I think that it is very hard to define what Metal is, because of how big it got. I find it really interesting to compare the Metal genre to the EDM genre. It has many subgenres that can be very different and it became so big that there is not one distinct feature that unites every fan and their interests. For me personally the feature of metal that is most distinct is its motive to be different from others, but I feel like many features of metal support individualism as you pointed out in the video, therefore making it difficult to unite the fans. I suppose there are many features like the interest in black clothing, morbid symbols and lyrics, politics, and many more that overlap therefore creating maybe more like chains that hold some people together but these features are maybe not strong enough or its about the way Metal as a genre grew, that caused it to not have one uniting factor.

Metal will survive because it does touch some basic emotion of human experience. You are correct about the gate keeping, some of the stupidest arguments I have heard are about who is real metal and who is not. I think each band develops a tribe of individual tastes and feelings. Metal evolves and fuses with other style of music. Just as we have fusion cuisine in restaurants we have fusion metal. Because metal is very much for the individual it allows for more evolution. More evolution equals more "New" sounds which will always have a push back.

I went straight to it. Linkin Park, Evanescence, Slipknot, Rammstein, Nightwish, Apocalyptica. All of them I started to listen when I was around 10. Twenty years ago

I would say the defining factor for metal is heavy music, which doesn't necessarily need to be death metal heavy. But it could also be emotionally heavy by confronting emotions such as anger, sadness, and even happiness depending on the subgenre. Also, I would say the dark, mysterious and alternative aesthetic could be another defining factor.

Being a metal head is to tap in all the pools of metal... I might not like your type of metal but if you dig it great .... metal is not a religion to follow a certain way saying you go off course you'll be going to pop hell... like what you like but don't be upset if I don't like it... be metal

Metal is such a wide umbrella term that I don't think there's anything in particular that characterises it right now. You have bands with widely different sounds, views and styles that anybody could be a metalhead without anyone else realizing. Also, I feel like the gatekeep is what I find most prevalent, but the recommender algorithms in social media and web pages got much better at isolating ourselves from people with other musical taste, that it isn't as wild and annoying as it used to be a decade ago

Yeah I think online it can be easier now to just stay within your preferred niche, but at bigger festivals or gigs that's not really possible. Basically as soon as you have to interact with people in real life. And sometimes I feel like we're getting less and less used to that.

Gatekeeping is one of the dumbest things ever. Just let people be what they wanna be, like what they wanna like and do what they wanna do (as long as it isn't harmful to others) and keep your nose by yourself. So sad, that so many human beings don't get such a simple thing.
But if we really wanna talk about what "trve" metal is: Something between Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden. Everything after that is just building on these foundations, just as they themselves built on rock, which was built on blues and so on and so forth...

Yes individuality. What you preach here has nothing to do with that, quite the opposite. Also there is no "the metal". It's just the overarching term for a boatload of creative sub-genres of every possible variety.
My condolences to you, for being trapped in such a limited mindset, I hope you get the chance to grow into a decent human being sometimes in the future.

My main introduction was the Lost Highway soundtrack, which included Rammstein and Nine Inch Nails.
As for "what is metal?" Subculture wise - a group of people who listen to Metal. Then you have to define the music, and here I can only quote some politician who said "I dont know how to define it, but I know when I see it" (he was talking about "obscene material" though). Its a terrible definition, but it is very easy to get bogged down in the minute details. I think the requirement of a string instrument like a guitar a commonly understood. But what about band only using bass buitars? What about lutes, or banjos? Is a real drumset required, or can it be subsituted by a synth? Lots of things to split hairs on.

Any Metal fan that gate-keeps Metal isn't a real Metal fan... They're just an A-hole...
Doesn't matter what sub-genre of metal you like. If you like metal, you like metal. Everyone has prefences. If someone doesn't recognize that, they're just dumb.

I feel like the metal community in general has always had a lot of intolerant manchilds. In my experience, things got a lot more tolerant recently, but at the same time I'm aware of how good current recommendation systems work, so it might just be me being put in a safe space with more tolerant people just because of what I like in music

      Yes exactly.
Genres are purely semantics. The emotions and lifestyles are what usually is much more definable but still it really does not matter, if someone is metal or not.
Or if someone even listens to metal or not.
