    I have a related theory. When the Toa Mata first fought Makuta, the fight Dosn’t really end in their victory. Makuta just taunts them that he can’t be defeated, leaves, and the Toa are all teleported back to the surface.
    In the Mata Nui Online Game, this is all witnessed in person by Takua.
    Makuta doesn’t even confront the Toa untill Takua is present, stalling with the Shadow Toa.
    So Takua arrives, Makuta spends a few seconds PUMMELING AND TAUNTING THE TOA, and just leaves, and teleports the Toa away.
    Then a door opens.
    To the Bohrok nest.
    The whole point of Makuta’s plot in the first story arc was to kill Takua via Bohrok.

    The cave scene and the scene where Takua takes the mask from Jaller and paddles away with it were always confusing to me, so this helps me understand some. He was like "oh no Jaller is in danger!" //leaves. But I guess he knew in the back of his mind that HE was the one being targeted so he was leaving Jaller to keep him safe (but also... going to where the rest of the matorns were? to figure that out again?)

      Maybe he was just trying to get back to civilization. Getting lost in the Onu-Wahi tunnels is no joke 😅and maybe he was trying to warn the Toa, he did go right up to them and tell them about the Rahkshi

    "my mask, is not merely meant to spread a little darkness here or there, but to see the inner darkness hidden within us all" ~makuta teridax
    the avohkii was much the same, showing the inner light of other beings
    that's why it glowed in reaction to jaller, not because it might make him a toa instead, but because it was reacting to the inner good in him, the worthiness to become a toa in the future
    in theory it could be used to tell if someone was destined to become a toa... interesting

    Its poetic and ironic in a way that in Makuta’s attempt to deter Takua from becoming the seventh toa, he unwittingly helped push him into becoming the toa of light. Like the scene after Takua and Jaller separated and the rahkshi attack onokoro, in his moment of fleeing Takua realises he led them to the village because he wanted to avoid his destiny. Once he realised that he turned Puku around, grabbed a kolhii staff and attempted to not only fight off the rahkshi but also I think try to draw the other two towards him. Even when Tahu was struck down by Kurahk he still try to fight them off until Lewa rescued him and Puku, drawing them away.

    According to some sources, Makuta's Kraahkan has the power over negative emotions like fear and doubt, and apparently "lets the user see moral darkness in others."
    With this in mind the exchange becomes a little more layered, suggesting that Makuta could be making his manipulation far more effective with the terrifying strength of his Kanohi. Makuta could probably see Takua's insecurities and fear and likely intensified it.
    It's also interesting that of all the dozens of Rahkshi at his disposal, most of them had powers more geared towards crippling their enemies emotional and physical states. Which was effective against the Toa, yes, but their primary target was Takua.

      @heroranuva8295  Рік тому +4

      Oo now that’s interesting yeah. He even says, “even my shadows cannot hide your fear” perhaps he was saying his mask of shadows was revealing Takua’s inner fears.
      And yeah the Rahkshi he chose were very devious, he says right out their purpose was to destroy the morals of the Matoran and Toa. In the second MNOG game where you play as Hahli, they go into the various principles of each village, and they describe how each attribute of the sox Rahkshi were the antithesis of the Matoran’s values that they derived from the Great Spirit. It’s stuff like this that makes Bionicle feel so mythological, the fight against the Rahkshi was literally a physical manifestation of their values vs Makuta’s corruption

      @@heroranuva8295 It's especially interesting because before this Makuta was portrayed as a kind of amalgamation of parts swirling around like a vortex, this was the year the Kraahkan mold was used.
      And yeah, it's very mythological in nature. The Toa are constantly challenged by something new that's usually a bad match up. I remember how Kopaka had to retrieve a mask surrounded by lava, and how the moment they become a Toa Nuva and test their new new elemental prowess, they loose it to the Bohrok Kal. With the Rahkshi the threat is far more personal because Tahu's anger is used against the Toa, Pohatu gets struck by fear, and Onua gets his strength sapped (and I just realized while typing that the Toa who form Akamai was hit the hardest by the Rahkshi and it was basically the Wairuha Toa who healed Tahu).

