Not true. Just been to a festival over the weekend, quite some musicians in the audience, too. Biggest collection of hc poser shit in a while. All the hero talk blablabla. Germans are even the worst. Most often they cannot even back up their stupid stories (unlike Australians, mental nutcases - but hardly any posers). So if there's a fake ass poser ever, it likely being a German. Just remember mid to late 1990ies. We *all* know what bands they listened to and even worse those bands they played in. It's embarassing.
Calling people and bands posers was such a thing when I was young! I had a lot of black metal elitists in my sphere and there are actually a lot of bands I used to only listen to in secret because I wanted to be accepted by them. Oh man, being a teenager was so rough. 😅
Yes, I experienced that too. Even worse if you liked a catchy pop song. I'd even listen to Fergalicious on low volume in my room just in case someone passed by our house. The things you worry about when you're young... 😂
I made that argument not long ago that using the poser term is something young people do. when you get older you shouldn't give a fuck what anyone else is listening to. It's music, like what you like, hate what you hate, and let others do the same. The amount of people that threw hate at me and told me to grow up and that I'm a poser for feeling that way was ridiculous. But I stand by it. I called people posers when I was high school. I grew out of it, and anyone who is an adult should too. Same as I refrain from saying bands suck now, I just accept that certain things aren't to my taste. I fucking hate Deathcore, Metalcore, and Emo with an unrivaled passion, but I don't say it sucks...it's just not to my taste.
I used to be called a black metal elitist as I used to joke about people who either only knew famous heavy / thrash metal bands such as Iron Maiden, Kreator or Metallica or only listened to hardcore / metalcore bands...
...unitl I was called a poser myself because I don't identify as a satanist. Which is already ridiculous simply because satanism / anti-christianity only make up a fraction of the lyrical themes of black metal. And even if it was the only thing the subgenre was about, what's wrong with just liking the music without actually wanting to burn down churches?

in the usage of the word "poser" i would only have to use that if someone is wearing a band shirt without at least checking the band out first or if they were wearing a band shirt thinking its a brand- like the people that wear the metallica shirts and think its a brand- even then id just try to educate them slightly :,,)

im a late 30s dude, who wore the metal "uniform" as a teenager. You know the cliche, long hair, black clothes and studs. I still listen to metal to this day, however I thought it was kinda funny when I went to a metal show recently. People wore this "uniform" to this concert, but I bet that the very next day they changed their clothes to basic fashion. I got odd looks since I went with normal fashion clothes. Some people even "shit-tested" me if I knew the lyrics of the songs lol. When I was a youth, wearing a band t-shirt or metal fashion in general meant something. It was a statement of mindset kinda. Now some weeks ago, a influencer posted a picture of herself in what I presume is early 90s rock/metal fashion: GnR t-shirt, light toned jeans and a bikerjacket. I bet alot that she doesnt even listen to GnR, if so its just Paradise City, etc. or Metallica - Enter Sandman/Whiskey in the jar lol. Anyways, has the metalfashion just become some sort of carnival outfit for occasions? cause that is what my experience sadly tells me. Im open to be wrong or what ever.
Mid-30's dude here, went through a similar phase when I was younger. You're definitely not wrong. I used to go out of my way to show people just how "metal af" I was until I had a dude be an elitist asshole to me at a bar. I told him that I liked Opeth's Heritage album, and from that point on, he'd use that as an insult if I ever said something he didn't agree with. I guess that interaction made me realize that maybe I come off that way to other people, and I don't ever want to be "that guy" again.
These days when go out/go to shows, if I'm not wearing a band shirt, it's either something horror-themed or otherwise ironic/funny. Those tend to spark conversations, lol. I went to see Eyehategod and Goatwhore last year, and King Parrot was opening for them. I was wearing my Frankenhooker shirt, standing in line at the door and Ari from KP saw my shirt and was like "Is that a band?" And from there we nerded out for a bit about B-horror movies, lol.
From my personal experience, we metalheads try to be little edge lords in our teens and 20's, but then gradually the novelty starts to wear off by the time we reach our early/mid 30's. At a certain point you start to realize it's kind of exhausting constantly keeping an image like that; or at least that's how it was for me.
I personally believe that the only true way to be a poser is to be only into thing for status and and not for genuine passion. You don't have to know everything about certain scene but at least be into it out of a genuine enjoyment or passion, instead of liking something because "it's popular". and I think this sentiment can also go for all other forms of media other than metal, like video games, anime, comics, movies, etc. What really defines one as a poser, is if they are not true to themselves and have no genuine interest in the form of media they claim to like
I look like a middle-aged, small town, working class, nondescript guy. Part of it by default, part of it on purpose. No one would ever know that I secretly listen to metal, unless I let them in on it.

