Royalty in Halls Head - The Castle Fun Park
Built by George Kaspar and his son, Ron in the early 1980s, this castle was originally for the Halls Head Estates (just south of Mandurah). By 1988, however, it was part of the Castle Fun Park. This was well known and fondly remembered by many in Perth as it was a popular stopping point on trips down South. These days, it's unfortunately more known as an abandoned ruin - but let's delve into the history of George and his castles - and hopefully what the future holds!

Kookynie - Not Quite a Ghost Town
Переглядів 7 тис.Місяць тому
Kookynie, several hours north of Kalgoorlie, proliferated thanks to the discovery of gold in the 1890s. Within several decades, however, the mines started to close as they became untenable and the townsite shrank. What was once 400 buildings (including 7 licenced hotels) is now a handful of scatted brick ruins. It's not a ghost town, though! Approximately a dozen people still live here and ther...
Was this the WORLD'S smallest bank?
Переглядів 5 тис.2 місяці тому
In the small town of Shackleton, about 200km east of Perth, you will find what was (probably) the smallest bank in the world. Sounds crazy, but I couldn't any information to suggest otherwise. The structure was originally transported from Bruce Rock and was initially a branch of the Agricultural Bank. Over the decades, it has served as a branch for the Bank of New South Wales, R&I, and lastly, ...
The Ongoing Tale of Subiaco Oval
Переглядів 29 тис.3 місяці тому
Subiaco Oval has been a home to football players for over 115 years. Its had many physical changes around it over the decades, particularly with the rise of the WAFL and later the AFL, but the oval has remained the same. With the demolition of Domain Stadium, I go through its extensive history, changes and discover what remains today. Website: www.brendansodyssey.com Email: brendansodyssey@gmai...
Atlantis Marine Park - What Remains?
Переглядів 23 тис.3 місяці тому
Opening in Two Rocks on Boxing Day 1981, the Atlantis Marine Park was a unique theme park for Perth including all sorts of performing sea life, primarily dolphins. This story goes deeper, however, involving Alan Bond's Yanchep Sun City and the prime times of the 80s, followed by the downturn of the 90s. Even though it was mostly demolished in the early 90s, there are still remains 30 years late...

Burswood was once an island?
Переглядів 25 тис.4 місяці тому
Before Burswood was a peninsula, it was an island. And before it was an island... it was a peninsula. I always wondered why Burswood was labelled as an island on old maps. After some research, it turns out it's because of Perth's first-ever infrastructure project: a canal. The Burswood Canal (or "Old Burswood Canal" as it's usually referred to) was constructed in the 1830s to cut off a difficul...
I rode Perth’s last tram
Переглядів 7 тис.4 місяці тому
I was lucky enough to be offered a tour of the headquarters and workshops for the Perth Electric Tramway Society in Whiteman Park. Operating since the 80s, they offer the unique experience of riding vintage trams on a purpose-made route throughout the park. During the tour, I was given insight into their extensive tram collection, the process of restoring and maintaining the cars and additional...
The Lincoln Street Ventilation Stack
Переглядів 12 тис.5 місяців тому
The Lincoln Street Ventilation Stack can be found in the suburb of Highgate, close to the Perth CBD. Constructed in 1941 under the guidance of Russell Dumas, the stack was a failed experiment to exert acidic gas from the sewer network. All the equipment quickly corroded and it was known to stink out the local neighbourhood. It was sealed off after only four weeks of operation but gained a secon...
What remains of Perth's tram network?
Переглядів 76 тис.5 місяців тому
The Perth tram network ran from 1899 until 1958 and included an expansive system that reached all corners of the metropolitan area. In this video, I set out and document all that remains decades later. This video includes remains in South Perth (the ferry tram), Mount Lawley, Victoria Park, Perth, Yanchep National Park and, of course, the Perth Electric Tramway Society in Whiteman Park. Website...
I found remains of the Perth Entertainment Centre
Переглядів 116 тис.6 місяців тому
Constructed in 1974, the Perth Entertainment Centre (PEC) was home to many big acts over the years like David Bowie and Micheal Jackson and many other major events like Miss Universe 1979. It also hosted several basketball teams, including the Perth Wildcats. It was demolished in 2011, but amazingly, portions of it still remain today even with the amount of development that's happened around th...
