction either. And it's not that American Idol pitch where there's no emotion and feeling along with it, the emotion and feeling is there too. Blows me away every time I hear it. He was definitely more than those few hits everyone knows. The Wildlife Concert in 1995 (20 years after the Evening With album and two years before he died) was my proper introduction to him. My mother had his albums too, so yeah. Ha.
Yeah, I've always liked John Denver too. For some reason I didn't make that clear in the video, but he was great.
@@AsItShouldBePodcast I believe you said something positive about him in a previous video, so I at least already figured, so it's ok. Ha.
How big was the pool of Live albums in 1975?
I had never heard of Keith Jarrett, thank you,
About 10-20 ft wide by 20-40 ft long, with a depth of 3-7 ft.
There can only be ONE #1 LIVE Album for 1975…..the one that launched thousands of guitar players, and popularized pyrotechnics now common among every genre of concert presentations. - KISS Alive!
Im 1st!!!
You should do an entire episode of your top-10 Neil Sedaka songs.
Dang Crystal 😂😂😂 you hate Zeppelins CODA and Presence, and you hate Yellow Submarine. All good though, you guys are awesome 👍
Prince (1979) is my personal favorite. I love every single song on it I can't believe it took me 30 years to find out how great it is. I recently purchased it on vinyl 🎉
I love the song Your Looking Fine, it has a great groove and House In The Country is my fav song off face to face , i mean this is punk before the 70s. David Watts is my fav off something else
No Creatures or Revenge?
Tell me you didn't watch the video without telling me you didn't watch the video
Paul Stanley's Solo LP is by far the best IMO
although Gene's is different and Ace's rocks
Looked up that David Cassidy album 👍 I agree with Tommy about Gary Glitter he's just 🤮 the great thing about Crystal is she is not afraid to say what she feels ❤ Hope yall have a great Rockin New Year 🎉🎉
