  • One of Bionicle's biggest strengths was always its incredibly unique and atmospheric world. A world that blended various aesthetics from the bio-mechanical nature of the characters, to the beautiful landscapes, and the mysticism and magic. Here I analyze how all these themes come together to produce wonderful, and surprisingly cohesive whole.

    This makes me realize some things about G2. The mask maker concept is probably the worst thing about the world building in G2. Mata Nui and all themes related to him are completely deleted from G2, while Makuta is so reduced to the role of a wanna-be god that his important role in the ecosystem is completely forgotten. The villains working for him are not tied to anything; they simply exist free from any context and don't feel as if they had a place in the world.

    • @heroranuva8295
      @heroranuva8295  Рік тому +22

      Yeah, that was something kinda disappointing about G2, very little of the world felt connected or like it pointed to a deeper mystery. All the aesthetic was there, but it didn't have the same depth because it felt like they never really explored their concepts well. Which is a shame because I actually liked most of the story concepts of G2, its just they were executed really shallowly.

      @@heroranuva8295 The strangest thing is they did this perfectly well even with Ninjago, with the first spinjitzu master's death still being unexplained to this day. Was it from normal old age, or some threat even more powerful than anything we've seen before? This is what I feel made both Bionicle and Ninjago have such staying power, like other toy brands around the world (my little pony, transformers, etc) told a compelling story that children could understand and question. G2 didn't really have those questions at all, nothing to chew on and continue to follow the story/buy more sets.

    Something I didn't realize until recently is that Teridax has an almost literal god-complex; he's just one of many Makuta who exist in the MU, and not even their original leader, but by the time of the Toa Nuva on Mata Nui he has taken to calling himself and the Great Spirit as brothers.

    Metru Nui of 2004 is, in my opinion and the opinion of some others on UA-cam, the prime of Bionicle. Nick on Planet Ripple said it best: "These weren't your typical Toa, the setting was like Valhalla or Olympus. By the time these new heroes were summoned it was already too late. They were never going to save the city. but their job wasn't by protect a few buildings. Their job was to get their people off the sinking ship, the enemy had taken everything from them but they had won by surviving. Lego doesn't do stories like this."
    Metru Nui and it´s arc are kinda underrated in most fans eyes, especially how much emphasis fans put on the tribal island arc of the early years of Bionicle, putting it on a pedestal. I would love it if more fans appreciated Metru Nui, it aint a typical futuristic city with robots like Cybertron, It has elements of cyberpunk, biopunk, steampunk, art deco, neo-classical, industrial, brutalist, neo-futurism, and ofc the mystical to it. I especially like how quickly they fleshed out the area, giving the city and its people their own culture thats unique while still familiar to us who saw the tribes on Mata Nui. The different district specializations, the different jobs, the district rivalries, the historic turmoils, sports and recreation, and even sorta religious aspects with the Toa Temple and Knowledge Towers, seeking guidance and understanding from some higher energy. Cant get enough of Metru Nui and I hope we see more fan projects exploring this island city.

    I remember there is a hint to Mata-Nui's true nature in one of the mnog games. I think Nuparu or Onepu dug down really deep and hit metal. In retrospect, this was a huge hint, but of course nobody suspected it at the time. Most probably thought that the metal they hit was a Bohrok nest. Anyways, this early instance of foreshadowing is reminiscent of some of the big reveals in Stranger Things, where something is discovered about the past, or true nature of the status quo. I just think it's such a great moment in Bionicle history that not many people talk about.

  • @aster6000
    @aster6000 Рік тому +27

    It's incredibly ingenious the more you think about it. And the most fascinating thing is how natural it all comes together, we tend so much to think of opposites like technology and biology, evolution and creation, spirituality and science, but don't realize how not only can one not exist without the other, they often have a part of the other at their core (something something yin and yang). It just takes someone to take a big step back and look at our universe as a whole to realize that they are all linked. And like piling up a perfect quadrouple headshot, Bionicle's story pierces through each bubble at once, it's truly a masterful story. Not bad for a toy line eh..

