Just a guy who reads way too much and has way to many opinions to keep to himself
Husband to the sensible one, father of daughters. Originally from Ireland but living in North Wales.
I’m reading Terry Pratchett’s full Discworld series, but as well as fantasy I read sci-Fi, horror, crime and thriller, contemporary literature and old classics.
I’ll give most things a go and I try and mix up my TBR as much as possible.
Weekly uploads that as well as the Discworld, will cover the other things I’m reading and let you know a bit more about me.
Thanks a for stopping by 😁
Be seeing you.

That's a fun video, some great categories! I know the feeling with Tom Clancy, I read Rainbow Six earlier this year and the amount of technical details about how guns work and what calibre of bullets is best in certain types of weather, etc staggering. I was skipping those as well to get back to the plot (which I really enjoyed). Hmm, seems I maybe have a possible answer to one of the questions if I would do this tag next week... 🙂
@@allthekingsbooks you definitely should then, be great to see your answers. Thanks a million for watching
I have never read The Blind Assassin, but I have loved several other books by her. The Screwtape Letters I really disliked, but I can see an importance in reading it just from the impact that book and author have had.
@@BonnieNicoleWrites well at least The Screwtape Letters is short, so even if I don’t like it, it shouldn’t overstay its welcome too long. 😁 I’m looking forward to trying Margaret Atwood, I still think I might try Oryx and Crake first.
@@TheBookThing Haha good point! I haven't read Oryx and Crake, but I would like to.
I adore Eric. Such a fun book
@@emosongsandreadalongs thanks for watching, it really is. I especially enjoy the micromanaging ruler of hell.
@@TheBookThing yeah, he was great. I loved when the "Aztec" god made his first appearance and wasn't quite what everyone expected
The dedication to Guards Guards sounds a bit like the book Redshirts by John Scalzi which is well worth a read. For Whom The Bell Tolls is my favourite Hemingway that I've read but I would have to be in the mood for it i imagine. I never made it to the Sanderson WoT books, but Jordan was alive when I read them to be fair, definitely not starting that one from the beginning again to catch up 😆 I need to read The Hunt For Red October one day, I love the film and I want to know how to drive a Russian submarine.
@@AaronReadABook I’ll definitely check out Redshirts. Any Tom Clancy is a commitment. It feels less like a novel and more like revision for an engineering degree.
I would definitely say the hardest book I ever read was “a clockwork orange” I feel like it wasn’t even written in English haha Great video Mark! 💕💕
Thanks a million Steph. I can see what you mean about Clockwork Orange. I read it years ago. I remember that for the first 4 or 5 chapters I hadn't a clue what was going on, then the slang clicked and when I read "droog" my brain said "buddy", couldn't get everything but I had enough context to get the gist. I had to go back and reread the start of the book but I really liked it after breaking through the wall. But there's definitely a wall.
@@TheBookThing yes I agree, such a fantastic and interesting story!
Hi, thanks for doing the tag. Will have to take a look at this Discworld content- how long are you giving yourself to completing it?
@@GenreBooks23 thanks a million for creating the tag! The original plan was to go through all 41 books in 2024, which is feasible but it would mean forgoing all other reading. I’d have been sick of Discworld by the end and I didn’t want that, I’m doing it for fun after all. I’m on book 17 right now and averaging about 2 a month recently. I reckon I’ll be done by this time next year, but I may sprint and get the last few done quicker.
Loved your answers!! I haven’t read Moby Dick but, from what you said I’d probably be skipping some bits of it too! 😂
@@Maeve_Ever_Books thanks so much. You set the bar high with your answers 😁 Moby Dick is actually really easy to skim because it’s almost two books in one and it’s divided by chapters. So one chapter may be about the story of Ahab’e pursuit of revenge but the next one is about the specific rope that is used to tie oarsmen to whaling boats. I’m not making that up. There’s literally a chapter about rope.
@@TheBookThing 🤣🤣🤣 I’d definitely skip the rope chapter. And thank you! I had a tough time with a couple of the questions but, I’m proud of the end result. 😊
@@Maeve_Ever_Books so you should be 😁
I need to start writing reviews in the cover that's funny. Evelyn Waugh is good but in a kind of mean way that is funny but also can be a bit dodgy, Decline and Fall I remember being very personal .
@@AaronReadABook it’s a good practice if you can keep them succinct 😁 I’m pretty curious about Waugh and it’s not a big book so I may well tackle it sooner rather than later.
