Atlantis Marine Park - What Remains?

  • Opening in Two Rocks on Boxing Day 1981, the Atlantis Marine Park was a unique theme park for Perth including all sorts of performing sea life, primarily dolphins. This story goes deeper, however, involving Alan Bond's Yanchep Sun City and the prime times of the 80s, followed by the downturn of the 90s. Even though it was mostly demolished in the early 90s, there are still remains 30 years later. Let's hope in the Kia and find out what remains!

A tiny little nugget of information for you. One of the statues can be found out the front of the Miss Maud head office at 136 Fitzgerald St. I am betting there are loads of them spread around WA and it would be cool to know where they all are.

Have many memories and photos of visits to Atlantis during childhood including the time I was selected to receive a kiss from a sea lion.
The WA Museum Boola Bardip in the city also has a small small display on Atlantis and the other abandoned theme parks of Perth in the Reflections Gallery including a short video that shows the history of Atlantis.

Wow Mate. You really do dig up some gems.
I remember going there as a kid not long after it opened and loved it.
But as an adult I definately agree, that the best place for Animals is in their own habitat.
Still its kind of sad to see it all but gone. Seems like every year another part of of my childhood in and around Perth disappears. ☹

Another great video mate! I first visited the ruins of Atlantis when my aunty moved there, mid to late 90s, was such a thrill to sneak through the rusty gates and explore with my grandfather and hear about the park. Went last year and was surprised at how much had been cleared. Cheers, keep them coming!

Same with the place in Mandurah with the castles that’s covered in graffiti. Last time I went past a lot of the old park had been developed and only two of the miniture castles left.

Hi Brendan. Really enjoy your videos. Can I suggest a vid about Canning Bridge? I don't know much about it (I'm probably not alone in that :)), even though I grew up near it and used to go fishing underneath it (it had/has a kind of jetty thing underneath it, projecting from the Como side of the river). Two things are clear: It's pretty old, and made of wood. So it has to have a cool history, right :)
Another potentially interesting historical site is the nearby Heathcote Hospital (now a kind of public park/space), but all the old buildings are still there.

This is a great. One Brendon I too visited king Neptune in 2021 when we went on a driving trip up north to Exmouth
I hadn’t been there since 1983 when we did the whole park experience
The 80s were quite a time never to be seen again
I would get in the Delorian and go back tomorrow if I had half a chance
We had so many crazy amazing things back the
And did you see how much it was to have a house built $22500

I'm glad you decided to make this one, after I commented previously suggesting it I had gone and visited again myself, a nice motorbike ride up. It was great to see king Neptune cleaned up and open to the public.
I was a little disappointing that a number of the shops at the complex had shut and it was looking a bit dilapidated, but I hope the development going through can bring life back.

I remember Yanchep Sun CIty being a long way from home (Balga) and cold and mostly deserted (so we likely went in winter).
We went to Atlantis in it's hey-day and it was fun - but not surprising that it fell into decline.
There was speculation that Bond had named the development "Sun City" after Sun City in South Africa - possibly to attract South African investors or potential home oweners.

I wonder what happened to the Charlie Chaplain statue (it was in your video, he was headless!) as I remember seeing it years ago but it appears to have dissapeared. It’s amazing walking through and matching up what would’ve been. I’ve been in touch with the WA Museum as I’ve collected several pieces from the park that I’d like to donate to the museum - Atlantis T shirt, seal plush, dolphin plush, Atlantis bell, post card, glass mug, and collectable spoons.

My family went to Atlantis when I was about 6 years old (so mid 1980s). I remember the aquariums and being scared to tears by King Neptune, don't really remember the dolphin shows. I always wanted to go back and would constantly hassle my mum about it. Then it closed and I never got my chance. I did go up there with some friends around 2009 and got some cool photos, the "Prickle" (that star shaped building) was still there, but obviously used as a drug den (so was Neptune actually).

Hi Brendan. Thanks so much for making this. I had hoped you might get to Alantis at some point. There is some good 1989 footage here from the 8:10 mark: ua-cam.com/video/uDhY48p4BFk/v-deo.htmlsi=D8W7ueGelEqnckjQ&t=490
There was a tonne of weird and whacky theme parks north of Perth in the 1980's. The Wanneroo Lion Park (opened in the '70s) was the oddest of all. You drove your car into a fenced off 'park' area filled with lions and threw a slab of meat out the car window that you purchased from the front entrance. My memory of the meat was that it is was a giant slab of rump steak. You could then watch the big cats eat it. I first went there around 1980-81, not long after my family migrated to Western Australia from NZ. There were various rumours and sightings of an escaped lion where I lived at the time in Bullsbrook and there was also a story about someone who killed themselves there by getting out of their car. The lions attacked and ate them.

I went there in 2018 I think, good to hear they won't knock down Neptune at least. Watched a few of your videos, they are pretty good. If you ever want to do one on Bartons Mill I have a lot of pictures of that place over the years, cheers

Bullens Lion Park was up past Wanneroo it was established in 1971 as a refuge for displaced circus lions.
in 1982, a man stepped out of his car and walked into the lion compound wearing religious medallions and holding a cross - he was mauled to death by a pack of lions awaiting their mid-morning feed.