    My favourite war personnally the mystic one : when I saw the movie The Mask of Light, I was feeling like I was watching a modern mythology movie, just as you saif.

I also like how they were able to integrate the lore with some sets, things like the Toa Mata canisters, the Bohrok resting in their canisters and the upgraded 2003 matoran. On the other hand, I feel like G2 wasn't able to do it as well. It focused mostly on the mystical and balance aspects. There's a lot of concept art for the natural side, but in the end I think there wasn't a true connection between the biological and mechanical.

    I've always thought of Bionicle as having one of the most unique settings I've ever seen in fiction, and this video right here does an excellent job revealing just why it felt that way to me, bravo!
    I must say, I particularly like how Bionicle recognizes that technology and nature/biology/the environment are not inherently at odds with one another. Technology after all is the archetypical tool in of itself, and tools are inherently neutral, only depending on how they are used, more importantly however would be that technology is merely the application of our scientific knowledge, and said knowledge is based on our understanding of the laws of nature itself which notably challenges the notion of technology being "unnatural". In fact I think Bionicle does an excellent job challenging this notion too with its biomechanical protagonists and mata nui as you've described here.

    It manages to blend a narrative interpersonal relationships with themes of creation, and how self-actualization is achieved in part by the pursuit of creation, and the strengthening of bonds. All viewed through a lens formed of a blend of the concept of roles in video games with narrative archetypes, with patterns of thought and behavior in one's psychology, with the basic structures of building a story.
    And it's presented in the form of a multimedia webcomic pretending to be a text-based adventure game.

The perfect blending, if not total solution, of the thematic elements is what elevates Bionicle in my mind to be THE greatest fictional world ever written! Even if we don’t get a return to G1 proper, I think the story deserves to be told again today. While I love the different adventures into so many mediums, it does make following the story hard, especially closer to the beginning. TV show, movie, whathaveyou, it needs to be seen and read again, passed down each generation after the next like the great epics. It’s a modern mythology, one that encapsulates themes so perfectly I haven’t seen it done before or since.

    The Destiny games are the closest thing I've seen to Bionicle's depth in recent years. Not only is there an abundance of overlap in the characters (Mata Nui = The Traveler, Makuta = The Darkness, Toa = Guardians, Bohrok = Vex, Rahkshi = Hive, etc.) but also in the worldbuilding. Destiny proposes that our reality was the byproduct of clashing mathematical ideologies (The Light of biodiversity and complexity vs The Darkness of death and efficiency.)
    What we would call "Space Magic" is really just beings imbued with a deeper understanding of these universal forces, harnessing String Theory, Spacetime, and Thermodynamics for attack and defense. The mission of both franchises' heroes is healing their deity by rebalancing the world, and a journey of self-discovery (the Guardians and Toa Mata awakened with no memories of their own pasts, but were hailed as saviors by the first citizens they meet.)

    On the topic of the video, I've long interpreted the concept of "Destiny" in Bionicle to be a term used for programming and directives coded into the denizens of the MU, especially the Matoran. For example the idea of certain Matoran being destined to become Toa always seemed to me like part of their programming that would allow that transformation to occur.

      @@heroranuva8295 But there _has_ to be more to Destiny than even that - we must remember that the entity that ist connected the strongest to Destiny - Energized Protodermis - also affects naturally biological beings like Agori & Glatorian. But if it's some sort of natural force, then why are "nanotech" affected by it?
      My take on that would be that it is simply because they are made of Protodermis themselves. But - and that is one of my biggest gripes with the BIONICLE canon - Greg stated that "regular" Protodermis is not derived from the energized variant - even though it makes _so_ _much_ _sense_! Really, the terms we use are misnomers - "Energized" Protodermis is really the regular form, and "normal" Protodermis should be some sort of stable, powered-down form of programmable matter derived from it, which the GBs synthesized after the discovery of EP and then went on to use it to realize their "Giant Robot" project.
      tl;dr: My point is that the question of what the nature of Destiny in BIONICLE is is intrinsically linked to what the nature of Protodermis is. :)

