The mystery of the Jokers Tunnel
What was the purpose of the Jokers Tunnel? Dug 10km south of Yalgoo in the 1890s, very small amounts of gold were ever discovered considering it's over 100m long. Was the person who dug it a hopeful idiot? Or is there more to this story? Some say it was an elaborate scam and the hopeful idiot was actually a rich investor in England. Either way, this is a fantastic tourist spot to visit if you're ever travelling along the Geraldton-Mount Magnet Road

Perth's first Train-Tram connection since 1958!
Переглядів 18 тис.28 днів тому
Perth has a new train-tram connection! Thanks to funding from the state government, Metronet built a 1.3km extension to the tramway in Whiteman Park (operated by the Perth Electric Tramway Society). You can now catch the train on the new Ellenbrook line, and transfer onto a tram! Perth Electric Tramway Society: www.petswa.org.au/ Their Facebook Page: perth.electric.tramway.society ...
Walgoolan & the Great Emu War of 1932
Переглядів 7 тис.Місяць тому
You've likely seen videos about the Great Emu War of 1932, but did you know the location is driveable from Perth? One of Western Australia's most famous internet stories - where soldiers attempted to cull tens of thousands of migrating emu's with machine guns (and lose) - happened just off the Great Eastern Highway in a small town called Walgoolan. The town of Campion was also affected, but the...
What happened to the Claise Brook?
Переглядів 52 тис.2 місяці тому
Everyone knows of the location, Claise Brook in East Perth, but did you know it was named after a real brook of the same name? Discovered by Europeans in the 1820s, the brook was integral to the area. Over the decades, the brook hosted a public abattoir turned convict depot, a mulberry plantation for silkworms, a homeless camp and finally a recreational ground called Haig Park. As the area grad...
The Stone Huts of Lake Austin
Переглядів 8 тис.3 місяці тому
15 minutes south of Cue, you can find "The Island" on Lake Austin. A gold miners and prospectors dream since the 1890s, the Austin township was also established along the modern-day Great Northern Highway. While quite small compared to nearby towns such as Cue and Mount Magnet, it's believed to have survived until the 1960s. While there isn't much of the townsite to see these days (although we'...
The Trams of Kalgoorlie & Boulder
Переглядів 8 тис.3 місяці тому
Much like Perth and Fremantle, Kalgoorlie/Boulder had its own tram network. This operated from 1902 to 1952, nearly spanning 50 years of service! Let's delve into the history, how it operated, and discover what it was like to catch a tram during the gold rush. As a bonus, I'll try to find what remains of the network and trams in the modern day. Website: www.brendansodyssey.com Email: brendansod...
Royalty in Halls Head - The Castle Fun Park
Переглядів 11 тис.4 місяці тому
Built by George Kaspar and his son, Ron in the early 1980s, this castle was originally for the Halls Head Estates (just south of Mandurah). By 1988, however, it was part of the Castle Fun Park. This was well known and fondly remembered by many in Perth as it was a popular stopping point on trips down South. These days, it's unfortunately more known as an abandoned ruin - but let's delve into th...
Kookynie - Not Quite a Ghost Town
Переглядів 9 тис.5 місяців тому
Kookynie, several hours north of Kalgoorlie, proliferated thanks to the discovery of gold in the 1890s. Within several decades, however, the mines started to close as they became untenable and the townsite shrank. What was once 400 buildings (including 7 licenced hotels) is now a handful of scatted brick ruins. It's not a ghost town, though! Approximately a dozen people still live here and ther...
Was this the WORLD'S smallest bank?
Переглядів 6 тис.6 місяців тому
In the small town of Shackleton, about 200km east of Perth, you will find what was (probably) the smallest bank in the world. Sounds crazy, but I couldn't any information to suggest otherwise. The structure was originally transported from Bruce Rock and was initially a branch of the Agricultural Bank. Over the decades, it has served as a branch for the Bank of New South Wales, R&I, and lastly, ...
The Ongoing Tale of Subiaco Oval
Переглядів 31 тис.6 місяців тому
Subiaco Oval has been a home to football players for over 115 years. Its had many physical changes around it over the decades, particularly with the rise of the WAFL and later the AFL, but the oval has remained the same. With the demolition of Domain Stadium, I go through its extensive history, changes and discover what remains today. Website: www.brendansodyssey.com Email: brendansodyssey@gmai...
