I'm planning ahead for Christmas and checking out the National Geographic advent calendar, with 25 days of fossils, rocks, and minerals. Will I be disappointed? Probably. But WHY, is the real question.

Yeah, I've never had much luck with Nat Geo anything either! The red agate and crystal point weren't too awful! Definitely not $30 worth! The specimen bags you mentioned at the gas station .... I've seen some that are 100% dyed quartz but the last one I checked out at Zoo Montana was only $5 and it was all epic carnelian! Sometimes you get lucky!

I definitely need to go back and actually look at what they have at Buc-ee's; it's only a half-hour drive from me and I could take backroads and make it a fun day of photography and exploration I guess. I enjoy finding - ahem - hidden gems! (please don't unsubscribe.)

I have to agree with you, that was the ugliest tigers eye i have ever seen. Not to mention the blue calcite thats white! Not to mention the other items they may have screwed up on! You are correct about being able to buy a child or small rockhound in you life, any of their other products, for less, and getting a much better deal. But amazon also has those same type of kits, by other companies other than nat geo, that you get the same type and amount of rocks as you do with the nat geo ones, for less money. And for less money than you paid for the advent calendar, their rock, mineral and fossil kits have 200 rocks and minerals, and are muck cooler. Thank you for you unbiased review of this product. I know you tried to be non biased, but its hard since they keep living up to their poor standard of their products. Its disappointing, especially coming from nat geo!

I really did have to figure out what some were based on process of elimination! I found a couple of other kits and I put them in the video, towards the end where I talked about the value. I mean, if they're not getting educational stuff, then why bother? You could make your own advent calendar by gluing little boxes together or getting little bags and stapling them to a string you could hang up, and then they'd have 175 other specimens to play with later, too. Although I don't know how many repeats there are in there. Thanks for watching!

    Mass production for "educational toys"

I mean, there was a little education in there. Somewhere. I'm sure of it.
