Hey there! My name is Austin and I am building a Van's RV-10 with my wife, Amanda. We are first-time builders and wanted to share all of the ups and downs of the build, and tricks and tips we've learned along the way. Subscribe and follow along!
RV-10 Doors, Part 2/2
In Part 2 of the RV-10 cabin door series, we dive into the door fitting and installation, including the challenging process of installing the Van’s door handles, the PlaneAround 180 Degree (third) door latch, and the Aerosport low-profile exterior handles. This stage came with plenty of struggles and a few mistakes along the way, but I’m sharing it all in hopes of helping others avoid the same issues. If you’re embarking on a similar journey, hopefully, my experience can save you some time and frustration. Enjoy!

Laser Cut Parts - Quality Control/Support Issues
Hi Austin, I'm a new viewer. I was wondering if you can sear your experience with primer, what kind do you use and how to apply it... thanks Great job Carlos
@@carlosalcantara7197 hi Carlos, thanks for watching! Due to where we live and plan to stay for the future, I have been doing very minimal primer work. All I’ve ever used, when I choose to prime a part, is Rustoleum Self Etch primer. I scuff with Scotchbrite, clean with isopropyl alcohol or acetone, then spray it. Works well for our situation, but you’ll want to research what’s best for where you are and what it will be exposed to
Everything is turning out to be junk these days. Sounds like quality control Has been handcuffed😂
Hey Austin, I hope you and your crew had a great Christmas. I was wondering when you built your rear seats, do the side angles stick up past the seat back by an 1/8 or so?? I’ve checked the dimensions 5 times and mine stick up. Need a sanity check please
@@JimDorn hi Jim, we sure did!! I hope you did too. And yes they did stick up. I remember them bugging me a lot when I built them. I have left them as-is for now, but may go back and grind them down if they are still noticeable after upholstery. You’re not the only one 😅
Why did you decide to add a third latch to your doors. Do the doors not fit tightly or rattle in a stock RV-10? In hind sight, was it worth the extra effort? What other third party modifications are you making to your RV-10?
@@345DF it needed some kind of a third latch for safety. My understanding is that in the first years of the RV-10, there were multiple occasions where a door was latched incorrectly, with the rear latch missing the hole, resulting in the door being ripped off at speed. Vans came out with a “safety latch”, which goes in the center of the door (where the PlaneAround latch is on mine), but the Van’s latch is pretty dang ugly and requires two hands to use when getting the door open. I think it was worth the extra effort. As fast as other third party modifications go, I have many and may miss some. Going from memory, I am going with: PlaneAround latch, Aerosport low profile handles, PlaneAround stainless steel door pins, Airflow Systems Air Conditioner, Airflow Systems 2007X Oil Cooler, AndAir Fuel Valve, Matco brakes, Aircraft Specialty braided fuel and brake lines, Cee Bailey windows (which I don’t have yet but would not corner myself into buying if I could do to again. Many reports of it not being worth the cost). I think that’s about it. And for avionics and other electrical I’m going with Advanced Flight Systems. They sell complete kits with wiring bundles and diagrams and everything needed to have a full IFR glass panel and all of the autopilot goodies and other accessories.
@@AustinManke Thank you for the prompt and thorough reply. I find this stuff to be particularly interesting, and I think that it would make a good UA-cam video. There is a fair amount of info about building a stock Van's RV kit, but not much info on third party modifications. Have you ordered your engine yet? Thunderbolt? Fuel injection? Electronic ignition? Why the different oil cooler? What kind of landing lights did you use? LED? Zip-tips? Center console for the air conditioning? Are you familiar with the Garmin GHA15 Height Advisor? Is it worth it?
@@345DF Those are all great questions! I am still in the decision phase for a lot of things but as I work through the build I'll be sure to address the modifications I am doing in my videos. Thanks for following along!
I saw the extra aluminum chunk you added to the counterweight rib, there, was that part of the service bulletin? Did you have to purchase an SB kit? I didn't realize they did this. I'll stop asking dumb questions and look closer at the SB. I'm just now building the elevator so i can seal up that trailing edge spar hopefully before putting buttoning up the skins so I don't have to go through the lightning holes.
