I had a group that would constantly find a solution to a problem I presented as a dungeon master with ideas that I did not think of. Or more likely that I published adventure did not account for. This taught me how to improvise a bit and also when to call a time out. I was upfront with the players and let them know they have found something I did not plan for. I needed to take a break figure out how to continue the story arch I was running. This would usually get a cheer out of the players and allow time for the players to get up and stretch without worrying about missing details.
aye, and I think that _that_ is what makes a good dm a great dm! The ability to run with what happens shows that you've got the player's wants and needs in mind while at the same time you want to maintain the core of what you've planned out. It's a win-win for all involved.
I remember when my party really thought the cult had their base in the sewers, there was an unrelated thing in a side quest which lend them to that thinking. They spent time searching the sewers and I decided to put an entrance to their base from the sewers haha. I also love going with the crazy moments if there are random crazy plans. Great video and good luck fixing the leaky pipes
@ at least it’s fixed, hopefully you can track down the source of the noise and get that fixed, or use it in your game…… um there is a sudden earthquake!
Ok, story time brace for a long post. It was several years ago while I was DMing a homebrew adventure centered around the players stoping a mind flayer from activating a long dormant arcane obilisk. Having detroyed the mechanism that powered the obilisk, they needed to take an elevator to a room at the top to finally confront the mind flayer and his minions. I placed a muffin button(this was right after Team Four Star did that joke) in the elevator as a way to dispense a box to the players they would need for a future encounter. As expected they pushed the button and got the box. They then pushed the button again and as a way to tell them there was nothing further of value, I had an ancient mummified muffin fall out. One of the players decided to eat the muffin and managed to pass their save to avoid getting sick. As soon as the elevator got to the top and the enemies were revealed but before I called for an initiative roll, the player who ate the muffin said "I fart". I made everyone, including the enemies roll a Fortitude save or be nauseated. Everyone but the mind flayer passed. The party absolutely destroyed the minions. By the time the mind flayer recovered, he was the last one standing and didn't manage to last more than one round with the entire party ganging up on him. It's been somewhere close to a decade and we still crack jokes about it. It has become one of our favorite memories of gaming. I say all this to drive the point home that we should embrace the wild and wacky things that happen at our tables because they are what might bring us the best memories.(edit: spelling)
i had a barbarian wrestle a dragon, he got lucky after a couple tries and got on it! The group had managed to get the jump on the dragon and had done a considerable amount of damage 😲 The dragon took to the air climbing at 80ft a round, the party let out a barrage of damage as he climbed, the barbarian held on, the dragon climbed. As the dragon was about to enter his 2nd round of climbing (flying) they reduced its HP to 0 🎉 The giant beast plummeted and died.... as the barbarian was also brought to 0 hp. The cleric revived him and everyone was pumped!! NOT what I had planned LOL but it was great fun! you nailed it!
LOL This almost exactly mimics what I pulled this from! Only difference is the barbarian failed a roll at one point and fell _off_ the dragon and hit the ground _then_ the party reduced the dragon to 0 and it fell _on top of_ the barbarian.. (we'll call the next part divine intervention) the barbarian, barely alive, hefted his sword skyward and sliced into the dragon's belly then cut his way out and walked out of it's mouth. Yeah, they still talk about that. :)
Yes improv is needed a lot of times DMing. I have a gnome barbarian in my 3.5 campaign with 26 strength that has ridden and helped kill a dragon, T-Rex and a kraken so far. I also had the party put black dragon that was polymorphed as a human in a force cube. They didn’t know he was a dragon, they thought he was a wizard helper, that totally wrecked my plans but I let them have it.
yeah, I think that's an important element too.. sometimes, as a DM, you gotta be willing to let your plans go sideways as most of the time that _does_ create additional fun.
Pipe licks can throw your plans off more than any unexpected player ideas for sure
Especially if it's rusty
Oh Hell yeah new GameMasters !!!!
Keep on rockin' in the free world dude !

I just improvise at this point, and after 30 years DMing I became very good at.
EXACTLY THIS!!!
@@gamemasters sadly it's wisdom achieved with exper, and hard to pass to others.