    the part I love most about makuta's manipulation is that at no point in this and most of his stories prior to the metru arc is he never lies. tells half truths or let people assume the false truths but never lies he always tells the truth.
    he tells takua that if he fails jaller will die which is true as he knows his rahkshi will likely kill him if she doesn't just let them have the mask. something he knows jaller would not willingly do.
    he tells takua that he will fail to find the toa because they are not looking for a literal toa like they originally though. the 7th toa had already been found the toa just hadn't found themselves yet.
    and he plays into takua's fears of being unworthy and what will happen if he fails, and even promises that he won't kill jalla if he hands the mask over which is true as makuta want's to enslave the matoran not kill them so he has no reason to kill jalla once the mask is his.
    i just love his writing in the matanui arc it's so good just love the manipulation and the way he tells half truths without actully lying.
    also p.s can makuta actually sweat or was that a metaphor?

    6:50 I believe this is because while Jaller would've become a Toa of Fire donning the Avohkii, it wouldn't been enough to really face Makuta. Takua in particular was the real threat to him because being a Toa of Light combined with the Avohkii matched or even surpassed than his power over shadow.

    Imo I always found the scariest part of Makuta isn't his appearance or strength, but his words. Makuta is extremely manipulative, and several times we've seen his manipulation work. He overthrew his brother by manipulating the other makuta, manipulated a ton of matoran to serve him, and had loyal followers by giving false promises, he even tries to manipulate Vakama to join him and give him the mask of time by promising him every desire he wished for. His mask, the Kraakhan, is also said to influence a person's inner fears, doubts, and morality. So Makuta's manipulation is even more effective because his mask straight up peers into souls and exploits emotional weaknesses. Tbh I wish we saw this side of Makuta more in the lore and movies, using his words and manipulation to sway others to his side and get what he wants, rather than do it himself.

    Now the real Question is why did Makuta challange Takanuva in Kolhii match? :V
    Was he too afraid for real fight where Takanuva could use his powers and probably end much faster it, so he decided to make him play by his rules of the deal and thinking by that - looking in past - he yet will be as clumsy in it as he was Takua?

      Oh yeah I 100% think that's why. Light is one of his few weaknesses. Even tho Makuta is still way more powerful, a Toa who commands light might be able to kill him without even meaning to if he gets a lucky shot. Gotta keep them both restricted so he has a chance to survive and continue his plan down the road. Which is also hilarious because it implies that Makuta watched the Kohlii tournament 😂

    I've never understood this part of lore. Wasn't the coming of the toa of light part of Teridax's plan? Didn't he wanted to lose and allow matoran to return to MetruNui?

    • @Arcanist_The
      @Arcanist_The 2 роки тому +6

      Yeah you're right, it was part of Terrys plan.
      It's worth pointing out though that the whole "everything is according to his keikaku" type of characterization for Teridax was something Greg retooled him to than part of his original characterization. During the Mask of Light Makuta wasn't some 5D chessing mastermind that gives the likes of David Xanatos, Sosuke Aizen or Evolt run for their money, but instead he was a simple "evil overlord on his throne" type of villain with a bit of tragic elements to him. It was first in the Metru Nui arc (Time Trap more specifically) when he ended becoming the cunning mastermind we all know and love. And yeah one could argue Makuta was always smart but he wasn't the hypercompetent mastermind he would end up as by the end of the series run.

