Royalty in Halls Head - The Castle Fun Park
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 жов 2024
- Built by George Kaspar and his son, Ron in the early 1980s, this castle was originally for the Halls Head Estates (just south of Mandurah). By 1988, however, it was part of the Castle Fun Park. This was well known and fondly remembered by many in Perth as it was a popular stopping point on trips down South. These days, it's unfortunately more known as an abandoned ruin - but let's delve into the history of George and his castles - and hopefully what the future holds!

It's wild to see a place ive driven past every day of my life and wandered into after one particularly drunken night in town appear in my UA-cam recommended.
So THAT is the story behind the castle at Hammond Park in Kalgoorlie!
I had never heard of the Halls Head castle park, but as a Kalgoorlie kid the Hammond Park Castle is LEGENDARY!
We used to climb all over it as kids, until it was fenced off when I was a teenager.
As a kid I loved going to Hammond Park in the 80s. I remember that the castle then had little figures like knights.
This showed up on my feed and I almost had a heart attack. My parents still live around the corner so I see it's sad degraded form all the time, and I have plenty of friends who went through high school emo phases and took brooding photographs inside it. Great job!
I remember that place so well. Glad I got to "Swim around Australia" before the place closed down.
Love the videos mate. Just happy to hear the og intro music back. What a banger!
Great video. Always wondered why that old abandoned castle was sitting there, very interesting. Whatever they do with the future development, surely they keep whats left of the castle and the few trees left standing.
Theres a couple old houses down the road from there, near the canals called 'Halls Cottage'. Might be another interesting video for you to make...
Mandurah & surrounding suburbs some of the best in Perth.
Drove past those on the way into Mandurah. Very interesting
We actually drove past the castle two days ago and wondered what it's story was! Then pops up your video today, thanks for the info!!
What a cool place it used to be! My heart breaks to see it all destroyed 😢
I visited the real Neuschwanstein Castle recently and I can say that is a very good replica! I had no idea there was a model of it right here in Perth!
I've lived in halls head for about 15 years. Was always funny seeing the castle and wondering what it once was. My mates and I had a nice drunken evening in there on my 18th. Never knew that pool was in the shape of Aus...
The madman actually did it.
Mandurah represent!
My high school gf lived just down the road from here in 2014 we used to walk around the grounds most days after school. Sad to see so much of it gone.
I have passed it so many times and always wondered what it was. Thanks for this video.
The good old sesh spot of yesteryear.
Awesome, that was fascinating. Interesting coincidence that your other source was Delphine as she took over my Abandoned Western Australia page on Facebook and has done a great job expanding it.
Delphine is great! I've really been enjoying the work she's doing on Rotto
You beat me to it Marc. I mentioned you’d be happy with the shoutout. What a great video hey!
That’s cool mate! I remember visiting when I was quite young in the late 90s (32 now)
Another cool fun park type thing was “The Whistle Stop” down near Busselton. Miniature train theme park
Somewhere in our family video collection is footage of the park. ❤ Will have to dig it out one day
Great work Brendon all the time it was there I have driven past many times and never went in
Fantastic video Brendan! Definitely the best and most informative I’ve ever seen on Castle Fun Park. Your research is so impressive and it’s very accurate. I didn’t know about the last development plan you mentioned, I only knew about the childcare centre. I’ll definitely post this video on the Perth History Database page listing! Lastly, thanks for the shoutout! Mark will be thrilled too!! Keep up the awesome work.
Had a work picnic there in 1992 and completely forgot about it since. Nice work.
I live in perth and my grandfather lived just past Mandurah so i went there a few times as a kid, no i drive to Mandurah to visit my parents and drive past and see all in ruin and its so sad to see something that was made so beautifully just abandoned like it was trash , the local government should have preserved this site 😢
😡 I got excited thinking why have I never heard of this castle 🏰 🤔 😢and then I see what it looks like now? That's so sad man I would have loved to go there for a trek with the fam
Wow, I was just thinking today about when your next video would be. This brings back many happy childhood memories. Thank you!