Never let me go was such an interesting read for me, the more I think about it, I feel like the more I like it. Happy reading Mark💕 Ps. Please never visit my home, I would hate to have my books stolen hahaha 😂
Evelyn Waugh is a brilliant writer. Sad that you couldn't find Brideshead. It is by far his best. Screwtape Letters is a fun read. My favorite Lewis book, however, is The Great Divorce. Happy reading.
@@MichaelRomeoTalksBooks if I enjoy Decline and Fall and Screwtape Letters I’ll definitely pick up Brideshead and Great Divorce
One of my favourites, I always recommend this or Going Postal as the best first book. I like how the watch books always introduce new people and races to the world.
Yeah, me too. A lot of people say Going Postal is a great starting point, to be honest I wasn't a huge fan of the Moist von Lipwig books first time around, mostly due to him as a character. It'll be interesting to see if I feel different in a re-read.
You mentioned so many great books!!
@@Maeve_Ever_Books thanks, I was pretty lucky with my choices this year, I suppose a good starting point was reading things that plenty of people have said was good. 😊 Thanks a million for watching.
The seagull made me laugh!! Loved your reviews of these books. I’m going to add Wide Sargasso Sea to my future TBR. Loved your review of This is How You Lose the Time War!!
@@Maeve_Ever_Books the seagull did NOT make me laugh. 😤 Kinda does now though 😁
@@TheBookThing I’m sure in the moment it was quite frustrating. No doubt. But, it seems like a lot of people like the seagull. 😂
@@Maeve_Ever_Books well if I ever monetise I’ll be sure to give the seagull a cut 😂
@@TheBookThing 🤣🤣🤣
I really need to read the Bobiverse books. I was recommended them at least 3 years ago and I still haven’t tried them. 😅
Thanks a million for watching. I really enjoyed them. As you get deeper in it starts to feel a little bit like a strategy game where there are all of these things happening all over the map and it’s about dividing up attention and resources and time. But certainly the first one is well worth a read and although the others aren’t quite as good they’re still a nice bit of sci fi escapism.
@@TheBookThing Oh!! That sounds interesting! I’ll definitely give them a try soon.
Fun tag and fantastic view!! 11/22/63 and The Stand are on my list of books to read this year. I just started reading King late last year and I have a handful that I’m still hoping to read.
Thanks a million. 11/22/63 and The Stand are a bit intimidating because of how big they are, but they’re two of his best.
A group of swamp dragons is called an "embarrassment". Guards! Guards! may be the funniest novel I've ever read. He really hits his stride with this one (and I'd argue the next 2-3 Night Watch books).
@@AdamsLeftyBooks oh very much so, and possibly even more than 2-3. The watch books are my absolute favourite sub-series.
Terry Pratchet has a quintessentially English sense of humour - a wonderful gift to the world.
Couldn't agree more. The man is sorely missed
Beautiful spot! I love the outdoor format. This is my first time visiting your channel - MJ sent me! I will return! Best of luck on Booktube!
@@BeyondBooks-wt5il Hey, thanks a million, the outdoor format may not be sustainable once I get past what we call summer here in Wales 😁
I really enjoyed Bleak House as well. It surprised me how much I enjoyed it!
@@BonnieNicoleWrites the volume of seemingly unrelated characters is a bit of a hurdle, but once your past that it’s really fantastic
I started 11/22/63 last year but it was a soft DNF for me. I had just recently read another Stephen King and the vibe felt so similar I think I just needed to space them out. I do enjoy his writing style though (from the little I have read) so I do want to return to 11/22/63 at some point. Enjoy your July reading!
I get that. I enjoy King but then need a break from him after a while. Have to say 11/22/63 is one of his best in years.
@@TheBookThing Ooh that makes me more intrigued to get back to it!
Just added The Trees to my virtual TBR! I liked your comparison of the scalpel vs. the sledgehammer. I generally prefer more of a scalpel approach as well, but this definitely sounds worth a try.
@@BonnieNicoleWrites yeah I preferred the scalpel too, but overall the book was great, well worth the read. Hope you enjoy it 😁
Great wrap up. Rebecca is one of my faves and I absolutely loved The Trees. Going to check out some others of your recommendations 😊
@@RaynorReadsStuff thanks so much. They were my first Du Maurier and Everett books. Definitely be reading some more.
