Braille Formats Challenge
Braille Formats Challenge
June 3 - August 23, 2024
12 week challenge to read 13 pages a day in Braille Formats, 2016.
By the end of the summer, you will have read the 672 page codebook!
The reason for this challenge is to get familiar with Braille Formats, 2016 and not to master it in 12 weeks.
It can be intimidating to read the codebook since it is a hefty tome.
But don't fret! Let's read it together.
1. Watch this Getting Started Video for the Braille Formats Challenge.
2. Then save a copy of the Summer Reading Schedule. You can highlight the days as you read the pages or you can print it and color it by hand. bit.ly/FormatsChallenge
3. Share this challenge with your transcribing friends! Here is the link that they need: bit.ly/FormatsChallenge
4. Check back in every Monday on our Facebook page, groups/uebstudygroup for the weekly reading schedule

When was it made perkins brailler? I wish to respond ❤
Hi! Can you explain further what makes the braille nicely done on this card design?
Do they all require you to write the braille flipped?
Ohhh. I’m very impressed that you inferred that. You are absolutely correct. To write braille using a slate, you wrote right to left and the mirror image of the braille sign. Check out my Slate and Stylus playlist for a video tutorial.
Hi @Elizabeth! You’ve inspired me to join you in learning. Just got my copy of Mangold. Any chance you can share your brf file of the worksheets? That would be great to have for future student needs
Hi Kris! How exciting that you’re learning braille by touch as well! I wish I could share the brf file, but the curriculum is copywrited and I doubt Exceptional Teachings would be happy if I gave it out for free. It’s time consuming typing it up, but it would be a great resource if you brailled your own.
Whwt did u put into your hands? Ty❤ Fab video i needed it ❤
I put lotion on my hands to make them slide easier across the braille.
@@brailleadventures ohh thanks!!! I'll try
So cool!
I’m having a blast! I’ve wanted to learn braille by touch since I was a kid. I was a bookworm and wanted to read past lights out.
Keep up the hard work 💪💯
Thank you. It’s been a good journey. I’m surprised that I’m making progress already and I’m only on lesson 2!
Can you link where you got this book and book mark please. ❤
They are both from Exceptional Teaching.
@@brailleadventures thank you 🙏
I could not find that book on tracking that you show.
That's awesome. After an retinal detachment I'm trying to improve my braille finger reading. So in the future, if I lose my sight, at least I can keep reading books and accessing the Internet. Best regards and thanks for the tips.
I’m glad you found the video helpful. You mentioned that you’re learning braille now. Are you taking a course or teaching yourself?
@@brailleadventures I'm trying to learn by myself. It's really hard to read braille by touch. Thanks for making these videos. They are really fun and useful.
Really enjoyed this video. Thanks for posting!
Glad you enjoyed it! This was one of my favorite videos to make. I find it fascinating that there are new discoveries in braille, even 200 years later.
Thank you for sharing!
You’re welcome
Thanku Mam 😊
Hey Elizabeth, I definitely want to be a part of this challenge. I’m currently on vacation and don’t have access to materials other than my phone. I will do me best to keep up until I return June 7. Thank you for doing this!
Hi Tanna! Enjoy your vacation! If you like, when you get back start on whatever week we are on. Then when the challenge ends on Aug. 23, you could read the weeks that you missed. That way you don’t have to stress out about playing catchup. I’m so excited that you’re doing the challenge with me!
Great idea! Thanks for doing this! 13 pages is very doable and should improve my last minute scrolling for reminders 😂
Glad it is helpful! I’ve been meaning to read BF front to back. I’m excited to be doing this challenge with you!
hello, i got the pdf file ready , i will try and follow along as much i can .. thanks for doing this , greets mak from alaska :)
Awesome!!!!
Who is going to do the summer reading challenge with me?
I also love perkins brailler very much!
may son is 🥺 plz help video send From india ❤ brail mi videos plz reply me Thank you for your helping video ❤
❤
For some reason I prefer typing in Braille rather than print. But I think that is because I have really short pinkies and I only need my three longer fingers. It takes less time and is easier.
How will the blund ppl SEE THE ANGLES THAT THEY ARE MEASURING
Most people who are blind have some vision. They could also measure a 3D object- it won’t necessarily be a line drawn on a page. It could be a raised line or 3D object.
Is there a link somewhere to where I can buy these? I would love to buy a set.

@@brailleadventures thank you so much!
@@pupsterpuppy You're welcome.
Who else has these braille sticky notes? How have you been using them?
god almighty shave those fuckin arms
How does printing this work? I imagine a special printer would be needed...