Great episode, I remember going there about 1988.
Great to hear it’s been repainted.
Hopefully someone totally restores it soon.
Peter Bibby t-shirt! Cool! I've got a goon bag for a pillow too! ...Great vid BTW...
Never went to Castle Fun, but I do remember "Dizzy Lamb Park" with the monster school bus. It was as kitsch as the 80's and early 90's could get.
I've been told by a reliable source (my Mum) that I went to Dizzy... but I have no memories of it. It's used for paintball now.
@@brendansodyssey I can't remember it much except for the bus. Only went there once, like you, I was a young lad.
I have similar memories of El Caballo Blanco from around the same time before it closed. Haven't been there since it reopened.
Woooo! Kalgoorlie!
I think Castle Fun Park was one of those places I begged my parents to take me to but we never got there before either it closed or I became a teenager and didn't care anymore. I did visit the remains sometime in the early 2000s, it was in a pretty sorry state then. In 2016 I visited the actual Oberammergau and Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria - both places are pretty spectacular.
I'm kinda surprised they ever had enough customers to stay open. Back in those days to travel from Perth to Mandurah you needed to pack lunch :D It wasn't just 30 minutes down the freeway like today until after the early 2000's. Even Kwinana motorplex used to be like driving to another state :D One of my brothers lived in Halls Head for a few years in the 90's but I never went to Castle Fun :(
Yeah I remember when going to Mandurah was a drive through the bush, essentially a drive through the country. To arrive at a small town with asbestos shacks built along the coast line. Our land would be worth so much money, sold it when Mandurah was a country town far, far away from Perth.
@@MargotHypnos It was a lovely "little" beach town. It is quite scary how much Perth has expanded in only 20 years, swallowing up everything in it's path. You can drive for an hour and a half north or south and still see houses built half a metre apart :(
@@Muffin_Masher Yeah, Mandurah is now technically an area / suburbs of Perth.
I have a old family picture there as well
Please please restore this. We don't need more heritage torn down or should I say burnt down deliberately!
Oh my god, I had almost forgotten Nessie. Personally I think it was the increasing cost and need for insurance, that killed the place. Things like public liability and the demand from parents that playgrounds be safe enough that not even a toddler could hurt themselves. Plus the law that stated every pool should be watched by a lifeguard and all workers should have a working with children's check. Litigation and red tape preventing kids from doing what they did best, playing.
Pass by this often and I’ve waited for the council to develop it as a park for kids or even move it all to somewhere it can be played on, but I doubt it will happen. The council is hell bent on letting every last inch of land be made into housing or other developments, so the idea of giving time to something that’s free to the public is a fantasy. Yes there’s a history of places going up in smoke since the old boat hire business was conveniently gutted to make way for the canals to the left of the old bridge way back when, whenever something is in the way of land development, there’s a fire that takes care of things. 😉
Surely the local council could re-do it and make it a little park or playground for minimal cost.
Drive past that going to the pub always wondered what it was
Can u do some videos where you’re vlogging and exploring like you, used to? Love your work 😊
The behind the scenes videos of my filming trips to Kalgoolie and Cue are kind of like that, but it's part of the membership. I don't want to sound too much of a stooge, but that's only $3 a month 😅 It can be cancelled immediately, however.
That Loch Ness monster was so pissweak lmao.
Who would win in a fight between King Neptune and Castle Fun Park?
More importantly, who would win a fight between Alan Bond and Kevin Parry?
Do one on the "Futuro House" on Pinjarra Rd..
nice shirt!
i just snuck in their wish i could still swin in the pool
You might be able to after today's weather
took our young sons there and took our grandkids there in the ruined state it is now in need restoration maybe men shed guys could do it
I have some video footage from about 1985-86
Troode the Peter bibby shirt
Peter Bibby tshirt!
Love the Bibster
Isnt it sad they just let it turn to shit.. typical of anything in Methandurah
The castle is all remaining in a beatup graffitied stae--housing estate and commercial industrial zoned now spare the ruins.
I've smoked meth in there so many times