What Remains of the Belmont Railway Spur?
Переглядів 15 тис.6 місяців тому
From 1885 to 1956, the Belmont Spur Line, also known as the Belmont Branch and the Perth Racecourse Railway, ran from the Eastern Line in Bayswater, across the Swan River and terminated at the Ascot Racecourse. It was notable for specially designed carriages that could transport up to 60 horses per train. Nearly 70 years after demolition, I follow and recreate the former trainline on my bike. W...
The Abandoned Mundijong-Jarrahdale Railway
Переглядів 31 тис.Рік тому
I’ve always noticed a semi-destroyed railway bridge over the South Western Highway and wondered where it went. Today, I follow the abandoned railway line from the town of Mundijong to the bushland behind Jarrahdale. This railway line operated from the late 1960s to the late 1990s and serviced an Alcoa bauxite mine. After the mine closed, the land it was on was completely rehabilitated but for s...
The Skeleton Bridge of Boyup Brook
Переглядів 31 тис.Рік тому
Today we’re near the town of Boyup Brook, hiking out to experience a massive wooden trestle railway bridge that crosses the Blackwood River. Constructed in 1912, the Skeleton Bridge was in service until 1982. The line spurred from the Bunbury-Manjimup line from Donnybrook and ran to Kojonup. The bridge itself has survived bushfires and multiple floods over the years, so it's well worth the shor...

The Long-Forgotten Bennett Brook Bridge
Awesome work Brendan. Thank you.
I just realised this video is over a year old and I can't work out why I didn't see it before. Oh well I got there in the end :)
It is such a shame that the mill was allowed to deteriorate so badly. I would have loved to have seen it when it was operating as a sort of museum. For reference a super foot is a volume of timber 12 inches wide, 12 inches long and 1 inch thick.
The venue for miss universe 1979
With the Joondalup line having extended to and become the Yanchep line making a lot easier for anyone to get to for a day from anywhere in Perth it wouldn’t be a bad idea to try restoring the old theme park but I’d be shocked to see that happen
Have you been to Shannon mill townsite
I wasn't aware of that one. Good call
Pass by this often and I’ve waited for the council to develop it as a park for kids or even move it all to somewhere it can be played on, but I doubt it will happen. The council is hell bent on letting every last inch of land be made into housing or other developments, so the idea of giving time to something that’s free to the public is a fantasy. Yes there’s a history of places going up in smoke since the old boat hire business was conveniently gutted to make way for the canals to the left of the old bridge way back when, whenever something is in the way of land development, there’s a fire that takes care of things. 😉
This showed up on my feed and I almost had a heart attack. My parents still live around the corner so I see it's sad degraded form all the time, and I have plenty of friends who went through high school emo phases and took brooding photographs inside it. Great job!
This was another great video. I'm looking forward to the next one
Saw so many wonderful concerts & movies at PEC , such great memories. Not forgetting Kiss , Wings , Abba , Rod Stewart , Jethro Tull , Robert Plant , The Cure , Oasis . . . on and on . Thanks for the history . PS , I did see Tool in 2022 . What a waste of a brilliant venue . Bloody kovid eh ?
That’s cool mate! I remember visiting when I was quite young in the late 90s (32 now) Another cool fun park type thing was “The Whistle Stop” down near Busselton. Miniature train theme park
I live in perth and my grandfather lived just past Mandurah so i went there a few times as a kid, no i drive to Mandurah to visit my parents and drive past and see all in ruin and its so sad to see something that was made so beautifully just abandoned like it was trash , the local government should have preserved this site 😢
All the bush in this video around this camp is about to be bulldozed and the Munda Biddi and Bibbulmun trails have already been re-routed because Alcoa are moving in and mining all the bauxite out of the ground (Myara North)
I have some video footage from about 1985-86
I have a old family picture there as well
took our young sons there and took our grandkids there in the ruined state it is now in need restoration maybe men shed guys could do it
i just snuck in their wish i could still swin in the pool
You might be able to after today's weather
Please please restore this. We don't need more heritage torn down or should I say burnt down deliberately!