Atlantis Marine Park - What Remains?
Переглядів 26 тис.7 місяців тому
Opening in Two Rocks on Boxing Day 1981, the Atlantis Marine Park was a unique theme park for Perth including all sorts of performing sea life, primarily dolphins. This story goes deeper, however, involving Alan Bond's Yanchep Sun City and the prime times of the 80s, followed by the downturn of the 90s. Even though it was mostly demolished in the early 90s, there are still remains 30 years late...

Burswood was once an island?
Переглядів 30 тис.8 місяців тому
Before Burswood was a peninsula, it was an island. And before it was an island... it was a peninsula. I always wondered why Burswood was labelled as an island on old maps. After some research, it turns out it's because of Perth's first-ever infrastructure project: a canal. The Burswood Canal (or "Old Burswood Canal" as it's usually referred to) was constructed in the 1830s to cut off a difficul...
I rode Perth’s last tram
Переглядів 9 тис.8 місяців тому
I was lucky enough to be offered a tour of the headquarters and workshops for the Perth Electric Tramway Society in Whiteman Park. Operating since the 80s, they offer the unique experience of riding vintage trams on a purpose-made route throughout the park. During the tour, I was given insight into their extensive tram collection, the process of restoring and maintaining the cars and additional...

DAMN you can still see out of the windows on that train. Or should I say COULD... the video is 3 weeks old so those windows are scuffed now :D
Love your work
I remember going here a few times around 1018 when the zig zag road was still open, it was pretty cool but didn't know the history at the time other than that it was an old railway line to a quarry.
I can remember my father loading his semi carting bagged cement to Learmonth Exmouth from cement works also he was the first to take a backhoe and site shed to build the town of Dampier/Karratha for GBC😮

Painting brick can be very damaging to brick as the brick can not breath and if water gets inside it will decay faster.
Brillant,, well done Brendan
You videos give me nostalgia. They remind of these informative ABC videos we used to watch in primary school in the library 😂
No doubt they've influenced me
Was here in 1997, infested with bats.
Thanks
Thank you
Wow amazing video. I barely thought id care about it but was entertained
There is a scam Copper mine from a similar time near me, in the south of Adelaide!
It was a scam. wages to dig was as good as gold in those days ✌️
Nice video, we went up there a few years ago, a good walk through.
P.G. Wodehouse stories are full of such scams at a distance.
the 1950s of perth railways seems really interesting to me. by the 60s and 80s, most of it would be reduce to the 3 heritage lines, but its still a modernish period that people would remember
Favourite channel on the site mate
Thanks
I saw something like this this back in 1998, but I remember it being through the top of a hill.
Should have turned left at Albuquerque.
i remember those cartoons.
Been in there but bats had the wife screaming in panic!
my dad told us kids the story about how him and his siblings used a tunnel as shortcut to school in the wimmera. one day a bat got stuck in his sister's hair and they had to shave her head. so after that they always wore hats in the tunnel.
Poor bats! lol
Graphite Road in Manjimup was named for a find of graphite in the area. There were attempts to float companies in England and the US to exploit it, apparently boasting of how the material could be sent down the Blackwood river for export. The Blackwood river being of course an overgrown log filled small river very prone to seasonal water levels!
The Donnelly river is closer, I wonder why they said the Blackwood! I always wondered what the story was behind those mines and wanted to find them. I did find fools gold in the river near the mine area though!
The story I was given by the old timers was that a reasonable amount of specimen stone found on the top of the hill and the idea was to tunnel through the hill till the reef was found and then stope the ore out. I have seen the same at Nullagine where Windalia took the side of the away in 1980 leaving the reef exposed. About 400 ounces had been removed from the top of the hill in the historical past. There was no gold in the rest of the reef!! I have been through the tunnel and seen no sign of a structure holding gold. The fact 3Kg came from the tunnel may suggest the gold is not in a reef structure. Broken hill is a prime example where the good stuff was removed and no one realized the rest of the hill held fabulous riches.
