We have a 2023 Golf R 20th anniversary edition with DSG. I agree that this is a great car. It is extremely fast for a 4 cylinder. It is a German autobahn car, so it's hard to say how fast you are going unless you peek at the speedometer. I have clocked 0 to 60 in less than 4.2 seconds, not bad for a 2.0 liter engine car. AWD is great. I also agree that the infotainment system is great, and every reviewer has made a big deal of it. I just think they all tried to find something wrong with the car to beat on, and that became the go-to. Some of those reviwets get paid to sell other competitive brands, so they harp on whatever everyone else is harping on to sell their brand and make money. I give our Golf R a 9.5 out of 10. We love it and enjoy driving it.

I have a '15 BRZ which shares many of these issues. I added sound deadening material to the roof, doors, back seat quarter panels, and trunk. The roof is much quieter when it's raining and the doors, back seat, and trunk don't rattle when the stereo is turned up, which brings up the speakers: the OEM speakers may be the cheapest Made-in-China speakers I've ever seen and they are HEAVY ferrite magnet speakers. I replaced mine with high quality neodymium speakers which actually saved 20 lbs. over the stock speakers and countered out the added weight of the sound deadening material. Caveat: it seems that each model year and trim level have a variety of sound system designs, so replacing the speakers while retaining the head unit may be a true research project that will require learning about band pass filters and crossovers. You will need the wiring diagram for your model year and trim level; don't just buy the speakers that fit each hole.

I owned the original R, 2004 MK4 R32 VR6, two doors six on the floor, sunroof, and no computer nannys to drive the car. I did the driving how I wish I still had my R 😢

What about getting in and out of the car? It sits awfully low, which most folks are not used to nowadays. That is a concern of mine and for my passenger (girlfriend). It would not be a concern if I were in my 20's, but I am not. The other big problem I see with this car is finding one to buy, especially without $2k of dealer add-ons to run the price up. I have also read that the insurance is very expensive relative to other cars. Good job but I will add those.

Just bought 2024 golf r white dsg. I have 0 issues with anything. Yes the lack of buttons are annoying for the first 30 seconds - just like smart phones ditching buttons? You just get used to it. Also once I have climate set and my music? I don't really fuck with anything just start up and go.. I do how ever have the same paint issues with chips but I own a 2022 supra and that thing is fucked with rocks so just par the course it seems with new vehicles lmao I also use wireless carplay android version? And it's legit perfect never had a single issue. Maybe the issue is your using a shit fuck phone lol also the price of the car is perfect. People complain but look around whay other car you getting like this? 10k less you get a wrx which is fully made of plastic and the engine will blow by just looking st it. Those new FA motors are shit. I have a hard time finding something else in this price range unless you go american but seriously.... 😅😅😅

You can’t go wrong with either VW GLI or GTI and Golf R. All of these cars our amazing in their own class.

It's probably a trade off of adding an extra year of bumper to bumper vs power train. I've learned many car brands quality control has gone down with more complex cars the past few years. The electronics are probably the biggest risk. Also many dealerships don't properly honor warranties.

Totally depends on what you get into after you sell it.. get into a mid-engine Porsche and you'll forget the 86 real quick, lol. If you have to compromise and only have 1 vehicle, the new twins are good (my biggest complaint is the Logitech clutch pedal).. Ive owned a ton of compromise vehicles.. mainly hot hatches and hot sedans.. Now.. i have a mutli-car garage.. So far.. ND1 Miata Club w/BnB and a FiST.. seeking to add something musclely and maybe something with awd down the road..

I like the sound of the Hyundai and Kia warranties but hear stories of dealers fighting warranty claims.

The GR86 warranty is a bit weird. Are you sure it's not covered by the 15 year warranty like in the rest of the world?

The value of your MK8 R is going to drop significantly once the MK8.5 R comes to dealerships.

Wow I had an 02 bugeye I drove it like I stole it from 12 miles to over 180,000 I anti friction treated it with additive and for the last 5 yrs or so changed the oil once a yr with mobile 1 extended never let it warm up just drove it till after 16+ yrs the head gaskets finally failed Original turbo

If you go back to right after Dieselgate happened, VW was desperate to bring people into their dealerships so they began offering a killer warranty. I believe it was something like 6 or 7 years, and even covered you if you weren't the first owner. Don't know how long that lasted, but it was pretty great.

I have a '23 Challenger Scat Pack Shaker edition with 6spd. The difference between "the car driving you" with an automatic and you interacting with and driving the car is huge. If you're buying a car to actually drive, get the manual. I just drove it from Clearwater to Atlanta (which is a constant, gradual uphill pull) and i averaged 24.2 mpg and running around the back roads and city put here in a semi-rural area is about 20 mpg. My '22 got just slightly less. I also used to live in Utah (Ogden area) and RWD in the snow is a challenge but the solution is to *turn around* and back out of parking lots and sticky spots! 😊 I had a '74 Road Runner with a pro-stock 340 in it and I got around fine, watching others be stuck while I backed out of trouble. 😊 (And it's "RPM," revolutions per minute, not RPMs, revs per "minutes." 😊 😆 Nice car.

