• ROUTE GUIDE
This is a short hike from Lochinver to Achmelvich. It takes you over the cnoc and lochan landscape typical of Assynt in the North-West Highlands of Scotland. It finishes at Achmelvich and its wonderful shell sand beach. In winter with the north wind blowing and the snow and hail falling horizontally it feels particularly wild and raw.

• MOUNTAIN SAFETY Remember that hiking and mountain climbing can be dangerous. The videos on my channel are for entertainment only (other than where specified). Always prepare well and be willing to abandon a trip if it becomes dangerous due to weather or unexpected trail conditions. If you are new to hiking and the great outdoors it's always a good idea to go with a guide or a more experienced companion. And remember - give the wildlife some space, leave no trace, go quietly and enjoy it out there!
• A word on DRONES I know how annoying it can be to hear a drone whizzing about when you are trying to enjoy the peace and solitude of wild places. I'm also aware of the potential to disturb wildlife with them. I always avoid flying the drone when there are other hikers around. It's one of the reasons I tend to hike at less popular times of day and in mid-week and I avoid using the drone if I do see others nearby. I never fly a drone towards wildlife or where birds are likely to be nesting.

    Beautiful Jim. We went round the wee mad road to Clachtoll Beach when in that area and it was stunning but didn’t have the mountain views that you had there. Suilven looking just majestic! We’ll be up that way in June so a trip to this beach looks like a must.

    I think that being in, on and around hills and mountains is all that matters. I don't think you always have to make the tops, but the summits obviously are special places. I prefer to not aim for them, but to just go and explore, and at some point i'll decide whether to go for a top, or stay on the slopes, that way there's no disappointment. You had amazing conditions for the hills you were in and on...just not on top of...worth it? 100%

    • @Jim_Manthorpe-hiking
      @Jim_Manthorpe-hiking 6 днів тому

      I needed this comment. Thanks Steve. I sometimes think, when I’m filming these UA-cam videos, that I need to get to the summit so that the film has a conclusion. But if I start obsessing about that I’ll forget about what’s really important; just being out there. You’re dead right - there’s so much more to the mountains than the view from the top.

    Beautiful scenes in that opening minute. And the rest. The only answer has to be, ALWAYS. No matter how cold and dark the morning, putting on frozen boots and frost stiffened clothes, the older one becomes the more tempting it is to stay home. To walk on pristine snow with the mountain hare on a winters day is always worth it. Cheers man

    Tough going but a beautiful film as always Jim. Stayed in Kylesku, a couple of years ago, being overlooked by two peaks of the Quinag. Wind tunnelling down the lochs the whole week, so at least wind conditions didn’t seem too bad in the video.

    Padjelantaleden goes all along the west (!) side of Sarek (not the north), starting in Kvikkjokk and ending in Ritsem, there's a small part covering the north side, but over all, it's in the west for the entire length of Sarek. After crossing Akkajaure by boat or helicopter, it usually is pretty easy to find the Padjelantaleden, no idea, where you had bee dropped off, so that you had to look for the trail, pretty much you're usually dropped off directly on the trail. In my opinion it's pretty easy to find Ruotesvagge, too. When leaving Padjelantaleden between two bridges,just follow along river Sjnjuvtjudisjahka. Since it is the most popular route to start or end a Sarek traverse, there's a path leading to Kisuris Kotan, the old Sami hut and further on into Ruotesvagge. It is only allowed to light campfires in exhibited fireplaces within the world heritage Laponia, this rule applies for Sarek region, so it's not allowed to light a fire wherever you want. Leave no trace!

    • @Jim_Manthorpe-hiking
      @Jim_Manthorpe-hiking 13 днів тому

      I think I was referring to the north because at that point of my description the Padjelantaleden is to the north. But you are right that the majority of it is to the west. We were dropped off at the south side of the Vuojatädno river mouth. We weren't lost. It's where we wanted to be. We were out of season and there were no scheduled boats running. The guy we met with the boat recommended it as a good spot and it wasn't far through the forest to join the trail. I agree with you that you shouldn't light fires wherever you want. As a former countryside ranger I am very familiar with the leave no trace principle.