i think in many cases being a poser and being a metalhead is the same thing. at least when you watch metal bands perform live or you focus on their aesthetics, many of them tend to create impressions of being evil/ tough/ brutal/ edgy/ vikings/ pirates/ satanists/ etc. and when you meet them in person, they are oftentimes nice and gentle (hopefully), working an office job, having a family, driving a subaru...all the "normie" things. so isn't that also some kind of poser behaviour? if so, we're all posers and every subculture is a cosplay competition 😁

Not very far from reality but also just false, because subcultures comprehend by more things than their cultural products (philosophy/ideology/cosmovision, customs, traditions, places; hence culture) and there is more to life than music. This was actually one of the things 2nd Wave BM was going against. By being genuinely evil and not just performing, there is coherence between your lifestyle and your persona. By not being false you are being true, thus "trve". And I say genuinely because these were no edgelords (like Glenn Benton), but people who actually believed and did those things on purpose.
I agree. I've only been into metal for a couple years, and have three decades of devotion to many other genres of music, so I have an outsider perspective on metal I guess. And from what I see, metalheads are maybe the most performative type of music fan. It's all pageantry and fantasy and external projection for others to see. I'm not hating! I've listened to almost nothing but metal for a couple years now and in that time have gradually developed more of an understanding and appreciation for the subculture as a whole. It's all good. But yeah, doesn't make much sense to me to discredit other people as posers when everyone is engaged in some degree of escapist pantomime here.

the ONE thing that pisses me off is when someone has only heard one band, usually one or two songs and claims they are an expert on the Metal so much that they go out of their way to talk down to other people about Metal, and then they'll proceed to call Metallica underground. . .
I wear skate shoes, hoodie and jeans, ive never bought a band shirt, i like playing vidya games, mucking around with cars, gardening, im 36 and ive been listning to all metal since i was 5. If it sounds good keep listening to it. Its your vibe. Fuck anyone who tells you what you should and shouldn't do or listen to.

Why, by only listening to what I listen to, obviously. My taste is peak, and everyone else's taste is trash. I must only listen to Bands with 5 Monthly Listeners on Spotify, bands that released one EP in the mid 2000's and then disappeared, and bands whose albums sound like they were recorded on Nokia phones in their parents garage which you can only find on UA-cam videos from 2007. Everything else is for posers.
Great video! I've never understood why someone not into metal would even want to pretend in order to impress metalheads... What do they gain from that? It's a relatively small scene made up of music geeks, it's not exactly where the "cool" kids are.

I am from Romania and for some reason at 16-17-18 yo I was kinda known into online metal spaces, at least within those around my age range (those born between 1995 and 2002, let's say). I used to manage some kinda big, really cringe, metal-related Facebook groups and pages as well. I was kinda cringe overall ngl. But also I was mainly into black metal, melo-death, folk metal and some symphonic metal. But then I have discovered hardcore, post-hardcore, deathcore, metalcore and even some softer genres like post-rock, shoegaze, blackgaze, whatever (never been a genre nerd). I will never forget the hate I've got when I have posted for the first time a BMTH song on Facebook. And not a soft one, but one of the old ones, obviously inspired by Death and At The Gates but combined with influences from Funeral For A Friend and Hopesfall. But I received some quite mean comments and messages telling me that "it is a poser band". In the same period Parkway Drive were set to perform at the biggest metal festival in country and oh boy, metalheads got really upset. Anyone excited about PWD's performance was labelled as a poser into the online space by the "trve metalheads". Also, they were really upset that it was the biggest name on the poster. But I've enjoyed that performance much more than any other headliner (Mayhem, Soulfly, My Dying Bride). But nobody hates metal more than metalheads, and they will take any occasion to shit on the tastes of someone who doesn't listen to the exactly same bands. Heck, once a guy threatened to kill me because I really don't like and care about Motorhead. I ended up removing myself from the "community" for some years to the point that some thought I died. I was really disgusted about how the members of the metal "community" talked shit about each other's taste in music while bragging about how open minded they are (the biggest lie ever).

