Unravelling the Mystery of Popular 70s MLM Owl Art: It's Not What You'd Expect!
-- CLICK HERE FOR MORE! --
In this video, I discover the story behind why so many GenXers are familiar with this artwork, how it came to be, and the story behind its virality in the 1970s.
These two owls have graced the walls of every home I've ever lived in and, while packing this week, it reignited a curiosity I've had for years: just WHERE did the owl craze start, where did THIS specific image come from, and why was it EVERYWHERE in the late 70s?
Mom told me it came from a home party / pyramid scheme / MLM (multilevel marketing) kind of thing her friend had. Going off that and the cropped info on the image itself, I uncovered an incredible story behind how these screech owls came to be in so many Southern American homes.
There was a lot more I wanted to put into this video but, since it's so unlike any of the rest of my content, I didn't want to make it too long. I'm going to link a few resources if you're interested in further information.

    Have you found any volcanic glass in the areas around you? I have been hunting minerals for a couple of years now, I’m located North of the Brazos River above Possum Kingdom Lake. I normally don’t go out on the river until we have heavy rains giving the river time to move the rocks I seek. There is so much petrified wood that I have about six five gallon buckets of assorted sizes but all in some form of the obvious variety of petrified wood. I have this drive in me to recover agates in all sizes and form, I have only found one nugget of gold in my six years of being on the Brazos River, and yes I did find it in a backcut cove with the black sand. The best way I have found to clean up the river rocks is by using a excellent product you can get at your local Ace Hardware store, it is: 30% vinegar,(this is used to kill weeds, and clean rust from tools). You can get stronger vinegar but you will have to purchase it on line from Amazon, because of the Texas agriculture regulations, saying you have to have a chemical license before you can buy it. This product should not be used by anyone under 18 years old, above 30% it will burn a hole in your skin and hurt for a couple of days, caution is needed. But it does an excellent job cleaning off the Minerals out of the river basin. Did you know that there is a three tier plato before the farmers land begins. Which starts at the center of the river, the Game wardens keep them in check for us. I too have travelled the upper basin in my places and with my several kayaks, I will take along a extra kayak just for the minerals and petrified wood as I have found many large parts of a the trunk and have had to pass them up, mostly because of the weight. But I do mark the location with a pin drop, as I might return to retrieve it. By the way I am an old guy who has retired and now just travel to anyplace on the Brazos River. At some point this year I will be going to check out the Colorado River in Texas. Hope to see you there, but really you should get a small kayak for your rockhounding adventures, arrow heads will become abundant when you can see them at water level stuck in the mud just above the water line. I think arrow heads are great and I have given away hundreds of them to people who are just walking along the edges of the river. Years ago I had a massive collection of fossils and arrowheads and spear points, pottery from the past.

    I am a fossil collector living in southwest Texas. I have some unusual bivalves ( I would say clams, oysters.) and a large gastropod snail. I can't identify them through either the Internet or books, or having taken photos and posting on Facebook rockhounding groups. I am trying to organize my collection and label everything by at least genus, if not species. I found a geological map of the area I found them in, it says Quartenary, but the pieces just seem so much older - and resemble similar species I found on the Internet from the Cretaceous. What is the best way to identify pieces? The local museum and college doesn't help - unless it is a significant vertebrate find.

    Great stuff, but you should consider a kayak. There are far more shells along the banks of the river than were you are looking. They are just as easy to get out of the river banks as you are trying to get out of the dry river islands. You can get a new kayak at the end of every season. People buy them in the Spring and find out they have no place for them during the winter months and thus sell them for a fraction of the original cost, just wanting to get out from under trying to find somewhere to store it. Three years ago I gave kayaking lessons and trips down the Brazos River, I had purchased 13-16 assorted kayaks, took a old,’bull hauler trailer and fixed it up to haul all 15 of them to a designated place to launch from. We ALWAYS, paddled up river so that everyone could get back to their vehicles, without getting lost. Some only came to paddle and not looking for Minerals and fossils, while others would stay look and find both.

  • @jimmiarney
    @jimmiarney 4 місяці тому

    As also I am a Rockhounder with fossils in the mix. You asked about the piece of petrified wood, what you have is a mimic of the real petrified wood. Meaning after the real petrified wood vacated the tree, sand replaced it filling the void. Thus over thousands of years the sand was forced inside the void. Eventually the water would push it out of the mold and now you have a mimic of the voided part of the tree. I learned this from a game warden and a property owner who was trying to have me arrested as I was standing in the water in the estuary of the river. Never got that ticket as I had never stepped out of the river. Property owner was schooled on the legality of his un-educated understanding of the tiers in the land on the sides of the river.

    Selenite crystals are supposed to be good for your Chakra. There are also supposed to be able to cleanse other crystals. I believe you noticed there are layers in the crystals. If you will freeze them for a bit then put them in hot water (like in your sink) you may be able to split them apart at the layers. I’ve been to that mine several times.