@@flightsimguides no such thing as a dumb question! That piece of aluminum was part of the service bulletin kit. I think it was to offset the weight that was added by the tank sealant. You’re at a perfect spot to get it done. I did have to buy the kit to implement it, but figured it was better to do it now than after paint sometime in the future
Damn dude, that hammer on the linear gear stock/rack made the cleanest cut I think I've ever seen a hammer make... Where did you get it? We all need a hammer like that in our toolboxes!
🤣
I appreciate the level of detail you captured. I just picked up (secondhand) all 4 kits to build my RV-10. Between you and "Building the 10", I think I have a pretty good understanding of what needs to be done. It's been a joy watching your progress. Did you ever get your pilots license?
@@Challenged1 thank you so much! How exciting! You’ll enjoy the build. I really like that channel as well. He does a great job packaging up the info in a clear and concise manner. And yes I did! I have my PPL. I am thinking I’ll go for my instrument rating sometime before build completion if I can. Thanks for the comment and for following along. Happy building!
Austin really enjoy watching you. I am a retired farmer and always thought I would love to build a plane. After watching you I am convinced that I couldn’t do it. As a farmer getting a bigger hammer is what my dad always taught me. But I am smart enough to know that my dad’s philosophy wouldn’t work here. Hoping I last long enough to see you flying your plane.
@@berniebrown9115 Thanks for watching and sharing that, I really appreciate it! Building definitely has its challenges, but it sounds like your problem solving skills from farming would have served you well! There have definitely been times when the fix was a bigger hammer. Thanks for the comment and can’t wait for you to see it flying!
You are the MVP for capturing this much on camera and for taking the time to edit it all! Especially during one of the most mentally exhausting parts of the build. Proud of you! Doors are looking great :)
@@amandamanke411 you’re the MVP for preventing the great purge of footage and convincing me to keep editing it. Thanks for the support 😊
Hi Austin im at this stage of the plans for running conduit quick question how did you create the holes in the ribs for the conduit to run thru (under rear seat) and do you recall what size of conduit used for running up front as i see the holes are smaller. Thanks
Hey!! I predrilled the holes in the seat ribs before assembly, but I think you should be able to get in there after assembly to put in new holes if needed using a right angle attachment. The conduit is the stuff from Van's (Part Number: DUCT NT5/8-50). I oversized the seat holes (don't remember the size used), but the others I believe are at 3/4". I am not 100 percent certain, but remember the making the holes slightly undersized so that the conduit would sort of "lock" into location once pulled through. The conduit is 0.810" OD
Good morning Austin. Great job knocking that -10 out. I’d love to check out Kitflight if you haven’t given out all of the codes. Thanks!
Thank you Chris! I unfortunately am all out of them. All were claimed. Haven't heard from a few of them though so I'll let you know if that changes or if Pavlo is willing to let a few more out. Liking your videos!!
Hey Chris, send him an email at support@kitflight.com and mention your channel. He is interested in giving you some codes
I say to myself "I should build a -10 next" then I watch another of your fiberglass videos, and nope right back out of that idea.
@@RyanE67 lol. I have noped myself out of the garage some nights where I just don’t feel like getting dusty. This has reaffirmed my love for aluminum. Couldn’t imaging building an all composite aircraft. Nope nope nope!
Doors look good Austin. Don’t spend a lot of time fine tuning fitment of the doors until you at least get the latch mechanism solidified. This way the doors will be held in their final location and then you can do some final fitting. As for door to canopy final gaps, talk with your painter and see exactly what they’re looking for. Some like you to leave the gaps super tight so they can sand them to their specifications and others like you to get the gaps as close to “finished” as possible. You don’t want to sink hours of work into something that you’re already going to be paying someone else for in the future.
