  • I went to Graspop Metal Meeting again this year and... it wasn't like the times before. Lots of rain, mud & more. But also some very cool shows!
Here are some impressions from the campsite, festival ground, concert clips and anything else I found mildly interesting. Oh, and my final thoughts and review on this year's GMM.
Did you go? How did you cope with the mud? Let me know how you liked it and if you will go there next year.

    Very honest video!
One question: How did you find camping space and allocation? I saw another video from grasspop and the stewards literally held a tape walked it forward a few meters and then everyone scrambled for a space. The tents were literally inches a part. I would absolutely hate that, so I'm hoping this isn't always the case?

We arrived on Thursday morning so we had to find some spot that was left over. A couple of years ago I was there early enough to also see this approach. The camping space is quite limited at Graspop, meaning that you have to be mindful of how much space you occupy. We had a lot of space this year, but only because we were next to that pond and you couldn't put a tent there anymore. If you like to have lots of space and build a big camp with your friends, then the Boneyard campsite is not really the right place. It sucks, but I can also understand that they need to fit everyone in there.

While I was really annoyed at times, the music was too good not to enjoy it!

UA-cam decided I needed to watch your video, and watch it I did.
Pretty sure I saw myself on the Crosses concert.
Couldn’t agree more with your points on the festival, the organization really lacked on the communication side of things. I always drive and use the parking, the parking they provided this year was way to far away, the shuttles took ages, I probably spent 2 hours going to the festival and back everyday, which made things even more tiring.
But overall, it was supper fun and the line up was again very good! I’ll definitely go again next year

I tried hard not to film people too much but that's nearly impossible at a festival :D
Glad to hear you still had a good time. I was very happy we found a place to park in walking distance because I feared there wouldn't be enough shuttles for all the people (without having to wait for a long time).
I hope they learn from this and are better prepared for similar situations in the future. The tickets aren't cheap, so I think that's not too much to ask!

@@itzanowski Nahhh, it is all fine, I don't mind it at all! (the possible filming part)
Yeah, I hope they learn too, and decide to take action way faster, like adding the wooden chips earlier. And that they improve the communication like you said, cuz they told people what not to do, while giving no directions on what to do until veeery late, and also no replying to anyone's questions.
Let's pray to all gods that Wacken this year will be dry, don't want to get covered in mud for days again!

Not quite sure how you expect the organisers to respond to a rapid weather change. It was forecasted to rain about 4mm on friday (which wouldn't have changed anything), which then in an hour changed to 22mm (what made it a mudfest) when it already started raining.
Communication was also timely and quite clear imo. They told people way in advance what the parking situation would be, and when tents got flooded, it was announced pretty much everywhere in apps media and on the screens.

Of course they cannot control the rain, but the communication about parking wasn't that good in my opinion. And that mostly comes down to trying to communicate well. We were lucky, but I also felt a bit like they didn't really care because they didn't interact online and from what I've heard there weren't a lot of shuttles and waiting times were high. They could have provided a list of parking spots in other nearby towns that have trains to Mol, just as an example. Of course most people can google that, but it would have shown a little bit more care.
Also, did you see the mud in front of the water stations and toilets on the campsite? The organisers could have absolutely brought in some more wood chips if they wanted to. Having some supplies available or finding out where to get them on short notice can absolutely be planned in advance.
