  • The Subaru WRX is a dying formula. But at the same time, I applaud it. Watch this video to see why I think the Subaur WRX is the last mechanical stand.

I drove nothing but WRX's from 2002 to 2021. Then I bought a 2021 Outback for a change of pace. I loved the Outback, but after driving it for 2 years, I felt an irresistible yearning for the WRX's manual transmission along with the confident, nimble handling. I might have got a BRZ or GR86--even test drove one--but for New England winters, I know I made the right choice with the 2023 WRX's all wheel drive and decent ground clearance. Now, I can commute and have fun year-round with the same vehicle. While most everyone else is panicking over the threat of every winter storm, I am literally praying for snow in the forecast. 😂

Warning: I'm rambling in this comment. LOL! I love your content, dude. Really do. Thank you for creating for the community.
I bought my 23 WRX Premium on October 17. I've put a little over 3k miles on it in the last couple months of ownership. I look for reasons to drive my car. And I couldn't agree more that the shifter feel is just different. Mine came from the factory with the STI Short Shifter, and I love the feel of it although I don't think it's worth the price if you're actually paying for it. I negotiated the price of mine out of the deal as it wasn't something I wanted to spend $600 on. In my opinion, it's the shifter Subaru should have shipped the car with just as a baseline. At least on the Premium trim and up. I love the way it sounds. I love the power in stock form. I don't need anything faster or more torquey than what it offers out of the box. I've got an exhaust at the top of my wishlist and a few cosmetic updates, but mechanically, the car will stay stock.
I love that Subaru offers a lot of 'aftermarket' support with things like the STI front lip, side skirts, trunk spoiler. I like that you can add on the Sport Grille and LED Fog Bezels as a factory option so they're lumped in with the warranty, and don't give the techs cause for concern the way an aftermarket part would. And I like that, within reason, Subaru allows small modifications to the car in the third-party sense. Things like an exhaust, or shift stop.
A few nitpicky gripes I have with the car, Subaru, and, honestly, car manufacturers in general is the lack of continuity across models and even trim levels. It irks me that in order to get the blinkers in the mirrors, I'd have had to spend another $5-6k on a Limited trim when blinkers in mirrors come standard on a lot of other base model cars, and really is a safety feature, not a luxury feature. I don't like that Subaru reserves the better suspension and seats for the GT trim without allowing it to be an add-on for lower trim models. I love the HK audio, but I have zero use for a sunroof, and wish I could have deleted that from the factory, but kept the HK sound. Why those are a package deal, I'll never understand. It doesn't make sense to me why their other cars all get the big screen, but the base model WRX gets the weird split screen thing. Just use one head unit across the platform. Speaking of the infotainment, I don't get why the WRX is sort of bastardized when it comes to infotainment updates. I'm an iPhone user so I get the best experience with Apple CarPlay, but the Android folks are stuck with the half-screen. I think the hatred for the touch HVAC controls is a little overblown. Most cars are this way now, and I don't interact with the HVAC enough for it to be an issue. And I'd like more customization of the screens (both the center screen on the dash as well as the infotainment screen).
All-in-all, though, I think the WRX, especially this new one with the 2.4 is an excellent car for the money. Having test-driven the Integra A-Spec, Golf GTI, and Civic SI, the WRX is the best daily driver of the bunch, and really and truly is in a class of one: Turbo, AWD, Manual. There isn't another car like it, and my guess is this is the final generation of the WRX as a purely gas engine, manual transmission, enthusiast sport sedan.

Great summary and feedback! Are they really charging $600 for the STI short throw shifter?

  • @natas6941

I couldn't agree more. The WRX is just .. different than anything else in the category. It's not a drag car so Subaru never really needed to go crazy with HP, there are plenty of Stangs out there for that. The WRX though just does it all. Handles, goes fast, can drive in all weather conditions, has a low depreciation rate, last a long time (not modded).
It's such a notable car that everyone with $50k+ cars spend so much time trying to talk down on a $30k car lol. I think it's a win that a ,$30k car is in the same conversation as $50k+ cars. 😎
Hopefully the EPA slows down on the regs and backs off of the push for EV so Subaru can keep delivering more generations of this car with a MANUAL.

Only thing I can wish for would be better (maybe heavier as well) steering feel in the new WRX. It's not giving you enough information. Too light. The engine is fricken fantastic (and that's saying something coming from an STI).

Great video man and I completely agree apart from the wonky shifting on the WRX. I am a 2012 STI owner and I went ahead and bought a 2023 WRX for my daily and I freaking love it. All it needed for me was a new drivetrain package from Cobb🥳

A nice video Thank you, i will be taking delivery of my new 2024 WRX silver Sport CVT in January, it's still on the water and due in Australia ( NSW) christmas day. This will be my 5th new WRX, my first two were manual, and my last three have been CVT,, the CVT is brilliant around town in heavy traffic use, and perfect on our long distant trips here in Australia due to the higher gearing, with lower fuel use, using 95 Premium oct. On long trips over a thousand Kms return i have no problem returning on average 35 + MPG at 100/120 kmph. My 4 WRX have been totally reliable, service intervals done when due at my local Subaru dealer. My cars have been left with NO modifications. They will be so reliable if driven with respect and serviced when due. With this new 2024 i feel 12 month servicing is a long time between oil changes,so i will judge this over the next 12 months. I have considered other makes of cars, Then, i keep coming back to Subaru due to its built in safety, wonderful handling, and that brilliant all wheel drive 👍 Au

I have a 23 wrx base and thought I would enjoy her for years to come! Im considering trading her in for a manual scat pack challenger because the drivers seat is so uncomfortable for me.The seat is very narrow for me and the bottom bolsters dig into my thighs and the top bolsters dig into my ribs. It’s a lot of fun to drive but not when you’re in pain ! Im 60 years young and this is my second Subaru WRX, I also have a 16 STi which Im currently driving daily while my 23 WRX sits .Thanks

While I do pity that Subaru dropped STI for current gen, I still appreciate their effort to keep this old formula still going. I think WRX is probably one of the last manual transmissions to forego on assists like auto rev match and it is definitely part of the charm.
Despite the negative reviews and press (some earned due to body cladding) I hope it continues to sell well so they can make as many of these cars as possible. My 06 STI is at 160k and still going so I don’t have a need for one but it is good to see the name plate carried on, unlike the Evo.
I also like the fact Subaru was one of the few mfg to not mark up their cars in the recent years, so extra points for them.

I will say... was a REALLY tough decision for me. I had been researching the BRZ for MONNNNNTTTHHHSS, and test drove a GR86 and a few used BRZ's. When I test drove a brand new BRZ and WRX back to back, the power delivery of the WRX was just so much better (IMO), that as much as I absolutely adored the seats and interior, and the better handling of the BRZ, I went with the WRX. I had fantastic deals below MSRP on both car's as well. The BRZ, just needed (or FELT like it needed) more oomph. I still love the BRZ, and still want one, so may try to get an older model at some point.

If you want that interior buy the mustang? 🤔 Just makes a little more sense than wishing for something that won't happen.
WRX's have always had simple, straight forward interiors for a family. The population who buy this car, buy it for practicality, reliability, and affordability.
I absolutely hate digital RPM and speedometer gauges. I wish they would stop that trend, hence why I bought the WRX in the first place.
This whole video was about the ethos of the WRX, which you seem to have missed