    • @heroranuva8295
      @heroranuva8295  2 роки тому +9

      Good question! So the coming of the Toa of Light was actually not part of Teridax's plan, he very much did not want that to happen, but when it did he just rolled with it as best he could. One aspect about Teridax's Plan is that not all of it was actually carefully plotted out every single event, but rather that Teridax was also VERY good at improvising solutions to unforeseen problems, such as when the Toa Metru trapped him, he was able to recover by summoning his army of Visorak.
      He did eventually want them to get back to Metru Nui, and when Takua transformed, he figured, "well I guess now's as good a time as any". And he allowed himself to lose in a semi-controlled way to protect himself. In particular, part of the reason he chose to challenge Takanuva to a Kohlii match instead of a straight fight was because he didn't want Takanuva using his powers too much. While Makuta was definitely way more powerful overall, intense power of light is one of the few things that can actually kill him, and if Takanuva got a few lucky shots in, it might be over. Especially if he had the other six Toa Nuva backing him up, there's no way Teridax could win that fight, and they might even kill him accidentally.
      That said, even then, his loss got out of his hands. He very much did not plan on falling into Energized Protodermis and fusing into Takutanuva, nor having his armor completely smashed by the door. But after that he improvised again by manipulating the Piraka, who were raiding his lair, into collecting his essence for their antidermis, and pursuing the Mask of Life.
      So yeah he didn't plan the coming of the Toa of Light, but he was able to roll with it in ways that let him get out and keep his plans in motion. But even then it wasn't perfect. While he did have preparations for nearly every contingency, there were always holes in each of his schemes, and they all eventually add-up to his defeat later on. Hope this helps clear it up! It wasn't always super clear what was planned and what was unexpected, especially since Teridax would always try to save face and say everything is going according to plan

    • @Makutros
      @Makutros 2 роки тому +5

      In the great plan that Zaktan read in Legacy of Evil the coming of the Toa of Light was taken into consideration, but not a wished outcome. Teridax was a bit shocked it occurred and it eventually cost him his body, but he had enough plan Bs to make up for that loss.

      @@Arcanist_The I mean yeah while Greg definitely amped up those aspects of Makuta, I do think that the cunning planner aspect of him was still there to begin with. I mean, the whole reason the Toa have so much trouble with him is that he knows so much more about the world than they do, and is constantly using aspects that he understands against them to throw curveballs. And it definitely came up even during 04, with his plans to impersonate Dume, engineer a crisis, and trick the Matoran into falling into endless sleep for him. He's definitely always been at least a Star Wars Emperor Palpatine level manipulator

      @@heroranuva8295 there is something about Makuta's character design in Mask of Light that I find intriguing. From 2001-2003 Makuta's entire body looks infected and sick. His parts are rusted, the color faded out (extremely noticable in comparison to Takutanuva), and his movements are quite noisy.
      So in Mask of Light he doesn't look as though he is the original manipulator, more like he himself is consumed by the dark sickness. In the Mata Nui story arc infection played a big role. It controlled the animals, poisoned the Po-Matoran and the Matoran and Tahu suffered from the mind altering effects of the powers of darkness while the Rahkshi and Kraata realmed free.
      Also one of the original logos for Bionicle showed the infected Hau as the other half of the island of Mata Nui, focussing on the impact of the infection.
      But the fact that Takutanuva was free of the infection could be seen as a sign that the infection was not supposed to be part of Makuta itself, which would then lead to the evil Kraahkan theory made popular by TTV, but why would the Kraahkan create the infection?

    I think you said it yourself before in your posts/our convos (not sure which) but honestly the movie as whole gets a lot of added subtext and deeper meanings once you know Takua is the Toa of Light. This makes the movie much more interesting on repeat watches, as you know it's not as much your typical "journey to find the special new hero like he's some macguffin" but rather the journey to find the hero within. It is less about the the literal journey and destination, and more about Takuas journey to accept that he's the toa. Which I think is pretty cool
    Also when you talked about Makuta targeting Takua exclusively, it's worth pointing out that Makuta knows the destinies of every single character in Matoran Universe I think??? It was one of the methods he used to execute his Plan afterall. Therefore, he most likely knew that Takuas destiny was to become a Toa of Light and thus targeted him for that specific reason. It is very possible that Makuta knew Takuas destiny *was* to become the Toa that used Avokhii more specifically assuming multiple AV-Matoran were destined to become toa. Though tbf we don't know how deeply he knew each characters destiny, if he only knew the broad strokes, or if he knew every single detail of them.

Honestly not sure if he really does know every single person's destiny, but he definitely is paying close attention to the wheels of fate