Found out about u through a book tuber I watch shouting you out 😊. I have been in two minds about the Wheel of Time books, but recently I just started the Warhammer 40k books and there are over 60 to that collection haha 😂. So for me, the length is not a problem but I have heard a lot of mixed reviews
Hey, thanks a million. There’s been some really kind booktubers that have sent folks my way. 60 Warhammer 40K books sounds like a hell of a commitment alright 😁 I like WOT but it can drag in a way that doesn’t have much to do with the length. By comparison to both those, Discworld is a breeze 😁
@TheBookThing If I decide to do Discworld I will pick it up next year because before the end of the year, I want to read the Game of Thrones series since I am a huge fan of the House of Dragons TV series. Also more than welcome you have a good channel
@@crimsonwhispersva2498 thank you so much. 😊 Game of Thrones is a frustrating read. Not because it isn’t good. But because it isn’t finished and it doesn’t seem likely to be.
CliffsDarkGems sent me ☺️
Cliff’s such a good dude 😁
You should check out Sometimes A Great Notion, it's a much harder book to read than Cuckoo's Nest because there is a lot of stream of consciousness and it's chunky, but it's his masterpiece. It was my favourite book when I was a teenager.
Cuckoo’s Nest was my first Kesey book but I’ll definitely go for another. By the way, on your recommendation I’m about halfway through A Morbid Taste for Bones. Really enjoying it, good shout.
@@TheBookThing The second one is really good too but I'm not beyond that yet, I've heard they get better and better.
Best wishes with what you choose to read. The only problem with watching other book tube channels is that it only increases the tbr! Happy reading to you!
@@ReadingIDEAS.-uz9xk thanks man, it really really does get bigger doesn’t it
Excellent list mate! I really need to give Slaughterhouse Five a re-read. The only Dickens I ever enjoyed was A Tale Of Two Cities. Rebecca has been on my tbr for ages, need to pick it up one day. One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest is another to seek out, I loved the movie. Nurse Ratchett is a chilling antagonist. 📚📚
Thanks man 😁 Louise Fletcher as Nurse Ratchet really is one one cinemas best villains. She just exudes a calm malevolence.
@@TheBookThing Well done Mate! A great win in South Africa! 👍 Your team were brilliant and, to be honest, I think the score flattered the boks!
Thanks mate and commiserations. It’s been a hell of a tour. Rugby is so much more interesting when the northern hemisphere teams can compete with the southern. Let’s see if we can get revenge on the kiwis in November 😁🤞
@@TheBookThing Absolutely! I do think we were well off the pace in the first half and that we need to make use of our opportunities. Ireland Defense was immense and translated pressure into points which was the difference, in my opinion. Good luck in November. I do think Ireland need more depth to be a force to be reckoned with.
@CliffsDarkGems hey, with a country our size and Rugby being the 4th or 5th most popular sport it’s amazing to me how much above our weight we’re able to punch.
I listened to this is how you lose the time war, and I think that was the wrong way to go into it because I don’t feel I full grasped what was going on. Can’t wait to read one flew over the cuckoos nest. Great video as always 💕
I struggled at the start with all of the sci-Fi (borderline magical) nature and abilities of the two protagonists and the whole world. I kinda gave up trying to work the logic out and just tried to enjoy the tone and the mood. It shone then.
Loved this Book!
I really enjoyed The Secret History. The Joe Abercrombie trilogy is fun but I didn't love it as much as most. Annihilation I really liked too, and the film but it's not as good as Roadside Picnic which must be the influence. I've not read any of those discworlds so am interested to see how you find them.
@@AaronReadABook I’m enjoying Secret History so far and looking forward to the others. I may be the wrong reviewer on the Discworld’s, I’m inherently biased. 😂
Good luck with the reads! You've reminded me that I should finish up the Southern Reach trilogy. I quite liked Annihilation, Thanks for sharing.
Thanks man, I’m really looking forward to checking the Southern Reach
Great video! I am trying to change from the typical tbr approach to a "Pile of Possibilities." This works better for me as it takes away the pressure of reading everything and allows me to do some mood reading. I loved 11/22/63, definitely top tier King, in my opinion. Annihilation is on my radar, will be interesting to hear your thoughts. Happy Reading!
Yeah I reckon it’s a wiser approach going with a pile. I’m nearly don’t with 11.22.63 and I have agree it’s pretty top tier.
