- Today I found Donna. She’s a giant chunk of pastelite from Burro Creek, a popular rockhounding spot in Arizona near Wikieup.
Check out @RocksForBrains - she made an amazing video that helped me find Burro Creek!
Join me as I struggle to get what’s now the biggest piece in my collection into my car.
Location information included in the video!

Hey guys - just a quick mention of the creator who helped me find this spot, Rocks For Brains.
With her permission, I left a link to her channel in the description. It’s like a mini-guide for all the sweet spots in Arizona!
That’s so much for letting me know! I’m having such a hard time finding long good rock spots
Love the photo of you and Donna! Such a great looking couple!
Why thank you, don’t tell my gf
Burro Creek is a pretty well known rockhounding destination with a wide variety of materials. You do a good job finding stuff on your own.
Wow hope Donna cuts up nice! Love the video, thanks for sharing your trip!
Thanks for kicking back and watching! I’ve had so much fun making these videos. It’ll be a struggle to find someone with a saw big enough to tackle Donna… she’s a big gal! 🤣
The wild burros are left over from the 19th century miners, the burros would escape or just be let loose when they left the claim. I've been thru Wikiup many times but never thought to rockhound it. Good luck with Donna. TFS
Haha thanks for the backstory! I’d like to think I was an escaped mining burro in a past life 😂
@@ThirdPlanetRocks And so you were. "Waves magic wand*
I really like the way you do your videos. Donna was so awesome but that even larger one you put your foot on is amazing with all the druzy :) I like the banded looking chunks that look like Lake Superior Agates. Enjoyed watching
It’s so cool to see you sticking around! I edit on an iPhone, so it’s been challenging to keep these concise and it takes a while to cut out the less exciting parts.
Awesome, Griffin! What a nice score! I’m thinking that red banded one will really surprise you if you slice it up! That big “Donna” is Awesome! Burro Creek is a place I hope to visit before too long. Thanks for sharing your adventure!💎
I’m so glad people are enjoying these videos. This is something I’ve dreamed of doing since I first started collecting rocks when I was 7 years old.
Get yourself out to Arizona - it’s beautiful out there and the solitude of Burro Creek is unmatched 😌
happy hunting for beautiful stones friends, you will find many extraordinary stones there.
Still watching in Indonesia? That’s so cool. Happy hunting!
Howdy Griffin! I just discovered your channel and find it quite interesting. You have a unique wit and style in your content creating that will bring you many new subscribers (so much so that I have just subscribed😁). Lauren ( AKA Rocks for Brains) is an awesome person that has a great channel that helps educate rockhounds of all kinds. Donna is a beauty. Thanks for sharing your journey with us, and I look forward to your future posts!
Hey Dave! Thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment that totally made my day.
Lauren’s channel is super cool. I really liked when she rented a saw and sliced up what seemed like 200 rocks in a day haha!
Hope I can keep you entertained - new video on Wednesday from Cali 🙂
@@ThirdPlanetRocks Cool! Looking forward to it!
Absolutely wonderful finds!!
Gorgeous 😊
✌️💜😃
Thanks Kendra - there’s definitely even better stuff to be found within this place if you look hard enough!
Awesome finds, Donna is a nice one.
She was so nice she got to ride shotgun on the way home 😂
Thanks for watching!
Burro creek is on my bucket list! Top one right now. And I live in Az. I just need to go!!
It’s a good spot! The dirt road that winds into there is a fun scenic drive too
Nice job man, love your channel and how you share your information and show where you were and how you got to the rockhounding spot. I'm in the North U.S so I prob won't go to these spots but I love the context and it helps me learn more about the areas.
Thanks Aaron. Wisconsin is home for me, so im only really able to hit these spots while traveling. If I’m lucky, im hoping to hit Lake Superior a few times this summer.
Shoot I wish i saw this vid earlier! I tried to go here in spring after a good rain but didnt see this video until now. really appreciate you showing the map locations!
