  • How to write in uncontracted and contracted braille in Microsoft Word.
You can do this in any word processing program as long as you can upload your own braille font.

    How does printing this work?
I imagine a special printer would be needed...

You can print from Word to an ink or laser jet printer to get flat, black dots. If you wanted raised dots, you’d need access to an embosser, which is a braille printer.

Wait a minute! Are you telling me in 2023, Microsoft Word doesn't have a way to automatically convert straight from a "regular" font to the final edition of Braille? Wow, talk about not doing the easy stuff to make the world more accessible. I no longer have the skills or tools, but in the 1980s I could have written a Fortran, Pascal or Basic program that used a bunch of if-then statements that would convert "The child sat in the chair" to ",!* sat9 ! *air4" without too much effort. It would take a while to program all the rules because there are quite a few rules, but from a technical stand point it would be trivial. There is absolutely no reason for this feature not exist as a plugin.

There are braille add-in for Microsoft Word. From Duxbury Systems there is the Swift add-in, that appears in Word as an additional tab called "braille" across the top of the screen. And there is the Tiger Designer tab called "tiger". There might be more.

Can we write in grade 2?

Yes. Look up an ASCII braille reference chart or experiment by pushing all of the keys on the keyboard to see which braille signs they have been assigned too. The # on a qwerty keyboard is assigned to the numeric indicator, which is dots 3456.
