BIG Fire Agates and Glassy Chalcedony “Eggs”

I dragged us out to the middle of absolutely nowhere to find stunning fire agates and chalcedony nodules in the Sonoran Desert. We slowly discover our new favorite spot as we do quite a bit of driving and hiking - each find seemed to get larger and more vibrant as the day continued. I was sure to hype Sara up on the sunsets, desert roses, and friendly cows… while failing to mention the rampant ...

Join me for some Arizona rockhounding near Tucson as we navigate some treacherous roads on some old tires that just barely get us there. It’s beautiful out here! Sara drives us North and over the border as we head from the North Shore of Minnesota to nearby Thunder Bay, Ontario. Thunder Bay amethyst is a special variety that occurs only in Northeast Ontario. It has iron (hematite) trapped within the crystals, giving the typically purple amethyst points a red speckled appearance. We visited two mines on our trip, they are: Diamond Willow Amethyst Mine Bl...

Rare Thomsonite and Waterfall Hike | Rockhounding Michigan Upper Peninsula

I head to Michigan’s remote Western Upper Peninsula to explore the shores of Lake Superior for agates. To my surprise, I find something more rare, which was a beautiful piece of thomsonite. Thomsonite is a rare zeolite found only in very small regions of Minnesota and Michigan. It is one of the most beautiful hikes I’ve done in the Upper Peninsula. And for once, the bugs left me alone. Those are pretty stones. But can be toxic. I would recommend testing it immediately with few drops of HCL acid, if it foams and is brittle just throw it away, not worth the risk.
@@neskrafe yep, I’m pretty sure it’s degraded chalcanthite. It’s in an acrylic container for that reason
Cool!
please tell me what road that stream is by
I live in Alamogordo NM right now and I will definitely be heading down to check out that spot thanks
Alamogordo is such a cool place. Loved every day of my time there 👍
stone at 04:00 looks like moss agate. To me, moss agate is the most beautiful of all agate stones. And it can be quite expensive. Do not cut it, just polish.
There’s all sorts of cool green material alongside chalcedony in the Keweenaw area. It’s a really cool area of the upper peninsula
LOOKS LIKE A FUN TIME..........................................................................
How to market agates
Had a similar situation of someone letting go of some great rocks in Petoskey. Someone seeded two big Petoskeys directly in front of the stairs where everyone enters the beach. Best large Petoskeys I had ever seen.
That’s awesome! I assume one day I’ll get old too and realize “wow I really gotta get rid of some of these” 😅
Served you a few drinks if you remember! Great production keep it up!
Yes - thank you for the rundown on the world of whiskey and bourbon. We had a lot of fun! Glad you like the vids 👊
I love collecting rocks too!! ❤ Just saying "hi" to a fellow rock hound.
Well hi there! 👋 Just got done emerald mining in North Carolina!
Beautiful material 😍 I just received my first pieces of it this week.
Thomsonite is such a strange and beautiful one
That "dead end" at the end of the road is my favorite place in the area. The hill you pass on the right before you hit the succor creek crossing has great blue with white banded agate float. There are some dark blue almost purple seams of clear chalcedony in the ground in some spots, there is also chalcedony/jasper seams 3ft wide at points if you follow the fault line up the hill, and an outcrop of dense chalcedony/quartz laden andesite on the north side of the top of the hill. There is a claim marker on the lower hill with a phone number you can call to get permission to dig on it. There is a little triangle split in the road before the area you stopped in initially, if you go left instead of right it takes you into a few areas that have very nice "classic" graveyard point plume agate. The best spots in that area have claim markers (T23S R46E Sec. 25), but there is plenty of good float on the road that goes through it. The Gem Shop Inc. also has their Beverly Marie claim in the area, I haven't found their claim marker yet or seen them working.
@@TH-ui7yr this comment is a complete wealth of knowledge. I’ve got this added to my map with notes for my next visit. Thank you very much!
The east most and highest part of kilbournes hole is where you'll find the highest concentration of peridot. They are in clusters called bombs.
Very cool! Yeah, I essentially explored as much of it as I could in a day. It’s a very cool spot
I’ve lived here my entire life and never knew there was a place you could do this. For sure going up there myself
Me, who’s currently in El Paso. 😅
@@JackOfAllTradesButMasterOfNone That summer heat out there is no joke. Stay cool 🙂
@@ThirdPlanetRocks thank you!! 🥺😍 it DOES get pretty damn hot here! Fortunately, it hasn’t hit the 110’s or higher like it did for the past few years. 😳 it’s been in the low 90’s to 103°. 🤔 the highest we got, was 115° last year.
@JackOfAllTradesButMasterOfNone 115 is absurd, I can’t fathom that. There’s a reason I went in winter lol
@@ThirdPlanetRocksyeah, our winters aren’t too bad, fortunately. 😅 it makes perfect sense as to why you came at the time you did! 🙂 Yeah, being here in the summer now, is as close to Las Vegas/Arizona/Death Valley temps. 😳 but yeah, I’ve been trying to keep hydrated. 🙂 Next time you come to El Paso, hit up Chico’s Tacos and Whataburger and other local little sweet spots! ☺️🙂 unless you currently live in El Paso, you can disregard the last part I said. 😅
Well enjoyed!
Thanks for hanging out, glad you liked it!
Have you ever seen the Green Sand Beach in Hawaii? It's made up of peridots.
No, I’ve sadly never been to Hawaii. Bucket list for sure 🙂

