Though provoking video as always and apologies for the incoming essay.
I think the phrase 'I listen to everything' that is often the answer you get when asking about music taste is technically true these days, as in most people will genuinely listen to a variety of genres, but if they're more of a casual listener they won't explore very far outside corporatized major label artists, usually having one of two outliers they've heard on ads and the like.
I'd say the biggest reason for this is music streaming shifting peoples listening habits more around self made or algorithmic playlists, as opposed to curated radio stations or albums. I have noticed however that while your more metal-core and nu metal orientated harsh vocals are often embraced by most people, the moment someone who isn't really into extreme metal hears a death metal styled guttural false chord or a black metal fry scream they still react with confusion and abject horror. Similarly because mainstream music tends to be pretty homogenous when it comes to hyper polished / 'everything must be perfect to an almost robotic degree' production, I think noisy, lo-fi, or just in-perfect production in general tends to drive people away (I'm looking at you 'modern metal' fans), which is a shame because I think that's where you find the most unique and creatively produced albums.
As for my music taste as you'd expect of most people it's all over the place, I'd say if I hear something and immediately think 'this was written and produced solely to sell well' I won't don't enjoy it, and gravitate to what I find to be more honest and sincere (both in terms of recorded format and live performance).
As for goofy combinations, two of my favourite albums from this year so far have been Shame by meth. and Gemelo by Angelica Garcia, and as someone who spends way to much money going to gigs and festivals my summer started with Maybeshewill / Bossk, into Yuele, into Fortress Festival (UK Black Metal festival with the likes of Wolves in the Throne Room, Ultha, Panopticon, Blackbraid's first uk showing... It's a ridiculously stacked line up, I could go on forever), into Beth Gibbons followed the next day by The Armed.

Thanks for your comment, I think you made some interesting points here.
I agree that most people who listen to "everything" often don't listen to the more extreme ends. But this is probably tied to the point that they might be more used to the high-production, polished sound of many commercially successful bands. As a DIY musician myself I do like this imperfect sound, but I'd probably not be used to it if I didn't listen to our own music and the music of other "underground" bands. So I'm wondering if those people would be less put off by e.g. gnarly gutturals if the music sounded super polished. I think it would remove some of the harshness and raw feel of the music which might make it more appealing but of course would be a bummer because it would make it less "emotional". Anyway, it seems both of us don't like over-polished music :D

I agree it's partially about being tired of being put into a box. Like you know what I'll like what I like and I refuse to be ashamed about it any more.
Edit: also agree it's important to listen to different genres. Same goes for other art mediums like writing cinematography etc

I mostly listen to metal music, but I'm also a big fan of retro wave pop music🙂

To paraphrase Blues Brothers, I listen to both types of music -- techdeath and brutal death.
Yes yes, that was a joke. I also listen to quite a bit of deathcore. 🙂
(Also, americana, avant garde jazz, folk, etc.)

I've met a few people who can't name a favorite musician or a favorite song, and don't know anything about music. I just feel sorry for them.

I had a friend whose music collection consisted of a few random cds on the floor of his car that were left there by other people.