    As others have said, G2 lacked the mystery and intrigue to keep kids in the story and buying more sets. They probably expected the older generation to either buy the most sets (why they used the same original characters) or spread the word themselves (as there was so little promotional stuff out there for g2). As much as lego sets are amazing building experiences, children tell stories with their toys no matter if there is one or not, so having one helps the kids get and stay invested. Lego seems to have realized this somewhat, with the city sets having named characters and the amount of licenced themes. The story I feel is what truly gets new minds into Lego these days with all the technology they're consuming. You can make and build your own stories alongside the ones premade now, instead of building a toy and rebuilding. Kids these days are far different than back then, and need something more to chew on than just a well-made toy. They need an experience.

    Another awesome video - great to see you back! :)
    Regarding your question about other franchises besides the ones you mentioned that manage to blend some of these 4 pillars you have listed, I can think of a few:
    Magic: The Gathering comes closest I think. Central to the lore is a multiverse of countless worlds/dimensions ("planes") infused with magical energy ("mana"), which can only be traversed by powerful beings called Planeswalkers, which therefore usually end up playing central roles in multiverse-spanning conflicts that threaten the stability thereof (The Great Mending of Dominaria for instance is an event that feels very similar to when Mata Nui / the MU was healed by Matoro's use of the Ignika). They are often powerful mages with sometimes near-godly powers, and are therefore often the subjects of legend and myth, or at least influential historical figures. (There's even a kind of superhero team of planeswalkers called the Gatewatch which honestly has a very similar vibe to a Toa Team :D) But high technology ("artifice") also plays a big part in the lore and is a major representative of "colorless" mana (often referred to as the sixth type of mana). What is lacking a bit is the biological, but even of that you can find a bit in concepts like worldsouls or avatars.
    Speaking of, Avatar (the Nickelodeon one, not the James Cameron one (though that has an interesting blend of land, biology, and myth as well with Eywa the living planet-goddess - though it generally depicts technology as an opposing force instead of harmonizing them)) comes to mind as well. The four elements have clear geographical ties with the four nations and are of course also very mythologically relevant - as with the legends of the first benders, the lion turtles, and of course the Avatar themselves. Again, the biological aspect is somewhat lacking, though spirituality and bending is shown to have clear ties to bodily functions and control.
    Pokémon puts great emphasis on biology, but more in the context of evolution and ecology than internal physiology. It also has a solid mythology surrounding the origins of the creatures and their world. The technological aspect is represented by machines like Pokéballs, devices of capturing and taming magical creatures that are deeply connected to the land and the world.
    Stargate is a franchise that deeply investigates real-world mythology and explains it through a combination of advanced science & tech used by extraterrestrials but also actual spiritual development ("ascension") which yields great powers, including manipulation of physics and the environment. At multiple points in the series, high-tech devices meant to assist the user in achieving spiritual enlightenment are depicted. There is even a species of machines that attempts to achieve ascension by uploading themselves into subspace at one point.
    The Legend of Zelda has a mythology that spans over 10,000 years of in-universe time, and has recently (i.e. in Breath of the Wild) depicted a very high level of tech that beautifully contrasts with the rather rural, wild, untamed landscape of post-apocalyptic Hyrule (--> very much island of Mata Nui vibes at some points). There are even giant machines resembling animals ("Divine Beasts") that Link has to physically enter to free them of Ganon's corruption - very much as if exorcising Teridax from a mini-MU. :D
    I've also heard that Xenoblade has very similar themes and lore to BIONICLE, but I haven't played that so I can't really comment on it.
    Just some examples I could think of. Ultimately, none of them manage to blend all four of them as centrally and evenly as BIONICLE managed to, imo. Still great storise tho! :)

This can easily be compared with Makuta desiring the power of the GSR.