Yeah the map locations are my biggest challenge. When traveling, it takes a lot of time to find good spots that are publicly accessible
We are near Burro creek now (Signal Rd). Have collected tons of agate, but no purple pastelite. Heading over to your spot next! Great video!
I am jealous! Beautiful place to live. Best of luck, it is a pretty elusive material!
Cool stuff.
⚒️💜
dammmm mainland has a lot of treasure that waiting to be found!!!!
Hoping the inside of this one is a light purple color all the way through. Color seems promising
I hope your relationship with Donna works out LOL!
Things are going well! She’s oddly quiet though, I will say…
@@ThirdPlanetRocks I think you should worry more if she starts talking to you about your future together xD
I’d love to visit Arizona but more so to find some gold nuggets with a metal detector! Those agates are crazy, whoah 😂 Donna the beast your truck must be overloaded by then!
Let’s just say the passenger seat is a little… occupied 😂
donnas a beast !
A sturdy gal, for sure
Nice one mate. I got a few chalcedony beasts 30+ kg 25kg etc
Those are some big ones! Ever cut any of them?
Unfortunatelly no. I dont have such machinery. Only some small ones. I dug a dark one out of a beach recently must be 40-50 kg beast. I can barely lift them. I broke a blue chalcedony around 15 kg only with an elecric breaker. If you want i can send you pictures to have a look at them. Nice work mate keep it up 👍🏻
Idk, I think I would have to get a trailer to haul home huge rocks. Omg there's soo much! I live in Michigan and went out rockhounding today in the balmy 26°. Couldn't take sitting inside any longer.
I’m from just outside Milwaukee and I know how that gets! Michigan is the most beautiful state in the Midwest. I have a love for the UP and the fun Yooper culture up there
If you're ever in the central Arizona Area around Phoenix I got a great pretty popular spot for some nice obsidian / apache tears. I'd love to take you out there sometime, or you can check it out yourself it's out near Superior.
Dang, I just went through central AZ! I’ve been all over the southwest. I edit on a bit of a delay.
I’ll shoot you a message/comment if I’m out that way again!
@@ThirdPlanetRocks yes please do!
Fun. I can take you to some utah rock hounding places
Utah is on my list to go back to! I tried getting out to a few spots but got blocked by the cold
I hung out with that donkey for 2 days. I got stuck in the clay. He was there every morning and evening. I have pictures of him
They never quit and there’s a seemingly infinite amount of them there lol
@RockhoundingWithGriffin probably from the old miners after they left the mines. That's who I heard brought them there.
Wow
She’s heavy lol
Nice u need more subs
Next thing you know, I’ll be starting out these vids in my new Lamborghini.
🤣 jk. Thank you, though - that means a lot!
@@ThirdPlanetRocks Lol! Yeah you work hard even I work hard all small channels deserve better on yt 😂
Great job!! These are amazing? So is this lake pleasant area? If so how far from the lake? I’m trying to find rock spots out there- but not much luck-yet😢- also do I need 4wd to get around in this area? One more question- can u give me some advise on how u search for your spots? I’m having a hell of a time nailing down spots? I just got two books but the first 2 locations I tried to find- the maps kinda sucked!! Like no starting points??
It’s somewhat close to lake pleasant. I’m not from AZ but looks like a 90min drive between the spots.
I find spots usually through friends, Facebook, or local shops. This spot came from another YT channel, Rocks For Brains. She has awesome content about AZ spots.
Never had too much luck with books either. The more you are willing to hike/venture into places that others aren’t, the better things you will find 🙂
Like anything else, it’s about how hard you try.
Better hope it doesn’t rain 😂
I check the weather before I head into these flood zones. Deceptively dangerous spots if a good storm catches you!