Thank you Zach! They sure do seem like the parts that never end. I have them MOSTLY done, but am stopping the sanding for now after reading your comment. You make a great point. I just sent some emails off to some different paint shops to see what they are looking for. Sure would hate to be spending extra time in fiberglass dust without needing to..... Thanks again, and I hope your build is going well!
You are make us mere mortals look bad. I’m still shaping my pilot door and can truly appreciate the speed that you’re kicking butt. I can only tolerate about an hour at a time working on these things. I had the luxury of having help with bonding process and couldn’t of imagined doing it myself. Looking forward to the rest of your build. And seeing your tips and tricks
@@williambeckert9057 Thanks! Trust me, I feel plenty “mortal”, especially after hours of sanding. I think fiberglass sanding is what purgatory must be like. I appreciate the support, and I’ll keep sharing the tips and tricks I find. Thanks for watching and happy building!

@@Famousz88 thank you David! We hope you’re all doing well!! 😃
Thanks for the videos. I noticed that the tailcone F-1006 bulkhead flanges are bent substantially inward which makes sense given that those flanges face aft and the tailcone tapers, but the plans do not specify an angle for those flanges and they also do not say not to straighten them. Similarly, the tailcone frame flanges, which all face forward, would seem to need a slight outward bend but no angle is specified. The plans do say to flute the flanges and I would normally straighten them to 90 degrees before fluting. Should these tailcone flanges all be straightened to 90 degrees or left as they came from the factory?
Hey there! If I remember right, I didn’t have to bend the flanges on the tailcone to match the skin angle. Looking at the flanges as they are now, it looks looks like all I did was flute them to straighten. I'm pretty sure I just let the rivets pull everything tight against the skin during assembly, and it worked out fine. I would recommend a call to the builder support line though if it worries you at all. I use them quite often. Hope that helps!
Ok, on a scale of 1 to 10 how rewarding was it to get that fiberglass-to-fuselage work done? 12.7? It's looking like an airplane!
@@JoshWelsh oh man. At least a 12.7! Really is neat to see it actually looking like an airplane
@@AustinManke Nice! I just completed my inventory on my -14 tail kit, so now my own build begins!
@ that’s exciting!! Enjoy the build! Planning on doing any build videos on UA-cam?
Great job Austin. I definitely think measuring the door surrounds and making your initial cut to those marks is the way to go. A lot less putting on/taking off of the canopy that way.
@@auburnaviator6167 thank you!! You’re right about that. Much better than cutting to the scribe location knowing that more would need to come off anyways
I used diamond grit oscillating blades and jig saw blade to cut the fiber fiberglass without spraying dust everywhere. Lots of control over the cuts and just vacuums up. The blades are a bit pricey but I've only needed one of each so far and I'm almost done with both doors and cabin top. I should really post some photos on vansairforce, it made it so much easier and I've not seen anyone else use them.
@@StewartAllen I used one of the jigsaw ones for the window cutout and really liked it. Should have used it for some of the other cuts too though. You’re right about the lack of dust!
I had an edge distance problem with my center brace as well. I haven’t drilled it yet cause I’m working on the doors as well presently and will get back to it. Vans said that adding some cloth and epoxy on the cabin top to gain some edge distance is exceptable. Look forward to watching your progress and seeing how you tackle it
@@williambeckert9057 it sounds like it’s a pretty widespread issue. Even looking at the factory RV-10 at Oshkosh and various other completed builds, I noticed the support bracket is generally pretty far forward with what looked like very little bite on those front two bolts going through the fiberglass. I think I’ll do something similar and just get it as far forward as possible. Edge distance in the steel part up front probably won’t be great but my understanding is that steel is more forgiving with that than aluminum
wowowowow I am so happy I didn't do a -10... I would need to try sooooo hard not to over-cut that roof.
Definitely the most stressful part of the build so far. Thankfully everything can be fixed with epoxy and patience if needed though 😅
lol dont cut in half
I know you mentioned this in a video, but what paint are you using on the interior?
@@buildingthe10 it’s rustoleum matte hammered black spray paint (300607)

Nice! Glad it got there. I saw it in the warehouse recently with your name on it, and was excited for ya!
