Hi there! It looks like you've been growing those for at least a few years if not more, just judging by the thickness. Those argutas should be flowering by yesr #3. I noticed you're growing a bunch of stems instead of growing 1. It's better to grow one to reach the wire, then cut and work on extending both arms along the wire. Give each arm about 5-10 ft. On both sides. Make sure you trim them if they get longer, as you'll get side shoots going left/right which you need to train onto your additional galvanized wires. If you were to have grown on a T-bar like that, you'll get plenty of fruit at that stage. Also regarding the black tarp... You're heating up the ground below as the sunshine warms up that soil beneath it. While it's a good weed supresser, you'll always have frost issues in early spring because you're pulling forward that growth (i.e. heat) artificially. Lastly, do you have any argutas growing in an planters? The reason I ask is because I don't want to plant my males in the ground to not waste valuable space, but woulf rather have them in planters I can move to the vineyard while blooming. But I don't know if anyone has successfully grown in say 5-6 gallon planters.
Hi Hyemp3king, Yes they are on their third year and some are starting to flower. The reason I'm growing them like that, with multiple trunks, is to have more reserve of older wood on the vine and also as a replacement just incase of damage or frost. The end goal is two to four trunks per vine, and yes I do need to modify my trellising a bit. The plan is to do that for the next season. Unfortunately I don't have any vines growing in pots, but it sounds like a good idea. I do know a few people that grow grapes in 6 gal containers and do well.
Nice one John.
