How the Six Principles explain the ending to Mask of Light | BIONICLE Deep Dive
Переглядів 8 тис.Рік тому
The Six Principles were a set of values that the Matoran had in addition to the Three Virtues, introduced in MNOG II, where you play as Hahli in preparation for the Kohlii tournament. While a relatively obscure part of the lore, the Principles offer an incredible amount of worldbuilding to the island of Mata Nui, and may offer additional insight into the significance of the ending to Mask of Li...

An AMV I cooked up showing Makuta Teridax from Bionicle, set to Attack on Titan opening: The Rumbling, to kind of compare the characters of Teridax and Eren. When I was a kid it never even occurred to me that bionicles had gender. When I first found out about it I remember wow that’s cool. It never changed how I played with them but bionicles having a gender makes them more interesting to me because it adds a separation between them and stereotypical robots. And then there’s questions like “what exactly makes a bionicle male or female?”. Besides the obvious voice pitch differences do male and female bionicles have features that the other doesn’t. Are there biological differences since bionicles are part organic?. All and all it makes the toy line more interesting and I feel like they should have played around with it more. Like for example the island we know has mostly make matoran. So maybe there’s another island where it was the opposite. Or perhaps as time progresses all matoran tribes eventually had both male and female but all still work together as equals like they always have. The only issue I have is that female bionicles were mostly color locked to blue. If they hadn’t given such a specific aspect to the lore simply knowing that there are male and female characters would have meant we can decide what toy we had was male or female. But knowing that female characters were more or less limited to one color limits the role play aspect of our imagination when it comes to bionicle. Sure we can just make up our own lore but to people who know the lore from top to bottom it becomes rather challenging. Still though bionicle is one of the best toy franchises ever.

I bought one figure, thought it was okay-ish but not worth buying any more since CCBS still sucked in my opinion. Aesthetics sucked, not mechanical enough, too many flat surfaces. the story and tone was much too childish compared to G1. not enough of the mysticism and mysteriousness of G1. Also hated the gold they slapped onto every character. Overall I did hate what they did with it. During G1 I was one of their most braindead loyal customers and had almost every figure up until they changed their sockets to the uber brittle ones. At which point I slowly stopped buying until I never bought a single figure of the Stars series.

What's interesting about Mata Nui in particular is that he never actually sees himself as a god even once. When we get to look at his perspective, he only ever saw himself as a leader, a ruler of the Matoran Universe, not its deity.

Regarding Lhikan's spirit melding with Jaller's, I believe this would've happened when Jaller first got the mask, not when he was resurrected. Sort of like a software update making Jaller become more like Lhikan over time.

My personal funny headcanon for the Kanohi Olici is that Karzahni used it somewhat like a UA-cam tutorial, just imagine Karzahni just looking looking back and forth from an imaginary screen where Velika is explaining how to fix a Ga-Matoran. This gave me a REALLY funny joke fan-game where Karzahni would be taking orders from Matoran that needed fixing but it would have the same gameplay loop as a Papa-Louie ___eria game. Apologies if i misspelled any Bionicle terms/things, im not the best heh.

Honestly I have to wonder....what exactly happens when someone is revived in the Matoran universe. When a being fies they are suppose to be sent to the Red Star to be rebuilt and revived....but do to a malfuntion that doesn't happen and they are left up there as Zombies. But what happens when some on is brought back to life? How is the Red Star involved with that.

Lmao, as you were building up to the “each element is a gender” point my brain suddenly lit up with the same conclusion. That’s really awesome to think about. This and the points from the other video about the Great Beings/Glatorian society being crazy sexist has me thinking Bionicle has some wild potential if it ever comes back under writers who care about exploring these themes. I remember there was a lot of stuff towards the end of G1 about the inhabitants of the MU essentially being soulless drones who at some point became self aware. Fuck, that’s so interesting - imagine after they get integrated into Spherus Magna society everyone is shocked by the wildly different ideas Matoran and such have about identity and societal roles. Ah, if only we could get some kind of G1 sequel that sticks around. Awesome vids homie

The Manas also are drawn to heat, the hotter it is, the stronger they become. In the story, the Toa Mata defeated Them by Freezing them solid. But Pewku clearly has no issue in Extreme cold since we see her in Ko-Wahi in Mask of Light. A place no Manas Crab would dare to tread. 🤔 We also have to remember that the Makuta were the ones that created all the Rahi beasts. From the tiniest Ficko to the Mightiest of Tahtorak. Meaning they know how to not only create...but Alter Rahi...its possible The Manas were created from Ussal crabs as a way to taunt the matoran for there bond with the Ussal.

Personally I enjoyed the dark tones of Bionicle, especially because it wasn't edge for the sake of edge. The tone naturally grew more intense as the valid stakes rose. Greg Farshtey is pretty much the good ending of a writer having mostly free reign with a brand as opposed to someone like Ken Penders with Archie Sonic (At least Ian Flynn is doing great work with IDW Sonic and somehow managed to salvage the later part of Archie). Bionicle's world, characters, and its writing still inspires me with my own writing to this day so I'm forever grateful for it.