I followed your directions explicitly on Google Earth maps, Burro Creek Crossing Road east from Hwy 93 doesn't extend 11-12 miles. At 4.8 miles the road splits. OPTION 1: The left split goes for one mile before you have to choose a hard 90° left turn or a hard 90° right turn. The hard left turn goes for two miles crossing a wash then dead ends in a big dirt circle. The hard right goes one mile in a round-about (indirect) way of getting to Sycamore Creek Road. So taking the left split at 4.8 miles from Hwy 93 to travel to your recommended 11-12 mile destination is not a possible option. OPTION 2: Taking the right split at 4.8 miles into Burro Creek Crossing from Hwy 93, the road then becomes named Sycamore Creek Road about a mile and a half down at 6.3 miles east of Hwy 93 on this path. At this point, Sycamore Creek Road splits (retaining its name for both road choices). The left split dead ends at a tower at mileage 6.7, so this choice is not the correct path. The right split continues, and at 7.8 miles from Hwy 93 Sycamore Creek Road splits again, one goes left, the other straight forward. The left split continues indefinitely north. The split that goes straight, and at your first recommended stop of 11 miles, takes you here: 34.58139326453538, -113.38735507929104 . Interesting to point out that at this location, there is a dirt road that crosses the path. Traveling to your other recommended stop of 12 miles, this is where you'll end up: 34.579355358140134, -113.375299333786 . Interesting to point out that at 11.7 there is some sort of structure on the south/right side of the road. Can you please clarify directions to indicate where to turn when the road splits each time? That would be so helpful. I'm doing all of the research I can for an upcoming trip, and found your video so valuable and helpful. I know I'm not the only one who'd appreciate these details! I also subscribed to RocksForBrains and thank you both for sharing these priceless places! I'm leaving on a huge AZ hounding trip in a couple of weeks, Burro Creek is at the top of my list. Thanks again!
Hi there - it’s been quite a while since I’ve been out here. When I was out here, I had no cell reception so I was ultimately guessing where I was going.
You’re correct, keep to the right on the first sycamore creek split. I took the path straight forward at the 2nd sycamore creek split.
Once you hit the greenish-yellow cliffs, that was where the chalcedony stopped. They’re very distinct and its where I ultimately turned around.
Happy hunting!
@@ThirdPlanetRocks Thank you so much for responding, I really appreciate the details. Heading out Saturday, hounding Burro Creek 4/11-13ish. Wish I had someone to go out there with me! Will respond after the trip and let you know if I had luck with your instructions. Either way, it will be a wonderful journey in a new place. Happy Hounding!
@CArocksNflocks Excellent! Have a great time out there. I barely scratched the surface of what’s all out there to find.
Good job. I’m in FL. We have no geology.
I might be getting relocated there, hopefully northern part so I can at least go up to GA for the rocks
Gainesville is wonderful. Limestone caves.
@@mikeleach4201 Didn’t know there were caves down there… hopefully gator-free lol
burro burrow 🙃 get it.. rockhounding, digging.. donkeys.. 😅🤷♂️✌️
And hey- drop Dona and get with Bertha oh big druzy juicy gurl!! She’s soooo amazing!
Donna is #1 in my heart
What do you do with the rocks you find?
I have to toss back quite a bit of what I show in the videos because… well, I live in an SUV lol.
Once I return home, I’m going to cut the my smaller finds and try to find a lapidary club or geology dept. with a saw big enough to handle Donna!
They have an epidemic of fleas and they jump on you is like massive fleas thousands of a jump on your because they've been attacking all the donkeys up there
That sounds awful, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t curious now lol
I love that area. I even found thundereggs there too! And so much interesting pastelite and agate and mushroom rhyolite. You did great! Was fun to watch the burros too. I find so many donkeys roaming AZ 🫏
Thanks! I love it out there. The entire southwest is my favorite spot in the country. Especially copper country in AZ/NM
@ThirdPlanetRocks yeah, I went to globe and Bisbee area. The copper silicates are awesome! I love az too, I'm from Oregon so we have cool minerals here as well
@@mitchgillilan Oh yeah you do - I got some obsidian from glass butte, and some pink limb casts from the site that closed recently. Drawing a blank on the name
@ThirdPlanetRocks Paulina area? I haven't been to the pink limbcast spot, I didn't know it closed. I live on west side of cascades so I'm just in carnelian agate country, along with some pet wood and jasper. Would love to go out east and do more exploring some day!
