I always enjoy when you take a look at The Monkees! These 2 albums are really diverse, deep in the catalog choices of loyal fans. I enjoyed a potent insight I had really overlooked that you mentioned the quality of Davy's contribution on each offering. So right!!! Guess I was blinded by my Mike/Mick Devotion. Great review.
Great one Paul!!! And thank you for the right choice......Dude.....You and I CRUSHES Mommy and Daddy!!!!! I like Mommy and Daddy quite a bit. But You and I is my favorite Davy written song by far. I Won't Be The Same Without Her is an amazing track. Thanks again man.
Really enjoyed this. 1969 has always been the most fascinating year for the Monkees, in my opinion. The fact they continued on without a TV show, and losing a bandmate, they kept on truckin'. And these two albums have some real gems on them....INSTANT REPLAY may be my no. 3 fave LP by the guys. They're very incohesive , as we all know, but yet they have a certain charm and they are just A-OK the way they are. My biggest gripe is "Ladies Aid Society" as well...what a weird song with a very young David singing. Just sounded so out of place on PRESENT.
Well all right! My list: Shorty Blackwell (by default, I agree with you Ladies Aid Society is hot garbage) While I Cry (one of my fave Nez tracks); Just a Game (again by default....Never Tell a Woman is among my least fave Nez songs); Oklahoma Backroom Dancer (Mike sounds like he's having fun); Through the Looking Glass (Micky sells it well); Looking for the Good Times (but not by much); Bye Bye Baby (more interesting than Tear Drop City); The Girl I Left Behind Me (but it's close); You and I (arguably the best Davy co-write and yes, great Neil guitar); Me Without You (bouncy in a good way); Listen to the Band (a top ten Monkees song IMO); A Man Without a Dream (nice harmonies.) Great video once again!
Here’s my battle (I just did the album order) 1. Through the Looking Glass 2. Good Clean Fun 3. If I Knew 4. Just a Game 5. Never Tell a Woman Yes 6. Don’t Wait for Me 7. You and I 8. While I Cry/Listen to the Band (Tie) 9. Tear Drop City 10. The Girl I Left Behind 11. A Man Without a Dream 12. Pillow Time Instant Replay - 8 Monkees Present - 4
I had (and played a lot) "Present" long before I had "Instant Replay" so I have much more nostalgia for "Present" and I can't really compare the two. I always pronounced it like Christmas "present" or roll call "present". "Shorty Blackwell" is one of my favorites (skipping over the acapella first few seconds), I grew up with that track on the "Hit Factory" compilation. I'm assuming you've heard the alternate lyrics for "Mommy and Daddy".
For the longest time I wasn't sure which pronunciation of "Present" was correct until one of the bonus track CD editions came out and basically said that the title is short for, "The Monkees Present: Micky, Michael and David". Hence their names on the cover as well. The idea being that it's a collection of solo tracks by each member. And yeah, the alternate Mommy and Daddy is on the CD I mentioned above as well as the box set I showed in the video.
I was never the hugest fan of these two albums compared to the albums in 1967 and 1968. There are amazing songs on these two albums but as a whole they don’t stand a chance

The only pick you’ve made here that I disagree with is Good Clean Fun, which is one of my favorite Monkee tracks. Apart from that, we’re good!
Whew!
@ I know you were worried… 😊