It was a shortcut to the pub
love ya work mate, please drop the tackey abc anchor style lingo tho
Thanks Brendan, I'm just slowly researching my great grandfathers time as a supervisor at mount morgans near laverton in the 1890s. I've read about jokers tunnel before and it's nice seeing that countryside albeit a bit further south and west of where my g-grandfather was
Most likely it was a scam. I heard of other scams of this time where the scammers would purchase a handful of valuable ore, maybe scatter a bit around the fake mine site, and then convince investors they found all this ore on site and they need more funds to keep exploring. Once the investors are convinced and hand over the money in echange for a cut of the finds, the scammers vanish.
Reminds me of a mining project in Salzgitter-Bad, Germany. A mine on a hill, being dug out for hundreds of meters for years, until the unfortunate conclusion that there wasn't the expected salt.
The old shotgun shell full of gold trick hey?
Yalgu is still populated and theyre working on a new Homeswest building , so Government workers and their international teams of computer mercenaries can feel safe in the Homeswest Office ...a stones throw from the ABC ( regional studio )while some aboriginals of Geraldton mope around drunk yet honourable enough round town and in one fiery case that went on for ten years ,after being on the to be housed list , Got Fed Up not GET UP and throws a molotov cocktail nto the HOMEWEST building in some sort of protest ...then down the road ( and bless those young kids( early 20s lil justice warriors ❤ even if personally , i feel like sometimes they are misguided ) @ the 🏳️🌈 drop in place .. ( theyd let me charge my phone there as I'd push my shopping trolley thru the main drag ,past the roundabout with the lighthouse in the middle...you cant miss it ...i didnt have a passport so i couldn't book a hostel ..so roamed around like a covert hobo getting tipsy and being appreciative of regional yet fast changing Australian culture ... Your Jokers tunnel brought the memory back ...like the beautiful awe inspiring Cathedral ❤ of Geraldton ... perhaps one of the most beautiful in the southern hemisphere -World ♥️🌞🖤🇦🇺... but the story about the aboriginal dude doing it hard for too long firebombing the Homeswest Office surely took the biscuit up the road to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation on a platter as Lead Story ...next on channel 2©️ Domestic Correspondent !
Loving your work. Im part of the heritage skills association and would love to chat to you. DM me please. 😊
I don't think you can DM on UA-cam anymore, but feel free to email me. The address is in the description.
Have you ever done a video of Wilgie Mia? Ochre mine, Iron ore mine, Thorium mine. Seriously impressive visually.
for someone with tunnel vision , that joker is pretty funny bastard ! Can you dig IT Can Can you digg IT ?
I walked past the entertainment centre while ACDC were doing a sound check, quite loud from outside and I was at the other end of the carpark where the Arena is today.
I used to go to that cinema for the monday 2 for 1 double bill all the time. Best combo Man Bites Dog + Reservoir Dogs. I saw that tool concert too
Is that Mark? 1:14
That's unfortunate that those two trams were allowed to deteriorate so much. They're probably worth about $20 for the pair now, nothing left that even can be restored. Pity.
So nice to see Aus having done small buildings in the past, here's to hoping small becomes the new norm again 🤞🏼
Yes Brendan - it's interesting.
👍
There was a big scale model of the flax mill inside the flax mill last time I was there. I believe the new camp kitchen you showed was built by prisoners on work release.
Ringa Railway Bridge is another great look!
My father in law was given the job of looking after the prisoners in this camp and one of the Italian prisioners was very skilled and made him a I guess you could call it a promise box. The ti.ber is 5mm thick and made from curly Jarrah A local hard wood. The curly Jarrah has a squiggly grain giving a beautiful effect. He was an excelent craftsman and it not only looks beautiful but it has a trick way of opening it and does take a while to work it out. We now have it here to hand it down through the family. I have taken photos to post but cant find how to post.He enjoyed his time there
Brendan is there any connection between the E class 66 tram and the long running 66 express\limited stop bus from Morley to the city which was recently renumbered 950x and extended to the new Morley train station? Just wondering if the tram in question used to run down Beaufort st just like the bus.
E.C. = Electrical Cabinet (I'm an electrical engineer)
Great to see this.pity other state governments dont do the same thing.
i really hope this channel gets big so you can visit even more obscure places lol