@@eclat4641 Sorta. Lots of Nu/MetalCore/Death core is not metal. They usually don't have metal riffs, instruments, singing, style and many more things. There are many of those bands that are good and that are metal but they are few and far between.

It's simple. Music is about feeling good and sharing the experience. Listen to the bands you like, attend gigs and concerts, wear what you like, hang out with the people you love. Don't be a tryhard, don't constantly label your self. You don't need anyone's approval. Don't judge others. Show the ropes to those new in the game. Respect the scene and your fellow metalheads.
We're all in this once and life does not have a rewind and replay button.

Most people are not trying to pretend. Most people who are into metal, like metal but it might not be your type of metal.
As i have seen people targeting for liking certain bands and subgenres.
Meanwhile we have people who pretend to not like something because they fear their buddies will call them posers. I think that's being a poser if you have to pretend you're not into something.
Most average person doesn't care about metal and they're not desperate to come into the scene.
I think those who believe there is some huge queue of people lining up to pretend to be into metal, obviously don't get out much. They're the types who have bad hygiene and should worry more about that than posers. Take a shower or bath and stop judging people for liking different bands.

Back in the '80s the word "poser" was also regularly used in a negative way (usually by thrash metal fans aka "thrashers") when talking about glam metal and radio friendly hard rock bands (Bon Jovi, Europe, Poison, Ratt, etc.). At least in Germany.
I remember the word poser being used by skaters who actually could skate as a derogatory term for those who looked the part, had namebrand boards and other hardware, and couldn't skate. Either through putting in no effort to obtain skills to become a real skater or just hung out to be friends with real skaters, in this one would be a poser. It wasn't long after initially hearing the word by skaters that metalheads started using it to describe the fans and bands of hairmetal. I think the skaters can claim to be the first to coin the term poser.

These gatekeeper types are just immature children who don’t touch grass. The only reason we are talking about them is because the internet enables them to have a voice with no cost or consequence for what they say.
On another note; I find it funny when an older metalhead’s first impression of me is my obsession with Babymetal, and even though they haven’t explicitly said anything, I FEEL the elitism oozing off from them in the way they talk to me about the genre. They automatically act like I am unfamiliar with bands like In Flames and Chelsea Grin, but then one day they hear me blasting Aborted or Brand of Sacrifice and I am sharing my history about my interest in Scar Symmetry way back in my college years. Yeah, turns out I’m one of those “older” metalheads it’s just I have been open to the evolution of the genre to this point.

Great video! You hit the nail on the head, I've always thought people who called others "posers" were the true posers themselves. Simply like what you like and be open to others' tastes, that's just what allows for the best discussion. Metal is a subversive art and if a band pisses you off so much that kinda makes them even more metal honestly

I wear bright happy colors and yet listen to deathcore, DSBM and I play a baritone 7 string in B flat standard. Maybe I belong, maybe I don't.
They aren't a metal band, but one of the biggest cases of real posers I've come across is street kids wearing Leftover Crack merch. For some reason it's a thing (or it was a few years ago) for street kids to wear LOC patchs as part of their aesthetic. While also making a point of being excessively racist and homophobic. This despite the fact the LOC writes songs specifically about killing racist and homophobes.
One time I had a friend expeess horror that I and our other friend wanted to see LOC live. I had to explain to her that her impression of the band was formed by posers and that those kind of people would get the shit beaten out of them if they showed up at a live show.

Poser is the buzzwordy name for a false person. The classical definition is someone who pretends to like something from a given subculture in order to become accepted by its community, gaining acceptance and validation; but there are more and new ways of posing (neoposing). It may also be a person who gives controversial opinions that challenge a standard in order to appear more knowledgable and authentic. Both of these cover the three things people lie about to agrandize their self image: knowledge, experience, originality. Truth is they all fall in the same psychological phenomena. I'm actually working on a study with the intent of exploring them, since posing is pretty studied by sociology. The video by sashatainment, The TikTok Alt Era & Poser Discourse, sums it up well.