I've lived in halls head for about 15 years. Was always funny seeing the castle and wondering what it once was. My mates and I had a nice drunken evening in there on my 18th. Never knew that pool was in the shape of Aus...
It's wild to see a place ive driven past every day of my life and wandered into after one particularly drunken night in town appear in my UA-cam recommended.
I remember that place so well. Glad I got to "Swim around Australia" before the place closed down.
What a cool place it used to be! My heart breaks to see it all destroyed 😢
Love the videos mate. Just happy to hear the og intro music back. What a banger!
Fantastic video Brendan! Definitely the best and most informative I’ve ever seen on Castle Fun Park. Your research is so impressive and it’s very accurate. I didn’t know about the last development plan you mentioned, I only knew about the childcare centre. I’ll definitely post this video on the Perth History Database page listing! Lastly, thanks for the shoutout! Mark will be thrilled too!! Keep up the awesome work.
anyone remember "It's a Small World" in perth in the 80s/90s? it was like a house full of minatures, like doll houses and train sets and stuff. you payed like a dollar and could walk thru the house and check it all out. my grandfather took us a few times when we were kids but my memories are a little vague.
😡 I got excited thinking why have I never heard of this castle 🏰 🤔 😢and then I see what it looks like now? That's so sad man I would have loved to go there for a trek with the fam
We actually drove past the castle two days ago and wondered what it's story was! Then pops up your video today, thanks for the info!!
Troode the Peter bibby shirt
Lucky you got in with this one before they started building the McDonald's next to King Neptune's ear hey Brendan..! 😮
Yeah! What bullshit is that? Plenty of free space for a Macca's in Two Rocks. They should save that place for tourism. I saw two groups of tourists on my visit alone. They make the journey from the city to see Neptune
I have passed it so many times and always wondered what it was. Thanks for this video.
My high school gf lived just down the road from here in 2014 we used to walk around the grounds most days after school. Sad to see so much of it gone.
Isnt it sad they just let it turn to shit.. typical of anything in Methandurah
Great work Brendon all the time it was there I have driven past many times and never went in
The madman actually did it. Mandurah represent!
The good old sesh spot of yesteryear.
Do one on the "Futuro House" on Pinjarra Rd..
That Loch Ness monster was so pissweak lmao.
Oh my god, I had almost forgotten Nessie. Personally I think it was the increasing cost and need for insurance, that killed the place. Things like public liability and the demand from parents that playgrounds be safe enough that not even a toddler could hurt themselves. Plus the law that stated every pool should be watched by a lifeguard and all workers should have a working with children's check. Litigation and red tape preventing kids from doing what they did best, playing.
Great to hear it’s been repainted. Hopefully someone totally restores it soon.
Great episode, I remember going there about 1988.
The walkway / cycleway was not installed by the rail tunnel developers even though it was on the drawings
Oof
Drive past that going to the pub always wondered what it was
Great video mate. This is how the time felt. Up to. The 1987 stock crash everything was possible. The day after the 1987 stock crash nothing was possible.
So THAT is the story behind the castle at Hammond Park in Kalgoorlie! I had never heard of the Halls Head castle park, but as a Kalgoorlie kid the Hammond Park Castle is LEGENDARY! We used to climb all over it as kids, until it was fenced off when I was a teenager.
As a kid I loved going to Hammond Park in the 80s. I remember that the castle then had little figures like knights.
I visited the real Neuschwanstein Castle recently and I can say that is a very good replica! I had no idea there was a model of it right here in Perth!
You don't post alot but when you do its a cracker of video.
Who would win in a fight between King Neptune and Castle Fun Park?
More importantly, who would win a fight between Alan Bond and Kevin Parry?
I think Castle Fun Park was one of those places I begged my parents to take me to but we never got there before either it closed or I became a teenager and didn't care anymore. I did visit the remains sometime in the early 2000s, it was in a pretty sorry state then. In 2016 I visited the actual Oberammergau and Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria - both places are pretty spectacular.
Surely the local council could re-do it and make it a little park or playground for minimal cost.
Wow, I was just thinking today about when your next video would be. This brings back many happy childhood memories. Thank you!
