  • Seven easy steps for boxing up your Perkins Brailler. In this video, I will also share what supplies you'll need and where to get them.
    Boxing it up:
    1. Push the paper release away from you.
    2. Move the carriage lever all the way to the right and wrap rubber bands around it and the right paper feed knob to hold the carriage lever in place.
    3. Place the Perkins inside of a large trash bag.
    4. Put Perkins in the box with either foam inserts (Perkins, $10) or wrap with a towel, bubble wrap, or newspaper.
If you use something other than the foam inserts, be sure to pad the paper feed knobs with at least two inches of padding to cushion the paper feed knobs.
    5. Put the Perkins in a sturdy cardboard box that’s 17”x11”x8”, (UPS or Perkins, $7)
    6. Include a note describing what is wrong with the machine, your contact information, and your brailler’s serial number (located directly below the spacebar).
    7. Label the box (see below for more information).
DON’T use packing peanuts! They will get stuck in the machine.
DON’T mail the dust cover, carrying case, or accessories.
Write on inside flap of box (to remind yourself):
“Save! Box for my Perkins Brailler!”
Reminders on how to box it up (see above steps). It could be several years before you mail it in next.
Write the date last serviced and what was fixed. (This is also good to track on your computer or in a notebook.)
    Your service technician’s contact info.
Your name and brailler’s serial number (located directly below the spacebar).
    Address the box:
Braillers qualify for free shipping with USPS Free Matter for the Blind.
Either print, rubber stamp, or hand write, “Free Matter for the Blind or Handicapped” in the top right corner of the package.
Also write on the box, “Braille writer returned for repairs”.
At the Post Office, request a free tracking number and pay for insurance if you would like.
BEFORE mailing your Perkins for servicing, confirm that the service technician their turnaround time.
It's a good idea to get everything you need ahead of time, so why not get the shipping supplies you need and address the box now?
If you have an APH Light Touch Perkins Brailler, you can use quota funds to get the machine serviced. Reach out to your EOT (Ex Officio Trustee) to learn about the process for submitting the repair request.