So I totally disagree with your comments as a mk8R owner albeit a UK specc'd car with dsg as standard. The piano black is part of the design and like most things you hust have to be careful not to scratch it. I mean you wabt a hill start thay allows the car to roll? If you want more noise then change the exhaust and go full fast and furious if thats what you want. The car is designed for a specific market and isnt cheap so they know who their aiming it at i guess

You can damage your vehicles oil pump by using thicker oil it overworks the system and heating issues for the pump also potentially will result in oil deprivation throught your engine with synthetic oil its not that serious use mobile 1 quality oil and dealer weight said to use!!

i have a 22 WRX GT, yes its a cvt but the electronic suspension makes the ride much better and it still rips through corners. yea the hood flexes while driving but my brain tunes it out. infotainment is laggy but liveable. 7000 miles and the AC still works great in the texas summer

With that, if you were to choose a PPF today, would you still go with SunTek or do you think there’s a better PPF? Note: I’m just now seeing where you sold your Mustang.

I have a '22 86, still totally stock. Havent felt the need to modify it for more power, I didn't buy it for that. Currently at a little over 23k miles. It's my daily, and my hope is to basically keep it. At some point I do want a manual Supra beside it, but I can't envision wanting to sell it.

Don't change the oil viscosity, and break your warranty! Follow basic turbo advice. All turbos like this whether they are turbo diesels big rig or a twin turbo porsche: 1. DO change the oil frequently. 2. let it Warm it up a minute 3. let it idle a minute after you drove it hard after you park it. 4. Lugging the engine is always bad, but it is worse for a turbo. These 4 tips feed enough oil to the turbo and improve it's life span. When a turbo blows, so goes the engine. Warranty: 5. Don't try performance air intakes, or modify exhaust with j-pipes, because they will break the drive train warranty. Only do engine component mods if you can afford a new engine and don't care about warranties. Only change the tune if you can afford a new engine. Don't get sucked into the hype, flat 4 Subaru engines are not indestructible, and are not an optimal design. WRX is not about being optimal for the paved road. It is now an evolution upon a design that thrived in specific set of off-road conditions. It is a fun car, and has a lot of utility value. I don't know if it is necessarily a "sports car", and I don't care. I must be the target market.

You really nailed Subaru experience. It’s why I own a 22 WRX Limited and a 24 BRZ tS. Rawness in the driving experience and my local Subaru dealers offer exceptional customer service. I almost traded my WRx in for a GR Corolla last month and backed out specially due to all your reasons. Now I’m trying to decide if I want to order the WRX tS when it’s available.

Great video man! Figured I'd respond to your points having owned a 2023 Golf R. 1. I agree about the key fob. Accidently turned on the horn several times in my pocket. 2. Cupholders weren't an issue for me 3. I agree I hate the piano black too on the interior. The exterior piano black looks nice imo. 4. I agree, exhaust could be much louder especially since it's valved. 5. I agree, sound system should be much better for being the "upgraded" stereo. 6. N/A I had a DSG 7. I had issues with my wireless carplay disconnecting too, and the front sensors randomly going off while at stop lights. Thanks for sharing your realisitc thoughts on the Golf R. Overall great vehicle, but nothings perfect.

No car is perfect. Glad you pointed out those things you didn't like. Impossible to cater to everyone. I have a 7.5 R. It's been a great car and I am tempted to get the Mk8 or maybe wait for the Mk8.5. I love the look and the power difference. I've kept up with maintenance, Oil, DSG, Haldex, tires, filters, sparkplugs, brakes. I have a Lapiz Blue but wish VW would make more colors (spektrum), that would flip me for sure into a new Golf R.

The HK may not be great but if the sliders are in a sort of smile shape it sounds a lot better. It does have niggles that should have been resolved before launch.

2024 White DSG GOLF R. I have it since November last year. Zero problems, great vehicle. My 2024 BMW X3M is faster, but now with stage 1 low torque APR on GOLF R they are close.

i hate my mk8 golf gtd dsg🙁 the seats squeeze my body out and hurts my back. i find it very uncomfortable with no thigh extension.

Brand new, needed a replacement steering wheel, dropped a cylinder, rear tyre sensor faulty from new, up volume button not working, centre screen black half the time, in reverse screen usually blank, radar cruise wouldn’t work half the time and kept beeping every 30 seconds (vw could not turn off beep) front windows would sometimes go up instead of down…. VW nz aftercare service shockingly poor 👎👎👎

Kinda first world issues, wouldn’t you say? Also, doesn’t that subwoofer take up too much cargo space? I dunno. I think many people would trade places with someone who can afford a nice $45K hot hatch that does 0-60 in 4 seconds? Gratitude my friend! No vehicle is perfect! Man there's a lot of similarities between this and the GTI that key fob thing is the biggest one for me, I set the alarm off a lot! And most people don't realize just how good the sound system is inside of the VB WRX with the Harmon Kardon, to this day that is still one of the best sound systems I've ever heard in any car.
