Is it important for the future of the subculture to be a community? Let me know your opinion and if you agree with my hypotheses. #metalcommunity #metalheads #commentary

How much impact does it have on the environment? I'm touching on these issues in this video. Spoiler alert: capitalism might have to do with a lot of these issues. But what do you think? I'm a black, cis, straight male who's a goth/deathrocker, lots of women in my scene. But as a whole we're more gender fluid with fashion and expression of self. Most of the Goth Rock, Darkwave and Deathrock bands I listen to have a female vocalist. Also the scene has LGBTQ+, bipoc folks in it and is accepting. In contrast to the Metal scene (I enjoy the music) which is not always welcoming to others. Most people I have met at a show were okay but there were times I had been looked at in a way I found to be negative. (I'm black and muscular so I always stand out, but especially when you aren't what people expect to see at a show. You will really stand outif you are female in a male dominant space.) I find this to be true more so now in 2024 with the apathy towards conservative and bigoted beliefs. Though I have seen the younger generation pushing back. Perhaps there is hope. I typically just stay with my "tribe" as we don't tolerate that shit.

My main introduction was the Lost Highway soundtrack, which included Rammstein and Nine Inch Nails. As for "what is metal?" Subculture wise - a group of people who listen to Metal. Then you have to define the music, and here I can only quote some politician who said "I dont know how to define it, but I know when I see it" (he was talking about "obscene material" though). Its a terrible definition, but it is very easy to get bogged down in the minute details. I think the requirement of a string instrument like a guitar a commonly understood. But what about band only using bass buitars? What about lutes, or banjos? Is a real drumset required, or can it be subsituted by a synth? Lots of things to split hairs on.

"Boohoo, women are only valued for their looks", yeah because. they can't do anything else. Female bands suck, none of them can put out music as good as most male bands because metal is male, not female. There will never be a female Corpsegrinder. The closest the metal scene ever got was Som from Cerebral Bore and that band is dead. Women can cope all they want, but no female will ever be able to put out aggressive music like men can. Women will always be judged for their looks, because men want to fuck them (shocker), besides that they don't offer much anymore. You exist to complement men by giving birth, raising kids, cooking, cleaning and, most importanly, shutting the fuck up.

Metal is such a wide umbrella term that I don't think there's anything in particular that characterises it right now. You have bands with widely different sounds, views and styles that anybody could be a metalhead without anyone else realizing. Also, I feel like the gatekeep is what I find most prevalent, but the recommender algorithms in social media and web pages got much better at isolating ourselves from people with other musical taste, that it isn't as wild and annoying as it used to be a decade ago

Yeah I think online it can be easier now to just stay within your preferred niche, but at bigger festivals or gigs that's not really possible. Basically as soon as you have to interact with people in real life. And sometimes I feel like we're getting less and less used to that.

I think that it is very hard to define what Metal is, because of how big it got. I find it really interesting to compare the Metal genre to the EDM genre. It has many subgenres that can be very different and it became so big that there is not one distinct feature that unites every fan and their interests. For me personally the feature of metal that is most distinct is its motive to be different from others, but I feel like many features of metal support individualism as you pointed out in the video, therefore making it difficult to unite the fans. I suppose there are many features like the interest in black clothing, morbid symbols and lyrics, politics, and many more that overlap therefore creating maybe more like chains that hold some people together but these features are maybe not strong enough or its about the way Metal as a genre grew, that caused it to not have one uniting factor.

Any Metal fan that gate-keeps Metal isn't a real Metal fan... They're just an A-hole... Doesn't matter what sub-genre of metal you like. If you like metal, you like metal. Everyone has prefences. If someone doesn't recognize that, they're just dumb.

Metal will survive because it does touch some basic emotion of human experience. You are correct about the gate keeping, some of the stupidest arguments I have heard are about who is real metal and who is not. I think each band develops a tribe of individual tastes and feelings. Metal evolves and fuses with other style of music. Just as we have fusion cuisine in restaurants we have fusion metal. Because metal is very much for the individual it allows for more evolution. More evolution equals more "New" sounds which will always have a push back.

I would say the defining factor for metal is heavy music, which doesn't necessarily need to be death metal heavy. But it could also be emotionally heavy by confronting emotions such as anger, sadness, and even happiness depending on the subgenre. Also, I would say the dark, mysterious and alternative aesthetic could be another defining factor.

Just let people be what they wanna be, like what they wanna like and do what they wanna do (as long as it isn't harmful to others) and keep your nose by yourself. So sad, that so many human beings don't get such a simple thing. But if we really wanna talk about what "trve" metal is: Something between Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden. Everything is political. Literally. Trying to "keep politics" out of something is impossible. If you don't care what the opinions of artists are, good for you, it's not about censoring them it's about knowing who you're potentially supporting and calling people out if they are being assholes. You can listen to music without agreeing with the musician, but it doesn't make the opinion less problematic and if you "don't care" or say it's "apolitical" you're just being ignorant on purpose.

In my experience, women have always liked other musical genres, pop singers "divas" and music that you can dance to, more than rock and metal. And that's fine. I'm a man and I prefer to listen to a man singing. If women prefer to listen to women, I think that's perfectly natural. People like to form groups with whom they are similar, according to their age, sex, or whatever. So maybe we are all sexist and our ears are sexist. So what? And music has changed. Some genres and subgenres emerge, others decline. In the 80s women liked glam (hair) metal, but now it's a genre that people make fun of. That's why glam metal never came back. There is no place for new metal or rock bands on MTV or radio stations. And metal in general has become more extreme in the last 30 years. All this makes rock and metal less popular than ever. That's why only bands like Metallica, Iron Maiden, Guns N Roses, Acdc and Ozzy Osbourne can play in large stadiums and arenas. Once they retire, no one will take up their space. Everything will be over. And many kids think that rock and metal are genres for older people, the genres your father or grandfather would listen to. All this is what excludes women from rock and metal.

As i have seen people targeting for liking certain bands and subgenres. Meanwhile we have people who pretend to not like something because they fear their buddies will call them posers. I think that's being a poser if you have to pretend you're not into something. Most average person doesn't care about metal and they're not desperate to come into the scene. I think those who believe there is some huge queue of people lining up to pretend to be into metal, obviously don't get out much. They're the types who have bad hygiene and should worry more about that than posers. Take a shower or bath and stop judging people for liking different bands.

If anyone doesn’t think women are treated harsher if they don’t look like the Hollywood version of a “goth girl”. Regardless of if they’re an artist or a fan. Then you have great drugs. Over 30 years ago. I was one of many men that said something similar to. Checkout that band, they have a chick singer/guitarist/drummer/whatever. Or checkout that band, they’re all hot chicks. Now I couldn’t care less if a band has a woman or a guy. As long as it hits my ears right. Am I perfect about not judging a band based on gender? Not at all. Also, the marketing of a lot of bands. That have women in them. Don’t do anything to help portray the women as anything more than objects to be desired.