In the UK there's nothing cool about liking metal. You won’t get shouted at or accused of being a satanist but you will be laughed at... allot. Everyone you know will make fun of you or they will accuse you of being weird.

Rule 1 dont listen to a metal song only one time and say that your a metal head. Number 2 dont try to look like a metal head if dont know any songs by the band on your tshirt number 3 KORN IS NOT METAL LIMP BIKIT IS NOT METAL. And dont listen to metal just to listen to it. Being a metal head is a life style not a phase. Being a metal head is suppost to be like a family having other real metal heads around. Being a metal head is meant to show respect to work done by those whose worked on there music.
I listen to a few Metal bands, but the idea of being called a metalhead makes me want to vomit. I listen to Punk & Hardcore but i don’t attach myself to that as my identity, it’s just something that i as a regular human being have a heavy interest in. I don’t call myself a Punk, i don’t call myself a Hardcore kid, i’m just me, and that’s all i ever want to be.
Besides that, i really have no problem with being called a poser as anyone who tries to enforce the authenticity of someone’s love for a certain type of music has more than likely never felt the warm embrace of someone who finds them mutually attractive.

I'm a former Metal elitist who may be partially responsible for the whole name 3 bands meme, lol. Not kidding, The Metal community I helped create in the late '90s on AOL and MSN had a requirement of naming 3 bands for new people, and if we determine the list was crap we gave them the boot. Seeing that line of thinking carry on now makes me cringe. Metal Elitism is simply just a phase young metal heads will grow out of(with a few exceptions).

Great name for a band, could be any genre.
I like all kinds of music, but I like many bands that perform various kinds of metal. I don't call myself a metalhead though :) I have shirts for bands I don't normally listen to (or if I listen then not much), but in those cases I've actually seen them live despite not listening to them much, like for example Slayer. I saw them once because I have favorite songs and wanted to see them before they quit. Ended up seeing them twice since they came to a festival as well :D Have a whole bunch of shirts for such bands, but as I said, I did seem them live :D In the end, my field of fucks is barren, I don't care if someone thinks I'm a poser :D

Funny thing is this kind of Alism and gatekeeping can also be found in other genres of music. I have found that country fans are just as annoying as metal fans when it comes to gatekeeping.
The members of a community reserve the right of entry and it's up to them to determine the requirements for it. It happens in ALL communities. It's a common argument that forms of gatekeeping such as the one the video is about aren't helpful for the community (and supposedly "killing" metal, which, being honest, as a statement is a poser litmus test) but they dismiss the fact not just anybody can come in, take what they want and walk around not giving a shit. Metal is not for everyone, but by the requirements it sets up, it paradoxically becomes includes everyone, since the prime principle upon which all the music and philosophy the subculture encompasses is being authentic: being yourself, not caring about how other's perceive you and expressing culturally repressed feelings. Metal is the only music that doesn't matter where you are, it's the same. You can ask a guy to play some metal in the US, then go and do the same in Vietnam, and you will still hear metal. Metal is the only community where you can find all gender expressions and political views. There are Discord servers with more trans than cis women and entire regional scenes revolving around political right extremism. Metal is the single worldwide music.
Literally the only thing you have to do to not be a poser is not pretend to like the music and appropriate its image. People who call bands “poser” are idiotic.
It's so silly that you can get called a poser for wearing the merch of a popular black metal band. Most underground bm bands either don't have any merch, or only print 50 copies of a shit and never restock it. How else are supposed to express that you listen to black metal if not by wearing the merch of popular bands?

Also, I would add that you are not opposer if you like metal but you also also like other genres of music. It is OK to like metal and like other genres of music. I’m polyJAMorous which means that I don’t have a genre preference I just like what I like, and I actually like a lot of metal, but I also listen to country, jazz, pop, rap, classical, etc. This does not make me a metal poser.