You can print from Word to an ink or laser jet printer to get flat, black dots. If you wanted raised dots, you’d need access to an embosser, which is a braille printer.
@@brailleadventures thank you!
As a future TVI working on her Braille Transcription Certification, THANK YOU!!!
You’re a TVI and a braillist! That is a rare combo. It is great to meet you! Good luck with your studies. You got this.
Dear Sofia. You Rock. I am excited that you are learning braille.
Wonderful!
Highlights from the @ctebvi conference: 1. Colorful braille stickers from ExceptionalTeaching.com 2. “Guidelines and games for effective braille reading” by Bjorg and Olson. Available in paperback and EPUB from APH.org. Great book for how to teach braille! 3. I got to take several workshops by Dr. Braille, aka Randy Davis from Aloha Braille. Thank you for the braille tshirt! 4. Exploring the exhibit hall and learning about new braille tech! 5. “The big book of puzzles: 50 Searches, Anagrams, And Ladders To Help You Master Braille” from NBP.org for $20. 6. The T3 by TouchGraphics.com blends thermoformed tactile graphics and a tablet to create a multi sensory experience. Check out their website for a video demo! 7. Taptilo has a blue and white jumbo braille display and braille writing blocks. It is an interactive game that teaches braille literacy! 8. I got to attend a workshop on how contract transcribers can find work. The all-star panel consisted of Peggy Schuetz from Transcribing Mariners, Randy Davis from Aloha Braille and Company, and Amber Pearcy from National Braille Press. 9. My Etsy store is opening soon and it will have my first product that I shared a sneak peek at last year’s conference. It’s a sweatshirt with SimBraille that’s says, “I have no idea what this says.” 10. I got to meet Noye from @BraillionOfficial. We are Instagram friends and it was great getting to meet a fellow TVI and braille fanatic. I met so many interesting people! I’m feeling very inspired. I hope you can join me at the next conference! Video description: 10 photos of the above highlights.
Hi braille adventures! I have been following you for a while. I’ve been on my own Braille adventure in a way. I was wondering if I could ask if you have a business email for a business inquiry? I’m not a scam, just a UA-cam viewer based in Honolulu. Thanks!
Hi! I would love to chat. My email address is listed on the About page. I don't want to write it here, because bots might scan this comment and send me a bunch of spam. I'll be on the lookout for your email.
Hello! I couldn’t find the email on about on UA-cam so I messaged on ig. Thank you!
Hii! Im a kid and my grandma who i never got to meet was fully blind. My mum found this and i wanted to learn it, i first started about 4 years ago now then forgot about it, now im relearning!
That is a lovely story! Thanks for sharing. Have fun studying!
😢
Does it have screen reading for desktop apps, outside of chrome though? Can't find any info
It also works on Safari. I haven’t tested it on the other browsers.
Sighted here, I'm learning mostly as a hobby and for a friend, ive seen a couple online, but this helps a lot in knowing when it comes to ordering. I tried to do my own punch letters last night, but the spacing was off haha!
That’s awesome that you’re learning braille to encourage your friend! Who knows where your new braille skills will take you? I’ve met so many wonderful people thanks to braille.
Hi i am fraz from Pakistan, i am Braille teacher, how can i get UEB online certificate ??
After you complete the course, they offer the option to purchase the certificate.
a friend of mine makes a nice living making braille versions of education materials for institutions
There is a shortage of transcribers, so there is always work to be done. That’s great to hear that your friend can make a living doing what they love.
❤
44 years since i heard those sounds... can remember clearly how the machine felt to use. Thanks.
❤ love it. Thank you!
Good I do this activity in 2003 during my M.Ed
Very cool! Did you use Brailon? If so, what did you use to color it?
I have 3 of his books and I’m coloring his drawings in them. I use colored pencils. Sorry if it devalues them. I’m also a writer and poet. I write children’s stories.
I’m blind, and since there doesn’t seem to be any description, perhaps you could let us know what it is.?
The 3D printer is making 1 inch circles with a braille letter on each one. I will photograph the end result and share it along with a description.
LibRary or libary?
So i can only type braille only in that app? is there any other way say i want to type braille in discord? Not that i expect a blind person to read it lol. I wonder what would talkback say?
I haven’t used discord. Can you install a font on discord? If so, you could type in braille using a braille font. My guess is that a screen reader would read the dot numbers.
@@brailleadventuresalr thanks for the reply 🙏
Caps for my Mexican candy
lol That would be fun to have a 3D printer for food! This one prints plastic and metal, which is still pretty cool.
Good idea!!!
Thanks!