    One comparison thats niche enough that I don't blame anyone for not thinking of it, but is entwined thematically and aesthetically with bionicle very hard, would be warframe, I'd say. Just the vibe alone shows the comparison

    Something I'd like to be explored is the concept of Destiny. The other two of the three virtues are pretty clear: Unity if we stand together things go well, Duty if we don't take responsibility and do our job the universe is literally going to die, but Destiny? It clearly isn't something like pre-determined future because alternate timelines are a thing so what is it?

    • @heroranuva8295
      @heroranuva8295  Рік тому +3

      Oh Destiny is SUCH an interesting topic in Bionicle, like there are so many interpretations of it in the fandom and how its presented in story is deeply fascinating. I actually do have a video on that I hope to get out in maybe a month or two. But for me, Destiny feels like a virtue because its about striving towards higher purpose. It doesn't seem to be pre-determined to me, though there are arguements for it, but I mostly think about it as the idea of life mission. It interweaves the idea of machine purpose and also cosmic fate, because to them, those are the same thing!

    13:00 Now I have to think of the new Disney movie "Strange World".
    Did you see it? It also has environmentalist messages and the place where the main story takes place is a huge living creature, which they don't know about at first.
    Inside the huge creature, there is some parasite, some plant. But this plant represents technology, since it's used to generate electricity in this world.
    And so the rest is done like it's done in regular stories and they have to decide between nature or technology.
    What makes this all worse: Both creatures are living beings in the end. And even if the huge creature is the creature they live on, we never know, why it has to be saved. It never does anything useful for the protagonists, while the parasite is their main source of energy.
    Besides that, they even play a board game before killing the creature. It's about creating a sustainable ecosystem, and when any of the creatures is killed, everything goes wrong and you basically lose the game. So it was very weird, why they added this board game, when the solution to the main conflict is killing one of the creatures.
    It seems like they only wanted to get across as many "moral" messages, but they weren't able to present their morals in a way that still works well in the story.

    If I were to list off other franchises that blend various themes together that would usually be considered as contradicting, I'd bring up Halo, as it's got themes of ancient aliens who's technology was so alien that is seems mysterious and magical compared to the technology level of the in-game present by both human and covenant forces. But I'd go one step further by bringing up Destiny, a franchise that blends magical elements, an eternal conflict between Light and Dark, the deeper themes of if using powers of darkness are intrinsically evil or not, approaching themes of forgiveness, racism, redemption, acceptance. While dealing in story genres like psychological horror, medieval fantasy, or time travel Sci fi, never able to actually contradict itself

      You are saying that you are working in the video of the Matoran virtues?
      Destiny seems to be the most difficult virtue to follow. Cant stop thinking on Matoro`s sacrifice to save the universe from destruction, and other examples of great Toa (Lhikan in the movie and Jaller 2003) as well.

      @heroranuva8295  Рік тому

      @@bestbioplayer8414 Destiny is definitely the most complex of the three, since it is deliberately ambiguous and has many interpretations. In particular, destiny is both a virtue to follow and also a cosmic force that shapes the characters' lives, but both deal with the idea of purpose in life. I actually plan on doing two videos, one showing the Three Virtues, and analyzing destiny as a virtue, and another specifically on destiny analyzing it as a force that shapes the lives of characters

      Yes please explain the three virtues according to you, and i will be more than pleased to listen.
      Thinking carefully, the three virtues are indeed connected, because Duty leads to Destiny, that makes sence. And not all the Bionicle characters haves the same virtues to follow, for example, the Piraka have noone, because during my reading in one of the books, i noticed that Hakann`s virtues was all about him and just him. And in the Movie Mask of Light Makuta said to Takanuva "My Duty is to the Mask of Shadows".