I REALLY got into Metal at the age of 15. I had listened to Metal before, stuff like Twisted Sister, Iron Maiden, Quiet Riot etc etc etc. But Summer of '86, I hung around Metalheads for a good portion of that Summer. They were listening to W.A.S.P., Judas Priest, Venom & other stuff I can't quite recall. When I got back home. I continued my Metal "journey" if you will. I listened to ALL facets of Metal. Motley Crue, Poison, Def Leppard, Metallica, Guns n' Roses, Skid Row, Testament, Slayer, Exodus, Megadeth etc etc etc. But I also continued to listen to other genres as well. To this day(I am now 53) I still LOVE Metal. My musical taste will range from Bryan Adams to Cattle Decapitation. I have heard these terms throughout the years, "poser" & "Metal elitists". It makes me laugh. Elitists especially, because for them it seems the ONLY good Metal. Comes from bands NO ONE has heard of. Anyway, my point here is this. Listen to whatever the F@CK you want. The metal scene is highly performative and image-conscious, and typical metalheads make an effort to outwardly exude traits that they clearly don't have (toughness, nonconformism, independence ...). So it's very amusing for these people to call anybody a poser. Ironically, the term is always thrown around the most by those who it definitely applies to the most (black metal idiots, "true" metallists etc.)

5:16 i agree with this opinion, but also i think in genres like black metal, which is about more than music, i think listening to the music isnt enough and the people should be called black metal enjoyers or something like that(they are still metalheads)
other than that i dont see a reason going up to a person calling them poser for liking a band
(i might call people who listen to kpop posers but thats not about the definition of poser)
also i dont think metalheads hate metal more than others, its only about if others know metal more, they would probably have more both good and bad opinions about it

I don't have any band shirts (they are hard to come by in my country and if you do find them they are uber expensive). I get looks from other people when I listen to metal in my car..... I have a few recommendations for some metal bands that not meany people know of. They are Russian bands but it's ok if you don't understand the language because the music itself is still awesome. The bands are Kipelov, Aria, Neverlove, and Kino
The poser label is more of a punk thing. People adopting the look, or pretending to be into the music to either fit in to a social circle or look fashionable. To this day I know people in their 50's that still accuse each other of being posers. The movie "SLC Punk" depicts it pretty well for someone who didn't grow up around it.
As for metal, I don't hear that term thrown around a whole lot aside from comments about teenage girls wearing Zeppelin and Metallica shirts. Usually what I see is the chaos around radio stations when the format changes from hard rock and heavy metal, to butt rock and pop rock. It is probably best summarized by "matters and disputes of taste" and definitions of genre and sub-genre.
Now elitism, yeah that's deeply ingrained. Also, After the Burial is garbage... fite me.
I guess as long as you like bands…

The easiest way to avoid being a poser is to listen to what ever you like regardless of what other think of that band. If you don't listen to a band, even though you like their music, because other metalheads would consider you a poser, then you're a poser. Not giving a fuck what others think is the most metal thing their is. Worrying what others think of you is the most unmetal thing there is. If you like Baby metal and you like wearing their shirts regardless of some metalheads hating Baby metal, then that's pretty metal. Not wearing a baby metal shirt because you're worried what other metalheads will think is being a poser. Be who you are, like what you like, and don't give a fuck...that's metal. I listen to Iron Maiden, Taake, Marduk, Dio, Napalm Death, Carcass, Exhumed, Judas Priest, Scorpions, Rainbow, Brutal Truth, Emperor, Enslaved, Sodom, Kreator, Slayer, Possessed, Agnostic Front, Dead Kennedys, Sick of It All, Metal Church, Raven, Grim Reaper, Benediction, Bolt Thrower, Death...I could go on. But I also listen to Ghost, I love watching Baby Metal videos, and I like Metallica and Slipknot too, and I don't give a fuck if anyone doesn't like that.

Okay DragonForce is Invincible cheese ball power metal and Sabaton is almost melodic metal as it gets in my book. They are just about the only ones right now in the public eye doing traditional heavy metal

Calling someone "poser" is so old as metal is. I was called a poser 4 decades to go. Metal gatekeeper called decades ago some bands poser bands. Was there glimpse of synthesizer that was not metal. If you listen to that, you are poser. So, I disagree it is not a online thing. Because in the early days there was no internet. Now it is only easier to call someone a poser. XD. But I agree these hard core poser caller are poser themselves. Of course you are poser because you listen to an idol band which is poser by definition :P
