Great video Brian and I'd definitely be interested in watching a video about "How to make a monster". It would be even better if you were able to provide some guidance/advice on how to tailor that to specific editions as well. After playing & DMing 2nd edition for years I've only ever created 1 monster for that edition as I don't really feel confident in getting it right (plus with all the monster books & supplements released for 2e one almost has too many monsters to choose from, lol) but I'm sure you get my point :)

Teos from Alpha Stream reverse engineered the 2024 average statistics for each CR with some great comparisons to 2014, Volo’s/Morde’s and forge of foes. You could maybe use that table to get a feel for a “make your own monster” section. It’s spreadsheet wizardry!

Are orcs still monsters?

Maybe utility wise it’ll be good but i’m beyond disappointed with the changs to certain creatures being replaced by generic NPC statblocks like the lizardfolk or deep dwarves for example. That and the resistance changes as well as the race changes (for example) all of the elves you meet being fey but player versions count as humanoid.

There's that old legend of a changeling. Where fae replace a baby with one of their own, magically disguised to look like the baby. So it would be funny to have the heir that was kidnapped, not even be the real heir to begin with. Adds layers to the plot.

This is fun, but I would definitely add a twist that the heir wasn't actually kidnapped, but sought out a shapeshifter to replace them so that they could elope with a commoner or some such.

I preface this by saying I won't buy any of the new books until I can get them second hand, but I might give it resistance to fire damage. For 1, fireball is the obvious panic response/hasty solution of most spellcasters that want to just do big damage and end combat quickly. For another, it's a fungus that consumes decaying flesh, it's gonna be a bit juicy.

If my party saw these, we'd probably turn right around. As a DM, I'm not changing a thing about the Violet Fungus Necrohulk. The characters with high Strength get to shine as they avoid being yoinked and can easily dislodge caught allies. Don't have a guy with high Strength? That sounds like a "you" problem and not a "Necrohulk" problem.

I could see these as being natural enemies of myconid colonies. Although an uninformed adventurer might not understand the difference between the two. Gonna have to translate this to 3.5 for use in my campaign.

The very first campaign I played in started with a similar premise. We went through the portal, and after our first adventure, we managed to disrupt the magic keeping the portal open but were trapped in the new world. It became our campaign world, and we were trying to find our way home. Sadly, our DM stopped being ablento DM for us, and the campaign didn't go much farther. It was a great start though.

If adventurers came across a group of necrohulks, I’d have them in the act of fighting each other before the adventurers approach and discover them. Rather than having multiple of these shroomy abominations attacking the adventurers, I’d instead provide the challenge of sneaking past them without taking secondary damage from the chaotic nature of the hulk fight. I would just need to come up with some reason why the adventurers could. It turns out around and leave the way they came. These monsters remind me of the Elvish Abomination in MtG.

This reminds me of "Fringe" As for fleshing this out... cultists. Have cultists fighting for wanting the merge i.e. end of the world loonies. THAT should keep them busy for a while. Not to mention you can go full Branch Davidians
