American avocets! San Francisco Bay bird photography
Join me as I film and photograph shorebirds along the San Francisco Bay on a recent warm, calm morning. While I capture footage of terns, snowy egrets, and a mischievous black-necked stilt, my primary focus is on the strikingly beautiful American avocets.

I recently had some luck finding Virginia rails. The problem is they seem to only come out into the open after the sun is down... Whimbrels! Birding on the California coast
Переглядів 772Рік тому
I spent a morning with the whimbrels on the coast of Northern California. These shorebirds have quite a bit of personality, and you never really know what will happen next. From a photographer's perspective, I like how they are challenging enough to where usually you can’t just walk right into telephoto distance and get a shot, but they aren’t so difficult that it would take serious effort to e...
What a gem! Bird photography on the California coast
Переглядів 3,5 тис.Рік тому
This year, I moved to the coast of Northern California! While I’m still working on achieving my goal of spotting a whale from inside my home, I do, however, have direct access to some of the world’s most beautiful landscapes and the incredible wildlife that inhabits them via the Pacific Coast Highway. I took a short drive down to Pescadero in search of coastal birds to do some good ‘ol wildlife...

Thanks for this review. I about the software a while ago but haven’t spent any time using it due to work. That is changing now, so your video is very timely for me even if it is a couple of years old now.
Very helpful. Was wondering what to do with the grooveless foot. Now I know.
I completely agree with you 💯 %
Who who who who
I thought is a good camera. Are camcorders better for filming, the ones under 800 euros-dolars and not so big ?
Your patience paid off. Love those little moments…stretching, scratching that itch, etc. Beautiful captures Ryan.
nice
Great footage, that Nikon IBIS serving you well there, and a steady hand I am sure :)
I love A7s, when converted to full spectrum it turns into true night vision device. But long lens will be needed for greater zoom that's why I'm waiting for SPAD or x1000 more sensitive graphene CMOS sensor camera's to shrink camera size, weight and cost.
Honey wake up, new Ryan Mense video just dropped! Actually saw and photographed my first Virginia Rail a couple of weeks ago. A single one about 20ft away foraging, not giving a shit about me at all.
That’s some good luck right there!
Nice outing! I can wait to head south this winter and see actual double digit number of species vs our measly Alaska winters.
To be fair you get everything good in the summer AND in breeding plumage 😄
glad you are still posting content Ryan. We have them in the UK, they're just called Water Rail here, but are super skittish and highly skulking as well, always a pleasure to see them!
Different species but sounds like just as fun behavior 😆
I found this video to be very helpful. Not sure if someone already asked this or not, but with the ef 100-400, do you find 400 to be long enough or do you sometimes wish you had that extra 100mm reach in the RF 100-500? I'm asking because I am considering one of the two lenses. I have the VND adapter, but I also have front element VND that would fit the RF. Yes there is a price difference to consider as well. I'm curious to know if you find the 400mm length to be enough for the majority of filming, or if the increased length of the 500mm is worth the cost difference?
Can you give any tips on how to make money with wildlife footage?
What do you think gets better results? Upscaling HD 240fps or Slowing down 4k120, say?
I can see it go both ways depending on the video input. If there’s fast movement, it can sometimes be difficult to get good results slowing down video, since it needs to create frames between existing frames, and the fast movement can be confusing. On the other hand, unless shooting with a higher end cinema camera, 240fps modes have a big dip in image quality. So you’re starting from something that’s lower quality and then upscaling it to 4k. But at least you’ll have all the frames you need in the original.
Awesome. Could you advice where will it be possible to see hummingbirds in large number in Pt Reyes?
Thanks. Not sure on that one. Haven’t been there in a couple of years and don’t remember seeing them anywhere in large numbers.
love how they collapse into each other and call it a battle
Thank you for this video.
Can you recommend ? 24mm vs 16mm
Nice review as always mate. One question though, how do you balance non-internal zoom lens on a fluid head when shooting out? Thanks.
Does the EOS R3 enable touch-auto focus (on it's flip -out LCD screen) even if you have an external monitor connected to the unit during video recording? If my memory is correct, you could do this with the Canon R. Thanks!
Beautiful big fat sausages ❤
Remaining time: "Never" for 8k 240fps with an old video card.
Also this pre-roll takes audio, while FX6 only does it in S&Q without audio. Sony has a master class explaining this. To me using the A7SIII as my daily shooter while still have the luxury of pre-roll when paired with Ninja for wildlife is a game changer.
I’d have the Wimberley lens foot as once it’s attached I would never be taking it off and there is no knob to get in way either.
Nice video. You know that u can record with preroll at shogun? It cashes 2s in 4k and 8 Hd... no quite like trigger fs5 but its something cool that dont let you loose same action before hit record, and you can set it to 120fps an slow in post.
Nice little 20k care package that
Dude, you need to set a button to return your focus point to the center of screen (standard). Then, if your focus lockon gets squirrelly you can return focus point to center.
Were can I find it IAM from Zambia mazabuka
Is there any drawbacks at all to 24fps to 60fps? Or should I shoot 1080/60 and upscale to 4K?