@@gregpdx thank you Greg!! Excited to get going on it
Good deal Austin. Tip I found out for the doors/window surrounds: the scribe lines (much like the canopy) are all over the place. The door outer scribe lines were very generous and I had to take off way more than the scribe dictated. The window scribe lines were just the opposite and if you cut to the scribe line you would have to add more material back.
@@auburnaviator6167 thank you! And thanks for the tips! Those scribe lines seem to sometimes cause more harm than good. The main canopy frame ones that you start with sure did give you a false sense of hope. Ended up cutting much more off than initially called out. It’s all building character though I guess…. 😂
I find it interesting how the finishing kits are all going out with front seats lately, but numerous people are still waiting for year plus timeframes on backordered front seats. I know they are trying to send things “complete” but it’s a bad look that so many are waiting and everyone else is getting them in newer orders.
@@LISRAREF I totally hear you. It really sucks for those waiting on back ordered parts. I think it has to do with their bankruptcy plan that they settled on with the court, where new orders would take priority for fulfillment. It does look bad though
That’s coincidental that I just got my finish kit on the 2nd of October and finished the inventory and your video popped up. Just curious as to when you had ordered yours. I had ordered mine Jan or feb of 23’. The canopy is a PIA but slow and steady it’ll com out ok. Keep it up
@@williambeckert9057 what a coincidence! I ordered mine in June of 2023. They must have processed a large batch of them. And ohhhh yeah it is! I hear the doors are even more….. fun….? lol. Thanks for watching!!

I don’t know what Dynon’s instruction manual looks like but if it’s anything like the Garmin G3X manual it is very straight forward as to what all of the components are and how they should all be installed and wired together. Can’t wait to continue following along as you continue your build. Congrats on the sale!
Thank you! Having a good chunk of the avionics is a huge milestone, and the wiring harnesses will definitely save a ton of time. I can't even imagine trying to do this all on my own. Tackling your own wiring is next-level dedication! Dynon's manuals have been really thorough so far. Very impressed. Best of luck with your G3X wiring!!! Appreciate you following along!
hi lol
@@MrBarbuster hi 👋
ahhh, dude, the social proof "call" in the middle of the video, that's golden! I'm gonna try that in my videos.... ;-) Congrats on getting your buyer under contract!
@@flightsimguides Thanks! My timing just happens to be *that* good! 😄 If you can make it work in your videos, go for it! Maybe we’ll start a new trend: “unexpected business call” cameos. Glad you enjoyed it, and appreciate the congrats!
At what part in your build did you order from Advanced? I'm in the middle of my -14A wings and see that it would be good to get going on servos, etc. while the wings are still open on the bottom. Thanks.
@@md9680 I just put it in a few weeks ago. If I did things over again I’d do it as I went along with the build like you’re thinking of doing. I’m going to have to get back to the wings to install the components and then close up the bottom skins. It would have been nice to be totally “done” with them with the AFS/Dynon components installed in them.
Nice nice.. by the way, how big is the shipping box?
@@zedcal2552 thank you! Not too big. It’s about 2’x2.5’x1’
Amanda about made me spit out my soda when she said “Sounds fake.” 😂😂😂
@@BlueSkiesAhead lol 😂
Great video Austin. Make sure to add some caterpillar grommet to the tunnel cover opening where the brake lines run through to prevent any possible chafing. Looking forward to the AFS unboxing. Those videos are always like early Christmas for me. I just got mine from Stein about a month ago and will be attending the AEA wiring workshop in mid October. Hoping to feel more confident in the task of panel wiring after the workshop! Hope momma and the little one are doing well.
Thank you! Great tip on the caterpillar grommet, I’ll make sure to add one when I install it for good. I will have the AFS unboxing video out this week. Christmas in September! The workshop sounds like a great way to jump into things. Amanda and the little one are doing well, thanks for asking! I hope your family is all doing well too!
