    This does not work very well because of how closely related a dragon’s color is to its breath weapon. It has become a somewhat staple that X color has a breath weapon that deals X type damage. To change the dragon’s damage type on a whim simply makes it feel like players were cheated out, since all norms and logic would indicate that a red dragon would breathe fire. But what I think is a good way to do this is instead have it be a Green Dragon, known for deception and scheming, be under an illusion to make it appear red, that way it can drop the illusion mid-fight and make a lot more sense to the players.

    • @gamemasters
      @gamemasters День тому

      having a green dragon be a trickster is a good idea. But.. in our instance of a red dragon breathing poison.. I'm working on a video that explains how and what the DM can do to provide "foreshadow" and "context" and "clues".

    However, if you're going to do that, you also need to give your player hints about this instead of going "lel, you die now". Maybe the lair isn't consistent with a red dragon's lair. Maybe they encounter the remnants of a previous meal of the dragon. Maybe a survivor from an attack tells them there's something strange. Maybe it's a crossbreed of dragons, spoken of in some tomes. Otherwise, it's just bad storytelling and the equivalent of a bakery-pull.

    • @gamemasters
      @gamemasters 2 дні тому

      ehh... if the players are big enough to walk into a dragon's lair.. regardless of the type.. I mean... c'mon.. life has surprises and not all areas of a fantasy environment are safe.. Sometimes you gotta put something out there as a means to figure out an alternative....

    • @lyravain6304
      @lyravain6304 День тому

      @@gamemasters Sure, but if they walk into a dragon, one assumes that they've done their homework. Red dragons breathe fire, so their preparation would include consumables to deal with that. And, of course, pre-battle buffing would be of the same kind. They wouldn't bring fire-based spells or weapons that add fire damage to their Fighter's attacks. But when you, as the DM, arbitrarily go "yeah he's a red dragon, but this one spits acid instead of fire", with no explanation or hints to it, you've dropped your DMing to the level of Shamallan. You Shamallan-ized your story. Which is why, when you want to do things like this, you either let players know "in this world, red dragons breathe acid" ahead of time or, if you want this to be a special dragon, you provide hints and indications that this dragon is special BEFORE they do the encounter. And hey, if your players are basically Batman-in-DnD and over-prep themselves for upcoming battles, that's good planning on their end. They should be rewarded for forward thinking, predicting and planning things instead of just "yeah, whatever happens, happens, who cares". Adventurers would 1000% pre-plan for a fight with a dragon, not just go in "eh, it'll work out". By suddenly throwing random changes to established monsters, you're punishing them for roleplaying adventurers and paying attention. Plus, for some reason, you come across as a "DM against the PCs" in your reply. Hope I got that wrong, though.

      I think that a whole lot of interpretation is taking place from an 18 second slice of video, because yes, there is A LOT more to it than just these presented 18 seconds. I'll also throw this out there.. A) not all encounters are meant to be combat driven. B) What if the red dragon is infected with this slaad tadpole and begs the characters to remove it, in exchange it will give to them a portion of it's treasure or otherwise help them in the future, or is that also not right because red dragons are chaotic evil. Bottom line is, a lot of assumption has been made when the context has not been presented. That said, I'm working on a "red dragon that breaths poison" context video. :)

    • @lyravain6304
      @lyravain6304 День тому

      @@gamemasters Well, I can only render my opinion on the 18 seconds I was given. A) If the players wanna do combat, they're gonna do combat. On their heads be it. B) Eh, Red Dragons are insanely arrogant and would 100% backstab the players. After all, sure, it can give them a portion of its treasure but that doesn't mean it can't eat them and take the treasure back. Chaotic Evil doesn't mean Chaotic Stupid. Besides, yeah, you can DEFINITELY make a Red Dragon that breathes anything, that was never the problem. The issue is giving your players, who aspire to be Dragon-slayers, enough tips for them to prepare properly instead of just pulling it out of nowhere. For instance, it could just very well be a souped up Dragon's Breath spell. Or the Dragon might have TWO bloodlines. Or it could be an experiment. Or it might have just spent some time in a different Elemental Plane (for whatever reason) and absorbed some of the elemental power there. It could have also just done a great or impressive enough service for Tiamat that she gave the Dragon a boon of more power. It could also NOT be a dragon, but an automaton of sorts, a quasi-resurrected ex-dragon that an Artificer/Necromancer/BBEG brought back, cobbled together and is using like their own private Kaiju (and some of the original Dragon's soul might still be around, plotting or even agreeing with this), sort of a still-fleshy Dracolich.

