Mountain Goats
Canada
Приєднався 18 січ 2012
Mountain goats are the super athletes of the ungulate world. They live high on rock cliffs safe from all predators except man. Here's the real story about this beautiful and talented animal presented by members of the British Columbia Mountain Goat Society who live in the centre of the world's population of mountain goats in central British Columbia Canada.
Just Kidding Around 2
A day in the life of a 6-day old mountain goat kid is not easy. You can see where the tenacity and toughness of all mountain goats comes from. Our kid loves a challenge. A rock cliff is simply something to climb.

Here are more of our favourite video clips. Mountain goats are so curious about our cameras. Their first move is to smell the camera. Watch for the billy with the injured foot. The wolf looks as if he suffered an injury to his leg or hip in the past.

Here are some of our favourite video clips. Mountain goats live in a beautiful but hostile place. A pleasant summer day can turn into fierce winds. Snow can bury the forage goats depend on. Watch for the grizzly that enjoyed wrecking our camera.
Mountain Goats All Night Long

What do mountain goats do in the dark? Do they really keep their eyes open all night? A nanny shows us how it all works. Mountain goats have excellent night vision and often feed or travel at night on steep cliffs. But night is the best time to rest, even if mountain goats have to keep a watch for predators.

We test camera settings for the new Smithers Method, a way to add high-resolution photos along with flight crew comments to helicopter surveys of mountain goats in north central British Columbia, Canada. We are using a GFX 100s medium format camera with a 45 mm lens that combines wide field of view with high resolution. Each photo is 102 mb. In an actual survey, the entire flight would be recor...
McKendrick Report 11 Change of Behaviour

Snowfall this winter is half of normal. The mountain goat herd has adapted by expanding their winter range and spending more time in the trees. That makes the goats less visible. As a result, we are unable to count the members of the herd. But the lack of snow may make life easier for the mountain goat herd.
Mountain Goats - Fire on the Trail

Can mountain goats survive a forest fire? Our remote camera shows that goats can cross an active fire. In this case, the destination is a mineral lick and the mountain goats will suffer if they don't get to the lick. Two-week old kids follow their mothers, smoke and ash or not.

Good news. Two new mountain goat kids are born on McKendrick Mountain in June of 2023. Each nanny must introduce her new kid to the rest of the herd. It's an exciting time when a new kid is accepted as a member of the herd. The voluntary recreation closure is succeeding. By stepping back, we allow the mountain goats to slowly increase their population.

The herd recovered from their escape from backcountry skiers. Now they battle deep snow to survive until warm spring weather arrives. We report on the population of the herd. Two new kids were born last June but one goat has disappeared this winter. Mountain goats face many hazards on steep cliffs at the edge of alpine.

We documented a disturbance by skiers that forced the mountain goat herd into high-risk avalanche terrain. It's exhausting just watching the goats belly deep in soft snow and struggling to escape from the skiers.

The mountain goat herd on McKendrick Mountain finally returns to the top. Recreationists have stayed off the mountain and allowed the herd space and time to recover. The voluntary closure is working.

Female mountain goats (nannies) feud and fuss to advance their rank and maybe become a leader of the herd. Meanwhile the kids and males (billies) stand back and watch the show of aggression. It's all part of living on the high-risk cliffs of British Columbia.
Mountain Goats - Weather on the Mountain

The weather in the open alpine can be extreme. From super bright sun in summer, hot temperatures and insect bits to extreme cold and strong winds in winter. Add in steep cliffs, ice and avalanches. Mountain goats survive it all. Watch the young goats playing in a snow storm.