I'm just starting my build. Not including "all" things when filming makes perfect sense. I love that you include "gotchas". To me that means the most. (As a builder). I can "study up" before I tackle uncharted territory. Selfishly, I would love to see a short briefing on any "other than stock" additions or substitutions with a touch of WHY? Thanks for the videos! I know they take time. God Bless you and yours!
Thank you! Glad the "gotchas" are helpful. I try to do the same before jumping into a new section. Thanks for the feedback. I’ll try to include more on the non-stock mods and why I went with them. They usually are the result of me taking the advice found from someone on the internet, so I am always hesitant to be the next to pass along the info to others on the internet as I don't know what I am doing half of the time... I'll try to include more of it though. Appreciate the support, and God bless you and yours too!
Aviation has always been a dream of mine.. I got sick a few years ago.. happy you're living the dream. Keep it going. A lot of UA-camrs it seems to stop making videos when it comes to the firewall forward and finishing their rv's. Keep it going and keep up the great work. Praying life doesn't throw you a curveball and make you give up on your dream.
@@randy-johnkostapapas9944 Thanks for the support! So sorry to hear about you getting sick. That really is a huge bummer. Everything can come to a halt so quickly with health issues. You're right though, firewall forward and overall finishing is where things seem to get tricky, especially when trying to stay on top of recording and keeping organized with footage. I'm really trying to stay on top of it the best I can documenting the whole build. Appreciate the encouragement, and I’ll keep pushing forward!
Did the installation of the scoop on the underbelly require any doublers? Or are the rivenuts driven through the existing skin alone? I don't see any doublers in the video, but I just want to be sure... (I bought the AC kit from SFSA and am getting ready to install the scoop.)
@@buildingthe10 no doublers for the scoop, but there were doublers for the A/C line penetrations. Just not for the scoop to skin itself. I’m curious how the SFSA kit goes together. I’ve heard great things about it. Are there doublers for the rivnuts in the scoop with their kit?
@@AustinManke No doublers in the SFSA kit, at least not that I have noticed (at this point, I haven't really looked that closely though). I just expected there to be some doublers but I guess the skin is strong enough to hold the scoop...
@@buildingthe10 yeah the skin seems nice and sturdy to attach to. Excited to see how your AC kit goes together. Let’s see some videos!
@@AustinManke Lol, they're coming; I haven't done too much this summer, but am about to get back into it!
almost there🥳
Love following your build - and Amanda's favorite scripture :-)
Thanks for following along! 😊
Great videos Austin ! You are way ahead of me
Thank you!! Keep at it!
You've probably already solved for it, but on the seatbelt cable you could just put a wrap of the self-adhesive silicone that we use for wrapping our wire bundles at the shell connector.
@@RyanE67 oh I like that idea!! Super simple
@@AustinManke I had to do something similar on a braided oil line that was running close to the valve cover on an air cooled VW engine. Simple, fool proof, easy inspection for wear
@@RyanE67 Nice! That’s a solid trick. Kind of like duct tape’s cooler, more refined cousin.
Nice color choice on the primer! I might do the same. Question: Is your whole interior going to be matte hammered (instrument panel, sidewalls, floorboards, etc)? It appears Rick Eiler used a light gray on the upper sidewalls? And is his instrument panel another color? Thanks Austin! Great meeting you at Air Venture!
Thank you! It I thought I recognized your profile picture. Great meeting you at AirVenture too! My plan right now is to paint everything except for the fiberglass canopy and instrument panel that color. I plan to have AFS powdercoat the panel black, and I plan on using Zolatone to paint the interior of the canopy (stole that idea from BuildFlyGo). I will also at some point get carpet to cover the floors and baggage area. It does look like Rick had a different color on the panel. I did not ask him about that when I spoke with him there, but looking at the photos I would bet that is powder coated. The black inserts by the front seat area sides I believe are some sort of sound deadening material. Or something similar. I remember him mentioning that when we talked.
Love the deep dive in to the AC system. Great video!
Thanks so much Zach! Glad you enjoyed it. More to come!
