Backroads to Ross – Bypassing Hobart, Tasmania
Tasmania Day 6 - Kermandie to Ross
After breakfast at the Kermandie Hotel, we met Darrel Young at the DS Cafè at Huonville for a chat about his wonderful ‘Ride the Byroads’ project. And that’s what most of our ride was about today - riding part of the Byroads (RtB) gravel route to Ross.
This was a great start to the day because the route totally bypasses Hobart. We rode through to Bushy Park then to Ouse, then more gravel to Arthur Lakes Roadhouse for lunch, and finally Interlaken Rd before a bit of bitumen to Ross.
As soon as we arrived, it was a dash to Bakery31 for a beautiful Scollop Pie and a walk around this amazing heritage town which is full of history. The people here were also very nice - we went for a walk out to the Ross Female Factory which should have been closed, and the lady responsible to lock-up, simply said “look through for a half-hour or so, and I’ll be back later to lock up when you’re done”.

Tumut to Goulburn via Wee Jasper

Wee Jasper Road - in Perfect Condition We woke in Tumut to a beautiful blue-sky-morning but waited until the temperature reached 6º at 9am to begin our back-road ride home. There were lots of road improvements on Wee Jasper Rd and it looks like the Forestry is grading its own brand new routes. It is an easy, enjoyable ride to Wee Jasper, then a nice twisty, sealed ride to Yass. However, after W...

We ticked off three of Tasmania’s best twisty sealed roads - Waratah Road to Savage River (out and back) and Hellyer Gorge and finished with a favourite, Cradle Mountain Road. Lovely vid and thanks for the excellent production. Haven't ridden this but drove south via Wee Jasper a few years ago with the family and my oldies in our 4WDs, on our way down to the Vic High Country. It's beautiful countryside and has excellent roads, as you note. I'm currently riding a Ninja 1000 but don't mind knocking up a few kays on half decent dirt roads. When it gets a bit warmer I might have to look more closely at a ride like this! Cheers from Sydney - Dave

There was one or two I'm not sure if I've ridden on your list but would agree with them all. Order is a subjective thing, although I do agree with what I've known as the Mitta Mitta Rd being no.1. Have a look at roads around Pyalong NW of Broadford as there are some beauties there (I now live in Bendigo). I'm not sure if it should be no.31 but the Walhalla rd is also a good one, although leaf litter and tourist traffic particularly on weekends can be a downer. There are also a couple of other roads around the Grampians that are worth a good explore as well, and as I write, the road to and from Wilsons Prom can be a lot of fun. Thanks for your list.

    • @rideday01
      @rideday01 21 день тому

Thanks for your comment and I'm also agreeing with everything you said. 30 seconds into the video I also list a bunch of roads that won't be mentioned and they included Wilsons Prom, Highlands Rd (near Pyalong), Tyers Rd (Walhalla), though I didn't mention Walhalla Rd nor Thomson Dam Access Rd also near Walhalla which is also great. 👍 Damn Victoria, there's just too many great roads. 😀😀

Hi guys, In following along (or should I say travelling with you) I'm taken straight back to my years of exploring on bikes. Especially reminiscent of when I had my R75/5 BMW. The gorgeous tones of your two awesome bikes instantly take me back to those halcyon days (circa 1962-1976) spent riding from/to Deniliquin, traversing three states mainly, but also some longer adventures involving an attempt in the wet heading for The Alice along the Oodnadatta Track. From Sydney, via Adelaide. Then Sydney -Mt Isa -Alice Springs -Adelaide -Riverina - Bathurst -Sydney. As well as an attempt in the wet heading for The Alice along the Oodnadatta Track, again from Sydney. Thankyou for sharing these great well done videos. Loved showing your video to my wife. Two weeks ago I covered much of the same route from Boorowa to Tumut bikepacking on my fat tyre mountain bike. I too did the length of Copperbella Rd and had to open and close all those gates. Only at the end of the road, I turned right onto Berremangra Road and back up to MacMahon's Reef Road for the run down into Jugiong. Like you, I crossed the Murrumbidgee out of Jugiong and climbed up the hills along Bundarbo Rd, but after the first 8km, I turned off Bundarbo Rd onto Hopewood Road for a fast downhill to the river and a wonderful section following the river flats. Hopewood Road turned into Gobaralong Road. At Gobaralong Bridge I turned onto Darbalara Road and followed this beside the Tumut River through to Brungle and Killimicat and on to Tumut. I took 6 days with 5 nights camping in my little tent. As I said, my wife, who followed my trip as little GPS dots on the map, enjoyed being able to see the scenery and to quality of the roads. Short section of sealed road usually appears near local mayors property....so the myth goes.

😀😀. I guess it helps the land-owners not get covered in dust every time someone drives by.

I love riding around south-eastern NSW and the eastern half of Victoria. Sadly, I can't do it anymore but your videos partly make up for it. Thanks!!!

Last year, a Binalong local told me Galong is pronounced Gaylong.

Thanks. That’s correct. Unfortunately I asked my mother too late. She spent time in that area growing up and is like an encyclopaedia. 😂

@@rideday01 I could see Galong becoming a sort of cult country getaway if that wonderful pub could get some traction and Airbnb’s developed there. Went through there on a couple of rides last year.

Perhaps they need to setup and then advertise, like on bike sites, etc.

Another great video. I haven't had a chance to do this road but will make a point of riding it next time I'm down that way. It would also be good if you could work out a way to include Toni's voice when she is talking to you. It's very frustrating listening to only 50% of the conversation. I'm not a tech-head, but surely it can be done. Not a criticism, just constructive feedback. Safe travels.

Thanks! It can easily be done (you add an audio splitter cable and change a Sena setting), but at this stage, Toni doesn't want to be heard 🤣🤣. Maybe one day she'll change her mind. 👍

That's a shame 🫠 keep working on her it would add another dimension to the video.