All of that black rock is basalt. At 6:19 that's a mantle xenolith that you're holding. All the other green fragments are parts of mantle xenoliths.
@@witherbossbros1157 Thank you for all the geology insight you added. I’m always eager to learn from people with the ability to visualize it like that. Much appreciated 🤙
@@ThirdPlanetRocks Sure thing. I have a degree in geology and during the pandemic found a free textbook on igneous rocks - glad to share with people with people who are interested in learning more!
That conglomerate comes from a sedimentary layer that the eruption blew though, carrying up that chunk. Eruptions carry up wall rocks of the rock they intrude through.
@@witherbossbros1157 ah, so that was pre-existing bedrock prior to the eruption. I appreciate the geology help - thx!
@@ThirdPlanetRocks Yeah, you can read about that on the wikipedia page on the volcano, but this is true of every volcano.
At 2:28 that looks like a massive mantle xenolith of peridotite.
Yes - and they’re HEAVY. That peridotite is deceptively dense
@@ThirdPlanetRocks Yeah, olivine and pyroxene significantly heavier than quartz and feldspar (granite).
Elder brother, I watch all your videos, all your videos are good, my name is Vikas Goswami, my qualification is Chemistry MSc.

What's the difference between peridot and the green rocks that were formed in the mid 40s as a result of nuclear bomb testing @ Alamogordo?
@@jibbyjabbatv The ones from Alamogordo make you feel funny if you hold ‘em
That would be glass from the nuke. If it is from a meteor hitting the ground the glass is called tektites.
@@markrouse2416 looks like men & women will be wearing peridot jewelry in the future.

You can increase your fun on Superior by bringing a gold pan with you and going through some of the black sands, granted you will only find flour gold but then gold is gold.
Have always wanted to! Do they allow sluices on the shores or hand pan only?

All the good thomsonite are up by Thomsonite Inn area, so I'm not sure why your telling people to only go between schroeder and Lutsen when toward the end of the video your just down the road a little bit from Thomsonite Inn.

Why are you Rock hounding in the Winter. July August best time for Ida Ore
Because I was living in an SUV and happened to be there. Make the most of what you got
You know it’s gonna be a good day when you make it a half mile or so before you realize the car door is still open and the keys are in the ignition. 😂
The distraction was immediate and I just kinda wandered off. Good day indeed!
Rad!!! My husband is working on the castle rock bridge. The other day, he saw something glowing on the bank underneath. I guess the sun was hitting just right because it doesn't glow without light! I'm assuming it's some sort of agate, but when I take a pic and search in my rock hounding app, I keep getting different results every time I either change the angle or shine a light underneath. One time, they said it was amber with a fossilized bug in it...that'd be cool! Lol
Yeah the rock ID app is… flukey at best. That’s cool your husband found that. If it’s glowing in the sun, it’s likely chalcedony or a carnelian
This is NY?
What mine is it ?
No, it’s in Ontario, Canada Blue Point Amethyst Mine
You gotta share this spot eventually man, looks awesome!
Agreed! I want to fully map it. That final section I was in seems to to back quite a bit further.

I went exactly where you said you went, and probably left with 60-80lbs of material. It’s just sitting around everywhere! Thank you for suggesting this spot now I have opal in my collection 😊
It's some pretty cool stuff. I can't imagine the kind of pieces that came out of the rock faces where people were chiseling at the hilltops.
@@ThirdPlanetRocks I looked down below but also went up to some of those rocky cliffs that stuck out, definitely bigger pieces up there 👍
@@MegaDeathGiver I’m jealous. I gotta go back 🙌 So glad you got some fun out of the vid
I am a casual rockhound myself, and an avid hot springer and camper. To date, that/those springs are my all time favorite, especially the one with the rock wall surround. You can immerse yourself up to your neck while standing.
Yeah, that hot spring was awesome. A close second for me would be fifth water hot springs near Provo, UT. Have to compete with quite a few people for a spot though