If you don’t love 11/22/63 I will not survive haha
@@onceuponabookishsteph about 3/4 done and it’s looking good so far 😁
Loving the seagull interaction 😂. Great wrap up. Loved your selection of books for June. Agree wholeheartedly with your take on I Have No Mouth. Really must get round to reading Babel. 😊
You should’ve seen the phrases I used towards the seagull that I cut 😤 Yeah the Harlan Ellison was a big let down for me. The sad thing is it really didn’t need to be. It could’ve been an absolute classic, but whether he was trying to be edgy or just was a misogynist I don’t know. Thanks a million for watching 😁
i had a lag spike that made it pause amusingly at "They said it couldn't be done; they said I couldn't read."😂

I’m so glad you, paperback journeys, and I all agree that The Dark Forest is amazing 😄 And yes Bobiverse is very happiness-inducing
@@valliyarnl thanks for watching. I reckon Dark Forest shows up quite a lot in people’s favourite sequels, we just happened to read the trilogy around the same time 😁
Your intro had me cracking up! Haha Also I don’t want to take credit for this videos background, but I do remember mentioning that I loved the outdoor vibe! Great wrap up. Great job selecting all these books in your usual way (this looks good let’s pick it up) hahaha (I’m joking btw in case you can’t tell) I want to read more Sanderson but I’m not convinced his newest ones are the way to go. I loved the mistborn series though!
@@onceuponabookishsteph Thanks as always for watching and commenting, you can totally take credit for me continuing the outdoor vibe, just as long as you’re willing to take the blame when I start trying to do these outside in a deluge 😂 Actually if you want to read more Sanderson, Tress isn’t a bad option. It’s standalone and doesn’t rely on prior reading, it just has Easter eggs if you have. Other than Tress you can try Warbreaker. Despite the title that makes it sound like a 90’s PlayStation game, it’s about two sisters who end up with different destinies than they expect and is at its heart a love story.
Great Wrap-Up! I really enjoyed The Bell Jar! Sadly, Sylvia Plath committed suicide either just before or after the novel was published. I still really want to read I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream, will hopefully pick it up shortly. The misogyny does sound bad. Unfortunately I found Who Goes There a little underwhelming in comparison to The Thing. Good Job!
@@CliffsDarkGems Thanks a million for commenting as usual. Yeah, I don’t think the relationship with Ted Hughes helped much with her mental health. Be interesting to get your perspective on the Harlan Ellison, even if it’s not a book I’d recommend. I agree about the comparison with The Thing. But The Thing is a masterpiece, I was just pleasantly surprised by how much of the film was actually in the original text considering it had been written in the 30’s
I'm about to read my first Percival Everett (James) but assuming it is indeed as good as I'm hearing, I'll be wanting to read more by him! I'll have to look up the one you mentioned.
@@BonnieNicoleWrites I’ve got James on my reading list for this year but I’ve been kinda thinking that I need to read the Mark Twain first. I read Huck Finn years ago but don’t really remember it. @@TheBookThing I had read Huck Finn in high school but didn't remember much either. I listened to not quite half of it on audio last month and I think the rest I'll just read a synopsis online. 😂 That's good to know about The Trees! I'll keep that in mind.

OMG!! I am so honoured that you mentioned me in this video. Thank you so much!! 💕 Also, i am obsessed with this background, please film more videos like this, weather pending of course. And okay, just for you i will read one flew over the cuckoos nest!
Oh you are more than welcome and thank you for providing the inspiration. I’ll do my best to film outside more but I’m afraid we may have already had the Welsh summer. It was quite a long one this year. It was nearly a full week. June 23rd to 27th. I hope you enjoy One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Neat. There’s no getting away from the fact that there’s things in there that just aren’t acceptable today, but if can accept it as a work of its time, it’s genuinely great.
Hi Mark. Great video and beautiful landscape! I'm coming here after a shout-out by Cliff's Dark Gems and am a new subscriber. Even though I didn't much care for A Confederacy of Dunces, I like the content. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks a million @@Michael_Wertenberg for watching and subscribing and I’m glad you liked it. Cliff is such a good dude. lol. That’s kinda my point about Confederacy of Dunces, people have wildly different experiences with it so how can anyone possible say if it’s objectively good or not. There’s plenty of highly regarded prizewinning, books I can’t stand. It’d be boring if we were all the same.
A Confederacy of Dunces and Catch 22 are two of my favorite books.
@@MichaelRomeoTalksBooks thanks for watching, they are wonderful aren’t they ?
How to escape a desert island vol 1 to 5 surely 😂