    • @gamemasters
      @gamemasters День тому

      @lyravain6304 I do agree with you (and i love the concept of the still fleshy dracolich) that context needs to be there, and it likely would be. Along with clues and other strong hints. I mean, at the end of the day, if I'm going to even have a dragon in the game, it's going to be a core focus and the main subject, so 100% there would be indications along the way for the players to figure out the "puzzle".

    Have the party be sent to kill a green dragon, only for it to turn out to be a copper dragon so ancient that its scales are completely coated in verdigris. After either a very one-sided battle in which it spares your party, or if you dont have a bunch of murderhobos, an actual conversation in which it is revealed that it doesn't want to fight and is something of a guardian for the region, have an extended plot of figuring out why someone was trying to have the party kill a benevolent metallic dragon, and have _them_ be the real BBEG.

    Wow...the comments... This is a field of 5E'ers! This kind of "modding" was done all the time in previous editions, and its how and WHY adventurers use to use up their gold hiring Hirelings/Followers, so that they can be ready for anything, and so as to equip as much variance as possible! If this change is "unfair" to you, you need to learn about the history of the game you play! LMFAO!!!

    • @GaleGrim
      @GaleGrim 2 дні тому

      History dose not dictate the present beyond causality, just because it was that way in the past doesn't mean it should be now, or that it shouldn't change. It can still be unfair even if it happened in previous editions. Let's face it, older D&D was/is a mess in a lot of ways. Telegraphing a red dragon and then making it poison currently breaks against the lore and also is a middle finger to a party doing the smart thing and playing with damage type and resistances. It's letting the party waste valuable table time on a strat that won't work and will feel unsatisfying. It's a hazard a DM runs into when they try and do something unexpected. Unexpected isn't always better.

    While I understand that you're saying the form a magic item takes can be changed, (my personal favorite is reflavoring the slippers of spider climbing to boots of spider climbing) I dont think this is a good idea in general. Using your example, if I turn my cloak of protection to boots of protection, that allows that player to combine those boots of protection with another cloak of protection, and even a ring of protection, for a cumulative +3 bonus to AC and all saving throws. Especially if you allow players to change magic items at will, this could really cause balance issues that some DMs might not know how to deal with.

    • @gamemasters

      @gamemasters usually identical from effects don't stack, but notably, the ring of protection and cloak of protection do stack (because they have different names) so why wouldn't that also stack with boots of protection? I think that may feel weird and dissatisfying as a player.

    i'd rather tell them the dragon is violet and those damn stupid villagers were too afraid to make sure about what it was... having your expectations crushed for no reason is not fun as a player... last time a DM shut my group down because we had an amazing idea and he didn't liked the outcomes it would have gotten... i just turned into an npc, not willingly making anything exceptional, not proposing ideas, just checking the obvious tag. why bother?

    • @gamemasters
      @gamemasters 2 дні тому

      hmm.. I'm not sure how that would compel one to get shut down? Not all dragons of the same color breath the same type of damage, it's been like that since days of old D&D as well (specifically in Dragonlance). In a similar fashion, not all creatures of the same species are of the same alignment (ie not all orcs are evil).

    for me the answer is a yes but actually no. I like to think that buhamutt and tiatmat are similar to their counterparts, but they are not same. and the biggest proof of that is the level of divine power when compared to their counterpart, (forgotten realms being lesser deities). while the krynn counter parts are greater deities. I would like to think that they are the same in nature and form but not in power portfolio and purpose. which is why they carry a different name. think of them more alternate version of each other. but if Tiamat and Takhisis faced off Takhisis would win and absorb Tiamat divine portfolio and all of her avatars and divine power. to put simply Tiamat is a inferior version of Tahkisis.