Have you used the QD feature of the new Kirk 'foot'? I've used the push button style QD for years with firearms and have recently started to use it with camera equipment. My SmallRig a6700 cage has a QD socket, which is very convenient, as does the kirk lp-68. I had several lying around, so it was a no-brainer for me. Since they are MILSPEC, the QD is extremely sturdy.
Yeah I use QD now with no issues
E seal!!!!
Great footage! I have the toughest time photographing birds in flight. New subscriber here ✨
I just can't figure out what the Bib looking thing with 16 little grip circle dots is. Anyone know?
Securing a helmet is the intended purpose
got my lens the lens coat ia pain to install
Love this video. Thanks!
Glad it helped
4 years later.... I recently bought the A7R III and I'm so happy with the quality. Affordable camera now for high quality pictures.
Such a great reflection! I am still an FS5M2 user, and you made some great points about the buttons on the display, the control wheel, and the ease of use of off-and-on selection. I have watched a million videos about the FX6, and very few cover those topics.
Also the S&Q options and cache recording you discussed are right on. I completely agree and love the FS5M2 for that very reason.
I also run with an Inferno 100% of the time on my FS5M2, so there is very little reason to upgrade until the following line comes out. I may be jumping back over to Nikon, we shall see.
Great video! That Goldeneye at 2:45 didn't really stick the landing!!😂
Nice footage You don’t seem to be happy with the R3..??
Would you recommend this microphone for better audio quality for filming live music events?
Just buy the legpad

You're using the 100-400 w/ TC, is it the 1.4 or 2.0 and how do you like it? Why are you not shooting with your 200-600?
Never mind I see you switched to Canon.
Very interesting! Greetings from the Pacific Northwest Sending cheers your way from the West Coast. #BeautifulWashington🥂 Declan
Any plans on selling R3 body
Not in the near future
How are you liking the 24mp on the Canon R3? I got the Sony a7R5 with the 200-600mm it gives me 61mp and 26mp in crop mode super happy 😊
I don’t really think about it. Especially since 90% of the time I’m doing video with this camera. I’ve owned the a7R IV and played with the V and my favorite thing about that much resolution is that I can shoot photos in landscape orientation and later decide I want a vertical and still have the 24MP or whatever it is. Glad to hear you’re loving it!
May give this a try on mine once I can actually get out on some birds or something like that
hey can you do a video, comparing this please, 4k 30p to 60p vs 1080p 60p upcale to 4k, which one looks better, pleaseeee i need this big favor, i need to buy a lens wider for my real estate videos but is i can just use 4k 30 or 1080 on my sony a7v with this software will be amazing , again thanks so muchhhhh