The goat says peekaboo!
Amazing footage!!! 🙌🏻
Wow, 🤯 beautiful
Giest (1964) described mtn goat rut pits wherein billies sit down and paw with front hooves, showering themselves with dirt. He thought they may urinate in the pit, this imbuing themselves with their own scent when they take a dirt shower. Other than his, I haven't found any documentation of these pits. Have you observed this behavior and/or identified the pits? Wonderful videos you have here. Many thanks.
You are correct. The billies in rut often have dirt show on their belly. Especially the more mature billies.
@@oreamnos2012 thank you!
That is excellent footage. You got some really interesting behaviors. Thanks so much for sharing.
Hopefully there will be lots of kids this year on the mountain
Love watching these, thank you!
very interesting!
This is exactly the same herd composition and interaction I watched during my goat research so many years ago in coastal BC! So cool to see the behaviours between individuals. Thanks for sharing this. Mountain goats are amazing animals.
When I played the mountain goat calling to others., 3:goats of mine responded back. So 💞
Ați văzut? Ții aproape(ascultare) de mama, trăiești!
Nice.
Nice to see new kids on the mountain hopefully they'll be lots more 🤞
Still think the mountains of newfoundland and labrador should have mountain goat's.
Why do people have to put music in nature videos and ruin everything
Scientific names of all twenty-two extant ovibovine species: 1) Arabitragus jayakari - Arabian Tahr 2) Nilgiritragus hylocrius - Nilgiri Tahr 3) Hemitragus jemlahicus - Himalayan Tahr 4) Rupicapra asiatica - Asiatic Chamois 5) Rupicapra ornata - Italian Chamois 6) Rupicapra rupicapra - Alpine Chamois 7) Rupicapra pyrenaica - Western Chamois 8) Capricornis bangladeshiensis - Bangladeshi Serow 9) Capricornis rubidus - Red Serow 10) Capricornis maritimus - Indochinese Serow 11) Capricornis sumatraensis - Sumatran Serow 12) Capricornis thar - Himalayan Serow 13) Capricornis milneedwardsii - Chinese Serow 14) Capricornis swinhoei - Formosan Serow 15) Capricornis crispus - Japanese Serow 16) Naemorhedus baileyi - Red Goral 17) Naemorhedus goral - Himalayan Goral 18) Naemorhedus griseus - Chinese Goral 19) Naemorhedus caudatus - Long-Tailed Goral 20) Oreamnos americanus - Mountain Goat 21) Budorcas taxicolor - Takin 22) Ovibos moschatus - Muskox
A very nice list indeed. Our mountain goats are the oreamnos americanus toward the bottom of the list. The serow and goral are the closest relative to our goats and they all reside in eastern asia.
That is correct, the gorals, mountain goat, and serows are ovibovines that are under the tribe Naemorhedini, which also contains the chamoises, which officially divides ovibovines (subfamily Ovibovinae) into three tribes: Hemitragini (Tahrs), Naemorhedini (Gorals, Mountain Goat, Serows, and Chamoises), and Ovibovini (Muskox and Takin), Naemorhedini and Ovibovini are most closely related to each other, while the tahrs (tribe Hemitragini) are basal to both, within the Naemorhedini tribe, the gorals are the closest living relatives of the mountain goat and the serows are the second closest, leaving the chamoises the most basal of the Naemorhedini tribe.
So cool - thank you for getting this winter footage!
Love it! Keep'em comin' Love from Texas!
*Promosm* 💖
like the typical heavy hitter back country mountain skiing steep line rippin look at me dude/dudette narcissist is even remotely knowledgeable or concerned about how their activity is affecting a mountain goats life sheesh
Thank you for posting this video. I feel so sorry for this tiny herd of mountain goats, just trying to make it through the winter. Their survival is so tenuous to begin with in such harsh terrain. With more people venturing into the outdoors and many are going deeper into the back country, are we so clueless of the problems we cause for the creatures that live and belong there? Skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, etc. seem like harmless activities, but just the presence of humans is enough to disturb and cause hardship to the things that are struggling to survive. I'm curious how can they even "close" a mountain or area and if people would respect that if it's just signage? Regrets don't help or solve the problem.
awesome
Very informative video, thank you for sharing :)
Ca n u imagine if our kid got that close to a cliff ledge !
This video is now more relevant than ever before...impressive
Way of the Hunter player?
Such Beautiful animals. Hope they stay safe & have a healthy life.
i myself am a mountain goat
Awesome videos, excellent footage 🐐👍🏞
Would love to see mountain goat's in the long range mountains of Newfoundland and Labrador 🐐👍
This channel is the G.O.A.T.! Thank you for the awesome productions
Goats are amazing creatures arent they?
They are more related to cows and gazelles than goats
That's not true. The domestic goat and the mountain goat are both in the Caprinae tribe.
Oreamnos americanus. Is not related to the common goat
Despite, its name, the Mountain Goat (Oreamnos americanus) is not a goat, nor is it closely related to them, the mountain goat is the only extant species of the genus Oreamnos, its closest living relatives are the chamoises (genus Rupicapra), these genera are classified within the subtribe Rupicaprina, which belongs to the tribe Naemorhedini, which also now belongs to the subfamily Ovibovinae, Ovibovinae is a subfamily of bovids that are mostly native to temperate or cold-climate habitats, there are three majors tribes within Ovibovinae, Hemitragini (Tahrs), Naemorhedini (Gorals, Serows, Chamoises, and Mountain Goat), and Ovibovini (Muskox and Takin), Ovibovinae is most closely related to the subfamilies Hippotraginae (Grazing Antelope) and Alcelaphinae (Hartebeest, Wildebeests, Hirola, and Tsessebees).
Great show. 0:50 Fecal pellets ? From what?
The goats leave a thick layer of fecal pellets from years spent on the ledge.
Utterly amazing
Awesome videos, very well done. Wish the newfoundland & Labrador wildlife department would introduce mountain goats here ,lots of great habitat and feed around for thousands of goat's!🐐
Wonder what Shane Mahoney's opinion would be about that?🤔
So cute
Gorgeous footage - thank you for sharing!
I'm truly fascinated with the way they lived on a mountain it's dreadful to see them on the steep sloops unmindful of dangers to their lives.
These are some cool ass goats.
Very nature nice😊💝
this should have more views!! its wonderful
My favorite animals.
I am the 100 likers love the video!
Beautiful photography.
I like the video near the end of the “nanny” calling. Then if you pause at 1:55 you can see it’s giant ball sack. Is this a transgender goat?
Dont shut where you are going to eat unless your a goat.
Here after George talks about mountain goats licking rocks.
OMG SAME LOL
Since most most of the time women goats go up the mountain and lick salt, does that mean they are more expert at climbing than the male?
Both males and females are equally expert at climbing.
How come their coat gets removed? O.o it sheds automatically by season?
Yes, by August all the old winter coats are molted and the new winter coats start to grow