A Great video, actually if Piraka evil mirrors of mata/nuva Barraki it's evil version of Hordika in same similar context and overall mutations theme from glorious warrior's into an animals : Matau who suffered after transformation and ehlek who actually Dont care about it. Or Onewa and his power of mind control and notorious Carapar. But most importantly its like said inversion of White and red: Nuju was in "introvert" and after their adventures started talking like a bird and Calmah who work with his squids. Or even Nokama, who do everything what in her power's too keeping team together and Takadox 😅

Here is my opposite personalites of real toas, the Barraki and the Pirakas An toa of fire-Bold, honorable, charismatic passionate but also hotheaded with a strong sense of duty and caring of others. Hakann-Narcissistic as hell Kalmah-Very cold, calculating and incredibly calm as the same time despite trying to plan to the take over the matoran universe An toa of water-Calm, kind and peacemaking. Vezok-Very impulsive, violent and insane. And before he got splitted into two peaces he was very dangerous and unpredictable. Because of he was then a psychopath. Takadox-Very manipulative towards everyone around him, especially to Carapar. Who he treated like a robot of a dog, when he was sent to the pit and when he lived in the bottom of the Sea of the Southern Continent. Which also shows that he was a psychopath like Vezok and Thok as well. An toa of earth-Very smart and strong, were they think more before they make any decisions to attack their enemies. Reidak-Loves to use his brute strength rather than thinking and planning. Before he is taking any action, which is a typical toa of air or stone would do. Mantax- Are secretive when he decides to investigate things. An toa of ice-Quiet, calm, collected, very intelligent and very independent as well. Thok-Very manipulative towards everyone around him like Takadox, and likes to bully the rest of the Piraka with his so called “Jokes” towards them. Pridak-Very aggressive and violent despite being a leader. An toa of stone-Strong, independent, practical and direct. As well as dependable. Avak-Very creative, smart and hates to fight psychically. Carapar-Use to be a dominant and smart conqueror, until he was sentenced to the pit. Were he was hypnotized by Takadox so much that, he became too obedient to him and sometimes very dumb because of this. An toa of air-Very lighthearted, and relaxed. But also hates sometimes to think before taking action. Zaktan-Are very serious and scary. Ehlek-Very angry and because of this gets very irritating towards things. Takanuva-Mata Nuis great hope of defeating Teridax and his evil at that island. Vezon-An copy of the Joker from Batman. Were he is insane and unpredictable because of this. Nocturn-Aggressive, with no impulse control what so ever but dumb as the same time.

My personal interpretation is that, since all Bionicle media is translated from the original -Klingo- Matoran language, the gender issue is a result of Matoran tribal generalisations and pronouns (or lack thereof) having no accurate translations at the time, and being crammed into the closest analogous human ideas. The Ga-matoran are not "all-female" -- the human translators in the 1990s-2000s looked at them and perceived similarities to what they recognised as "femininity". Matoran reading Bionicle would be extremely confused, either questioning why humans lumped five elements under one pronoun (if they had pronoun segregation at all), or questioning why water was separated out (if it turned out that they don't do that).

A part of me would've liked the idea if we got the toa and their stories in waves, and during that wave, we learn about their journey for the golden mask. So, wave one would obviously be Tahu. Give us a set of Tahu, the protector of fire, a matoran, a rahi and one of the skull warriors as a final opponent to earn the mask. Dont even show us the other toa for the whole of Tahu's story. Get us invested in him as a character, and his quest to get the golden mask, then take it to the centre of the island, and when he finally goes to the centre of the island, he finds the other toa getting there at the same time as him. I know it'd be crazy for lego to do it like this, but it would get us invested in Tahu as a character, and let us learn about his part of the island and his people. Then we get a wave like that for each toa so LEGO has the time to show us this world for us to actually care

Hm, interesting analysis. I think, from a fanfic/cntinuation/reboot perspective, exploring the conflict between the good and the bad view of the virtues could be an interesting idea for a villain. A villain that embodies the three virtues in their negative view. Similar to the sympathetic Makuta you talked about in oine of your other videos in idea, a character who embodies the virtues and believes in them, believe they are doing the right thing, but the interpretation of how they do this is in conflict to the others. For a reboot/AU idea, this could be something like the Vahi but as a leader-type person - the "protocol" meant to keep the matorans in line to ensure the body keeps functioning properly. Not in the way the vahi were misused by Teridax, but but fully duing what their purpose is, not aware, or not able to act on the awareness, that the Matornas have gained sapience maybe. ANother inspiration for this idea, that I thought about while watching the video, was another one about D&D. Specifically, in that video the youtuber explains a scenario he had in a campaign, where a priest of Tiamat sees her and by extension the "chaotic" side of the alignment table as "freedom" while seeing "Order/lawfull" and Bahamut as "opressive". This would be a similar thing.

But I didn't even know the books existed. And by the time of the Mistika arc, I was completely lost and sort had to just accept the theming as being surface level. I did manage to *start* to get back into the story around halfway through the glatorian arc... but then the stars came out and the series ended. And then I was in college when G2 came out, so I didn't even hear about its existence until after it was ended.

I think one of the issues as well is the expectation of starting from the same point with the island of mata nui, we did it once already with g2. I feel like we got so much lore in G1 and the reveals of even things like metru nui, the larger world that they could take and rework all those ideas too. Sure take some inspo from the 2001-2003 like the more wild natural setting vs the mechanical side but incorporate more elements of this advanced ruined world like an overgrown wild metru nui.
